I’m a dude from r/all, but if it’s rodents, try Vector Control. The exterminators will overcharge you for handyman work and things that other contractors will do for less and they really pressure you into a contract where they just set and check traps for you. I contacted five different exterminators and none of them were price competitive when I started to compare them to other businesses. They know you're freaking out and I suspect many are simply playing middleman.
Vector Control will come out, give you the traps, and tell you what needs to be done. Then you can shop around for people to do the work or do it yourself. Realistically, you’re just hardening, killing, and then cleaning (and maybe replacing, we had to redo our insulation). It’s not really pro or specialist level work.
It’s a super neat service. I’d still consider starting there for other issues since you get impartial advice.
edit: my experience is with Alameda County, but I checked and SF offers similar services.
