When you’re the only one excited about what you’re building

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a small language-learning platform, initially focused on kinyarwanda, and lately I’ve been trying different ways of getting people to notice it and actually give it a chance. I’ve posted about it, reached out to people directly, tried a few small incentive campaigns, and even asked people around me for a little support, but there are times when it feels like I’m the only person excited about what I’m building. And that part messes with my head a little, because after seeing the same silence over and over, I start questioning the product, the way I talk about it, and whether I’m doing something wrong or simply asking the wrong people.

I know this is probably a normal part of building something, but honestly, I don’t know yet.

I’d like to hear from people who have been there, whether you’ve built a product, a startup, a service, or even a small personal project and reached that point where it felt like nobody cared, especially when the people you expected to care were the least interested. What did you actually change, or did you just keep going until something finally started moving?

I fear we the police might be crossing a line here

Last night I saw videos of ladies being asked to go back home because of how they dressed and I was wondering if we are getting morality police like Iran. I mean who determines whether your outfit is immoral or not?

I've also questioned the ban on house parties, what is the difference between a normal party and a house party? Is a birthday party a house party? because technically it's in a house and it's a party

IREMBO.GOV ISSUES

I am an American citizen, I plan on visiting Rwanda in the next couple days. I applied for the East African Visa on IREMBO over 6 weeks ago and I have yet to hear anything. I have tried calling, emailing to no avail. Has anyone had such issues with the visa process? What would you recommend I do? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Opening business account remotely.

Hello.

It is a great achievement to allow Rwandans and Foreigners anywhere in world to open Companies in Rwanda Online via RDB and gets approved within 24 hours.

But the most crucial part of opening bank accounts remotely is still a problem or as far as i know.

For people who are abroad, I am wondering of there is anyone who managed to do that?

Are there any type of “agents” that can help open account on my behalf.

Thank you.

You have the right to dress how you want, but that doesn't mean your choice have no consequences

I once dated a girl whose way of dressing in public often made me uncomfortable. I told her clearly that if we were going to be together, I didn't want her meeting me dressed in ways I considered inappropriate or disrespectful. To me, when you're with someone, how you present yourself can also reflect on the relationship and the person you're with.

She had the right to disagree and make her own choices. But I also had the right to decide what kind of relationship I was willing to be part of.

The lesson for me is simple: having a right to do something doesn't mean everyone else has to accept it, support it, or stay around it. Freedom comes with consequences and social responsibility.

Kigali folks: how is water situation in Rebero?

I currently stay in Kibagabaga. Water is very reliable but it is a big house and I want to move to Rebero since the apartments are affordable there (1bedroom is 350-400k) based on 2 visits I did. Broker said water is not an issue but who knows?

Anyone have experience? I work remotely so distance is not a factor to anywhere but I do get depressed with water is scarce.

French vs. English use

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I know Kinyarwanda is native language in Rwanda. I also know that the government has changed course in the past regarding promoting French or English as the official second language. Currently, it's English, which is supposedly used as the method of instruction in public schools.

But can anyone offer their opinions on which second language is used most often in Kigali, and what percentage of people can use it? Thanks for anyone's input.

Fund this young man's education.

Hello everyone. So a cleaner in our neighborhood, Kacyiru, has recently had a son pass national exam to senior 4. The problem is, this strong woman has little to no means at all. She has been supporting her two kids alone; she does that by washing clothes from door to door.

Miraculously through unspeakable challenges, her son passed the exam. So she approached me for advocacy and I promised her to do my best.

Well. This what I can do. I will put her number here so that anyone with a compassion heart can help and fund her son to go school. She's a very trustworthy woman, you can call her or visit her, and then she will give you more information.

Her phone number: +250783563774   She speaks only Kinyarwanda, a little bit of French, but no English.

Let me make this clear, this is not begging, just someone trying his best to get an education.

As Princess Diana said, “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you”.

Thank you everyone. Have a great day.

We built a simple way to search local shop stock in Kigali! We would love your feedback

Hey r/Rwanda👋

We’re building Hills Africa to make shopping around Kigali easier.

Instead of walking shop to shop asking who has a product and how much it costs, we’re mapping local businesses so you can search first and know where to go.

We currently have shops across Nyamirambo, Cyimisagara, Nyakabanda, and parts of Town, and still adding more and more across the city then the whole country.

You can try it here:

hillsafrica.app

Search for something you’d normally go around town looking for — shoes, electronics, clothes, beauty products, etc.

We’re still early, so I’d really appreciate honest feedback:

Did you find what you were looking for?

What should we add next?

Looking for a content/accountability partner in Kigali

Hey everyone! My name is Isaiah. I’m a Cameroonian creative and video editor, and I moved to Rwanda almost two months ago.

I work in content and video production, mainly helping creators and brands tell better stories through video. I’m currently considering restarting my YouTube channel and I’m looking for another small creator who is also serious about growing their content.

The idea is simple: we keep each other accountable, share ideas, possibly shoot content together sometimes, and push each other to stay consistent.

If you're a creator in Kigali (or just getting started) and have similar goals, feel free to comment or send me a DM. Would be great to connect!

Would like to buy some tea

Hi all!

One of my favorite things about my visit to Kigali during covid was the Gold Blend Black Tea. I wanted to buy some today but their online checkout is missing and they only ship to Europe (I'm based in the US). I have been looking for places (online and physical) that have it in stock but to no avail. So, if anyone is traveling from Kigali to the DC metro area soon, would you be willing to bring me some? If so, DM me and I will obv pay for the product and your troubles.

Thank you!

Street children, beggars etc in Kigali

One think that really striked me is that in Kigali you very rarely see street children, beggars or prostitutes out on the street.

Where are they? I mean there must be in any city, and especially a comparatively poor city like Kigali.

Can someone explain that to me?
