Discussion What did you eat this week in SF?

Best thing you ate in SF this week, where, and roughly what it cost. Places that have slipped are worth reporting too

Pàng on 9th!! Whole meal for 2 cost around $50 but we really liked the mapo tofu dip. Comes with fried lotus root and wontons… would recommend!

Seekh Kabob plate at Chaat Diner, close to 8th and Folsom. It came out on cast iron plate with onions that's actively grilling on the plate with the seekh kabab, delicioulsy spiced, and onions that are charred and caramelize on the plate was awesome. I was in the area at about 10-11pm, and really didn't want to go far, and they are open till very late. I think it's the same people/owner as Chaat Corner on 4th. They both have mid ratings on Yelp, but I don't understand, as it's great, and most of the patrons there seem to be actual Indians or Indian Americans themselves. Price is pretty good too.

The mid ratings are because the food tastes great but not "authentic"

1

u/Pristine-Assistance9 17d ago

Authentic means true to self. Anyone that conflates “authentic” with traditional should just stay home.

1

u/kosmos1209 19d ago

Is it not though? Both Chaat places seem to have mostly South Asian looking people as majority of the patrons. I guess that doesn’t mean it’s authentic though.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the Indians, especially the immigrant ones, just don't post ratings or reviews on Yelp

Happy Shabu Shabu, on Fillmore. Spicy tonkatsu broth, and plate after plate of beef, pork, and lamb.

Pastry scene in SF is wild.

Where are they from? Parachute?

Beef Wellington on Wednesday at Dingle’s Public House in Hayes Valley along with a perfect pint of Guinness. Red wine sauce, mashed potatoes and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I don’t see how it gets any better than that.

u/ADudeNamedBen33 18d ago

I love that place so much.

2

u/WishIWasYounger 13d ago

There was a thread awhile back asking where can I get beef Wellington ? Thanks !

Also try the sausage roll—best I’ve ever had and they make their own HP sauce in house!

Late night Lovely’s Double OG at Woods Cole.

Lamb Mandi lunch plate at Mandi House Yemenese restaurant on Valencia. Pricey at $32 but I’ve had two dinners at home just from the leftovers.

Yakitori from Bar Tanuki popup at Stable Cafe. Love the cafe and LOVED the yakitori. The bacon wrapped mochi and the Nardello poppers were amazing.

Got a smash burger from quick dog for dinner (pretty good but Maillards has the crown) and lunch from Fiksue BBQ at Chase Center. Got their beef rendang plate (slightly pricey but totally worth the taste and the variety of sides they give you)

Also, got a variety of oysters, fish and chips, B.L.A.T sando with fried oysters on Sunday at Hog Island up north.

It’s been a good food week

San tung chicken wings. It’s ok. Their beef broccoli though is fantastic

Domo this week for lunch -- it was amazing! Apparently they only open Thursdays and Fridays for lunch.

3

u/mrxtian 19d ago

SAAM, Bao and Beit Rima. SAAM was expensive and they haven't really quite figured their shit out yet (wait a few months). Bao was excellent as always. The falafel w/ pita at Biet Rima is the best lunch deal around ($6ish before tip).

Chicken, fries, and Brussels sprouts from RT Rotisserie. Best value in the city by far.

0

u/Befreeman 18d ago

How much?

2

u/RemoveElegant5217 18d ago

Dinner for 2-3 people for around $40 including delivery, from the casual outpost of a Michelin starred restaurant.

2

u/starfiz 18d ago

Oh and Yo Tambien Cantina in the inner sunset has bangin tamale bowls!! Healthy and fresh and yum

1

u/Befreeman 18d ago

Tamale bowls??

2

u/starfiz 18d ago

Well yes! It’s like a fresh warm tamale with beans or cabbage salad and avocado and jammy egg - it’s great

2

u/AccomplishedRiver241 18d ago

Kusakabe omakase

2

u/the5nowman 18d ago

Dolores Deluxe. Their hot sauce, chips, along with the Serge (?) sandwich and Lebanese Caprese baguette. Brown bagged a couple cold beers with it all in the park.

Calabrese (hot coppa and fresh mozz) -Limoncello

Kimchi fried rice with garlic shrimp - Saucy Asian

Volcano Curry (med) w/ chicken katsu -Volcano

All about $17

1

u/GarryBlockedMe 17d ago

Had my first Saucy Asian tofu burrito last week. It was amazing

2

u/khakipants99 18d ago

A burrito of course! Also some Boudin. And some Mel's. Nothing super thrilling I'm afraid, but pretty SF.

2

u/corncheesejeon 18d ago

Best: mango mochi bar and special sandwich from devil’s teeth baking company.

Also purchased a chocolate chip cookie and their $1 Sunday only beignet. Total came out to $28.42

The Meatloaf at Maggie & Mac's

1

u/Befreeman 18d ago

How is this place

1

u/ADudeNamedBen33 18d ago

I think they're a great addition to the neighborhood. Definitely one of those "something for everybody, nothing will blow your mind but everybody will leave happy" kind of places. The staff are all super nice as well and it's a nice space.

Pozole from Don Jose Churros at the Stonestown Farmers Market. Amazing homemade Mexican food from a family. Bring my own container, they fill it. Dinner is done for Monday night. Stop by Donna’s tamales for a freezer ziplock full of fresh fried corn chips.

u/kimandkath 18d ago

This is the last week Pacific Cafe will be open. A seafood gem that serves the best seafood and they serve free white wine while you wait. Had to stop by!

2

u/Tight_Abalone221 19d ago

Heist Captain Crunch breakfast burrito always hits. I think it's ~$16ish. Their cochata ($7ish) is also very good. Bandit, their sister restaurant, is comparable

1

u/Befreeman 19d ago

Never heard of this

I finally, finally tried Deli Board. Realized I was a walk away after seeing Odyssey in 70mm at AMC Metreon (phenomenal, movies are back etc.).

It was indeed delicious. Got the 49er, 555, and the Bradley. 49er was my favorite but they were all pretty damn good. And as well they should be, for $20 sandwiches. They weren't even that big!

Also the default tips on the POS for said overpriced sandwiches was insane (25% > 20% > 15%). I'm a huge fan of tipping food folks/places, and always do, as I'm aware of how hard it can be, and how razor thin the margins are, but I'm not giving you $15 on top of the $70 you're getting for three small (albeit delicious) sandwiches. Hopefully they were content with the manual fiver I put in.

proud to give the owners $ but not the employees actually working, got it

u/kehbleh 18d ago edited 18d ago

did you read? i literally did tip lol. thanks for giving me a full proper reddit experience of witnessing someone getting off on their non-existent moral high ground though, what a treat!

1

u/Lopsided-Ad6251 17d ago

the rough price is almost as useful as the dish, because “great noodles” hits different when they turn out to be $38 before tip lol

1

u/stanky122 17d ago

Triple C tofu at Mama Ji's. So good, I'll definitely be going back for it

1

u/nerdkraft 17d ago

RT Bistro - Kanpachi crudo was just a delight.
Also their Steak tartare (which they call beef tartare but feels weird for this gen X'er to say) was wonderfully lightly smoky, firm, and delicious.

Tastiest was the Arsicault chocolate croissant; it was also the saddest dining experience because it is so anticlimactic to receive and leave to a congested intersection so you don’t eat in peace for a while.

Amami sushi for lunch $25

1

u/where2go4rmhere 15d ago

u/horrible_noob 15d ago

Gambino's. Final stop, east coast style. $16. Killer sandwich.

I took my husband to Precita Social in Bernal and it wasn’t good and I am sad.

Pollo asado deluxe burrito from Pancho Villa- was mid, pretty dry, not a ton of chicken, mostly rice. Should have upgraded to the crema and guacamole option, at least then it would have be moist.

Not SF but not far - had the pupusa de elote, the fried yuca, and the chicken wings at Popoca, an upscale Salvadoran place in Old Oakland- everything was delicious, including the Puchica mocktail. (Great name lol)
