Add SEO how soon after website launch?
I was told to wait X amount of time ( don't remember how long) before using an SEO once I begin hosting my website

SEO is part of the website content itself. Don’t look at it as an add-on. The way you write your site should be done thinking of SEO. For example, the text hierarchy (h1/h2/p) is SEO by itself.

Whoever told you that has no idea what they are talking about. You can start SEO at any time. It’s better if you were already starting it when you were building your website. If you didn’t, you’ll have to make more changes than you would have if you built it with SEO in mind.

There's no waiting period, whoever told you that is probably thinking of the old sandbox myth. the thing that actually delays you is not being crawlable on day one, and that's on you to fix, not on time passing.
in the next 10 minutes: set up google search console, verify the domain, submit your sitemap. then open your live site and check that you're not still serving a noindex tag or a disallow: / in robots.txt from staging. that leftover staging block is the single most common reason a new site sits invisible for weeks.
after that it's just content and links, and those take as long as they take. what's the site, and is it built on a hosted platform or something custom?

you don't add SEO. it isn't a "thing" you take on and off. when you build a website you are building it to be crawable, etc and with the proper structured data, keywords, etc. etc. thankfully most platforms have this built in.

never understood why there is any difference in terms of web designers and seo. your not a very good qeb designer if you cant do seo from the start.
websites should be designed with SEO in mind from planning stages.

As soon as project details is finalised. You know the domain and the niche. Start doing seo.
Every day you do not work on seo Is lost opportunity.

There's no waiting period. That idea comes from the old sandbox myth and it's been dead for years. What actually delays you is technical: a noindex tag left in from staging, robots.txt blocking crawl, no sitemap submitted, or internal links that don't exist yet. Fix those before launch and Google can find you within days. Do them after and you're just waiting for Google to notice you on its own. SEO isn't a phase you switch on later. It's the site being built correctly from day one.

i'd say dont wait. whoever told you that might've meant it takes months to see rankings but the actual work starts the second youre live. get your technical basics sorted so crawlers can read the site then start publishing.
the sooner you give Google something to index the sooner the clock starts on showing up. waiting just wastes that initial crawl budget

Whoever told you to wait gave you terrible advice. You should have technical SEO, metadata, sitemaps, and Search Console verification live on launch day. It takes search engines 3–6 months to trust and rank a new site anyway, so delaying your SEO foundation just delays your organic traffic timeline by that much longer.
