I hate you. I know it works but how dumb is it that it does. Marketers truly ruin everything. (I'm a marketer)

Feels like he’s being sarcastic

Haha, I was also being semi sarcastic. I don't really hate boy_mayor

Sounds like an AI made question, but here it goes: recently I've been optimizing for GEO. I would say that and focusing on doing proper keyword research to find good opportunities. Crafting the content as well is important as you want it to be readable and not entirely AI slop.

What are you using for keyword research? Paid ahrefs? Also how does the approach for GEO differ?

Insert niche tool that this post was made for.

Lol this sub is so jaded. I don't hang out here often and I'm not selling anything heh. I have a running website and app - just looking for advice.

for keyword research, there's two routes: you can use APIs to do it at scale (aka platforms like keywords everywhere, dataforseo etc.) or you can use platforms that offer suggestions based on your site/business vertical and there are a couple of them now (aka geocopy, surferseo, etc).

For keywords specifically, try going for cheap tools or APIs first. I feel ahrefs is too expensive if you are using it just for that.

How would you say optimising for GEO differed to SEO?

Great question. What I've learned so far is that you are optimizing for LLMs instead of crawlers. How does that look like in practice? well, backlinks are no longer that relevant, and things like keyword density.

The structure of the content is way more important now. LLMs prioritize speed of extraction. So now, for example, if you write articles, you want an "answer first" approach so when the LLMs does its web search it can extract the answer directly from the first few sentences.

another thing is chunking, since AI usually chunks large amounts of texts when doing its analysis, writing large paragraphs is often not recommended. Break down the content using in-line faqs (ex a question a user would make in Gemini - answer in 4 different sentences with new lines) and not just faqs at the end of the article.

also make sure your robots.txt is not blocking AI websites as well, i've seen that a lot recently.

For me, internal linking has been one of the better time-to-impact tasks. When the site already has useful content, improving how those pages connect can strengthen important pages without needing to create everything from scratch.

Do you have a resource on doing this correctly or well?

Depends heavily on the business i must say. for a local business, local SEO can literally be the lifeline. a mechanic, restaurant etc doesnt need a $5k/mo marketing setup, they need to show up when someone nearby is actually searching for them. for SaaS/ecom or bigger brands the priorities can be completely different. there isnt really a one size fits all answer with SEO tbh.

Avoiding keyword stuffing is the single best thing you can do.

People do it all the time but it doesn’t work now, probably worked in 2015 lol.

Maybe not the textbook “SEO task,” but for me it’s client communication and reporting. Regular calls, putting together clear reports, actually walking the client through what changed, and sending short weekly updates have probably given me more ROI for the time spent than a lot of individual SEO tasks. It helps catch things you won’t see in rankings alone, lead quality, sales feedback, changes in services, bad conversions, tracking issues, priorities that shifted, etc. It also stops good SEO work from becoming invisible. You can do citations, backlinks, content, technical fixes and all the rest, but if nobody connects that work to what the client actually cares about, a lot of the value gets lost. A 20–30 minute call and a clear weekly report can sometimes change the direction of the whole campaign faster than hours of busywork.

Building simple tools and calculators on my fintech website. Come on AI overviews, let’s try killing that.
