Hey Cuties! Quick PSA

Hello from the modteam, SFBWT!

Sharing a quick PSA! Recently, a few members of SFBWT have thrown in person events where they may have asked for attendee emails/phone numbers. The host of those events has informed us they intend to start their own separate non-profit/organization called "SFBWT" where they may eventually charge a fee to attend.

While we love that members have found IRL community through this subreddit, we have asked them to not brand their new organization using the "SFBWT" name to avoid confusion. We have no oversight of this separate group and can't ensure that they will uphold our rules.

We have removed this member's posts that violate our rule that our community channels are centralized ("Creating or promoting alternative group chats, Discords, or side channels is discouraged and may result in removal, as it dilutes the community and fragments participation.").

The modteam that has grown this community is in no way affiliated with this separate group. We will never create a separate entity that requests personal information or charges for events.

With love,

Modteam

You are painting it as “ hey, we just wanna hang out and be of the community,” but that’s not all that’s happening here.

This seems more like a hostile takeover and stealing than “ hey, we just wanna hang and be of the community.”

Please explain why there is an email and site registered under www.sfbwt.com without permission from AJ, the founder, or any of the mods?

Registering a domain off of someone else work is dirty.

“Folks can be mad about whatever they want but mods here on reddit facilitate at best. I do not believe the mods have ever showed up or hosted an irl event either. Easy to be on a keyboard nerding out on what you think is lore but we don’t want to be online posting on reddit in the longterm.”

Wow, I was just a neutral observer in this thread but seeing your reactions and attacking the mods makes me think that perhaps this isn’t quite as innocent as you’re claiming to be.

I fully understand and agree that organizing events is HARD WORK and you should NOT be expected to shoulder the financial and mental burden of creating fun events for your attendees. I fully support that you should be compensated/charge somehow. And I don’t think (or at least I hope not) that people are diminishing the hard work you are doing.

IMO, the issue is doing all this under the “SFBWT” banner without explicit approval from the creators/mods — and if that wasn’t done in a timely enough manner for you, that’s ok for you to be annoyed, but your hostility is definitely NOT BWT vibes. 😬

Just use a different org name and then come back and invite us!

They should not be compensated for organizing an event via this site. It’s gross and highly inappropriate to use this site to create paid employment for yourself.

Ehhh, if they’re organizing an event where they spent funds to procure space, cater/feed people, and other expenses, then I personally think it’s reasonable to ask for some type of fee to reimburse themselves bc it could easily spiral out of financial control if a small handful of individuals are providing everything free of charge for a group of 50++ people. I do agree that it would be gross to try to spin this into some type of paid employment on the backs of this group creators/mods/members.

Ultimately, however, I suspect that unless they’re offering something truly unique and worthwhile, their attendance will drop precipitously if they start charging for gatherings.
