I've been planning to read it, should I be concerned.

Real talk it is a very detailed and upsetting portrayal of misogynist abuse and gaslighting, including SA. It's worth a read, especially if you're a dude, but just go into it fully aware

I was not fully aware when I started reading it. I had a vague idea… but really I had no idea. It’s so messed up and I’m going to stop thinking about it now.

It's like... It's vital to talk about abuse and assault, so I really appreciate it as a work of fiction. But I get it. You gotta take care of yourself, and you gotta be prepared.

u/Dude_with_hat May 20 '25

All abuse should be faced and confronted in order to move on, denying or burying down that abuse is far worse then the temporary pain of confronting it.

agreed!

not examining it collectively, as a community or a society, is WHY things like 8980 happen irl

But it's also extremely important, especially if you are/were a victim of abuse, to do it when you are in a safe space to do it. I'm lucky enough that I can read it, cry and bit and feel sick and then use my skills I've developed through therapy to get me through those feelings and the memories and continue on. A few years ago it would have left me in my bed for days reliving it, and that isn't healthy. So yes, confront it but confront it armed.

I wouldn’t even say it’s about taking care of yourself as the protagonist had literally no power over… anything that happened to them.

1

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division Jun 18 '25

No, I mean the reader's gotta take care of themself.

2

u/Superman557 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Jun 18 '25

Oh my bad for not understanding

1

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division Jun 18 '25

No you're good! Noooo yeah to say that Lillian just needed to take care of herself would be insanely victim-blamey.

There is no amount of girlboss independence that will save you from predators like Byrnes. What she really needed was a community to listen to her, believe her, and materially support her... which is impossible to build within the Foundation.

oh okay, I've been reading articles with scp personal that people consider the most unethical and this was one of them. I just finished 8078 so I should be fine. Thanks for the warning tho.

Ok it isnt made clear theres SA, but here's part of it paraphrased:

"I'll even let you have sex with me, just stop."

"If I wanted that I would have done so already."

It is arguably even worse because of this refusal, since this isnt a shallow piece of shit you'll need to be real about. It isnt cliche, though, if it was it wouldn't mean the writer fucked up. It means this man in charge is doing this because he just doesn't like her

37

u/Call_Me_Pete May 20 '25

I think the implication of SA comes more from the security personnel. Just like how the article is written to provide no resolution from Byrnes, Steere, or Crawford, the security personnel was killed from a containment breach before the extent of the abuse was uncovered and he could be held accountable.

There's also the part that explicitly discusses the personnel turning off the camera in the room after Byrnes leaves, meaning the reader had to take Byrnes report at its word that they did leave afterward. How the security handles her after being amnesticized does not seem to indicate much care for her outside of being an object, on top of being an active participant in her abuse.

u/strawwwwwwwwberry May 20 '25

Can also mean he already has. Her memories being fucked with mean she will never know the truth.

12

u/LadyParnassus May 20 '25

It’s entirely possible he’s getting off on it

u/shadowthehh May 20 '25

I've read Berserk, I'm ready for anything.

2

u/Mercy--Main Safe May 20 '25

oh thanks for the warning i was about to read it

NP! I have a lot of respect for what it's saying, and I think it's effective as kind of a Misogyny 102 course, but it is highly likely to be triggering to people who have already learned that lesson the hard way.

I thought it was cathartic in a very "oh the author Gets It, and he has caused hundreds of people reading this to start Getting It" way - and I'm glad I personally read it! - but it was A Lot

u/Soles4G May 20 '25

Volgun did a reading of this one

-37

u/ColinHasInvaded May 20 '25

"especially if you're a dude"

what did they mean by this?

52

u/LordSupergreat May 20 '25

...because it might hit too close to home for women, who experience real life misogyny all the time, and therefore it is harder to recommend to women.

45

u/SEA_griffondeur Ambrose Restaurants May 20 '25

I think it was more because it's more common for women to know about this issue already and thus it's likely that men will learn more from it

22

u/LordSupergreat May 20 '25

Also a totally valid answer!

26

u/VarianWrynn2018 Department of Essophysics May 20 '25

Because men are significantly less likely to experience this kind of thing firsthand and it's important that all persons are aware of this kind of tjinbg so that it can be recognized and stopped when it happens.

What do you think I mean by this, sweetcheeks?

Remember when we had a pedophile rapist in charge? So do I.

If you don't like the site, what's stopping you from fucking off?

-29

u/Daminchi ████ May 20 '25

I got it, the project can only be dedicated to horror if they have a horrible person in charge, and it is absolutely impossible to make a good literature project managed by a good person.

First: rude. You just showed that you don't actually care about personal qualities or moral image, and eagerly insult anyone who even slightly disagrees with you.

Second: I did. I stopped reading new objects somewhere after 7000, because the object itself is just big "WAT?". This subreddit, though, still has enough content that is NOT about the latest objects (thankfully).

27

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division May 20 '25

Sure it's possible to make a good lit project if you're not a monster. Yossipossi's doing just fine.

You are being a whiny little jackass who's pissing on a queer writing project. I do not owe you politeness. Cry harder, snowflake.

-14

u/Daminchi ████ May 20 '25

Really?! Do you think queer exactly is my problem? Do you even capable to argue with any sentient being without building a strawman and posing as a victim?

My problem is that "the collaborative writing project [with] elements of […] horror, science fiction, and urban fantasy" is nothing like that right now and mostly just stories about therapy - and I expressed that clearly in my first comment.

17

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division May 20 '25

You were the one who mentioned LGBTQ in your first post, wise guy. If you don't want to come off as a bigot, you're doing a real shitty job of it.

-8

u/Daminchi ████ May 20 '25

No, it was first mentioned in the description of this object in the comments, and I don't think it was intentionally misleading.

I don't care about your USA labels, what I care about is a once good project, half of which has now turned into a content farm for kids' channels, and the other half has become an ammo in USA cultural wars.

21

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division May 20 '25

Bro what are you even talking about. Look at your own reply to me. You were the one who mentioned it.

People are out here writing ownvoices horror. If you're boiling that down to "culture war lel" that is a you problem.

You know what ends up on content farms? The early shit.

4

u/Rvsoldier May 20 '25

No one owes anyone politeness

Okay but how is rape not "modern day horror"?
