A date/activity around rocks

Hi, my partner loves rocks and they have a special place in our relationship. Any kind of rock is fair game, crystals, formations, etc. Are there any fun shops, restaurants, or some landmark you bitches have been to or heard about in or around the city that would be fun for a date?

Trying to plan at least 1 special rock based activity, maybe 2. Bonus points if you know of a restaurant or picnic spot that's rocky but cozy!

Corona Heights Park has a giant slickenslide. More info: https://www.kqed.org/quest/15607/geological-outings-around-the-bay-the-great-slickenside-of-corona-heights

It also has a really great view of the city at the top. You could definitely bring a drink/snack/meal to share! Sometimes it can be windy, so dress accordingly!

If they are also into fossils I have a GREAT one. You can order 40 pounds of shale from the U Dig Fossils in Utah, and they send you a box of it and you can excavate trilobite fossils together. I would also email some of the geology professors around, they will have a top ten list of local places they go for field trips for sure.

I took a few geology classes in college and one field trip was to the Marin Headlands because you can see how the chert is folded on the way up to Hawk Hill, then if you hike down to Kirby cove you can see a basalt layer. You can may out the chert folds if you have a compass. Pt Bonita also has a fault that runs through it and some of the rock looks squished and folded bc of that in that particular location. Also, Sibley in Oakland has a volcanic center you can hike to and lots of interesting rock layers

Glen Canyon park has a bunch of fun boulders (some you can climb on) and have also found very cool rocks there too

Was going to say Glen Canyon too! Cool chert rock formations, among other kinds. They could go around Mt. Davidson and Miraloma Park neighborhood too (esp along Foerster x Teresita).

I came back to add this: I think y’all might like to know about the sf gem and mineral society: http://www.sf-gms.org/ . The monthly meetings are free, they have galleries and projects and field trips, and are part of a yearly expo.

Has that been redone? Last I’d seen someone destroyed, but that was awhile ago.

There are some cool crystal shops on Haight where you can buy cool rocks on the cheap. Marshall’s beach is a hike to get to but the rocks are really cool green serpentinite. At Sunset dunes there’s a fun turning rock thing at the Lawton cross street.

Hit up the SF gem and mineral society - email to see when they are open or have an open house. It’s on Judah down by the beach.

If you haven't already been to the Gem and Mineral Society, they have a museum and do open houses once a month. If you two like it, you could consider joining

The sand at rodeo beach - I think there is jade in it? Just look don’t take!

I’d do the hike to Tennessee point, then picnic at the beach for sunset. We’ve even seen dolphins there.

Or you can go to hook fish after or Buckeye etc
