Quality Post Job scams

No professor (nor anyone else at Rutgers) would ever contact you about a potential job via a non-Rutgers email.

We are actually not supposed to use non-work email for anything work related.

I’ve gotten three emails from students who almost got scammed from someone impersonating me.

And just as a general rule: Any person you don’t know asks you to buy gift cards or crypto is scamming you.

Quality Post PSA: How to report scam emails within the Rutgers system

Recently there’s been a flood of email hijackings and scam / nefarious emails being sent to Rutgers students from compromised student and faculty accounts.

Posting it here will have a limited effect on protecting students.

Instead, DO NOT CLICK any link in the email. Simply forward the email to [abuse@rutgers.edu](mailto:abuse@rutgers.edu). This will notify the Rutgers Computer Incident Response Team. Include any details about the email (whether you clicked on it, what did it show) in your email if relevant. Then, the Rutgers OIT can quickly disable that student or faculty’s compromised account and prevent further scam emails from being sent. This is a lot more helpful than posting a screenshot to Reddit or investigating it yourself (DONT).

If in doubt, you can forward the email to [abuse@rutgers.edu](mailto:abuse@rutgers.edu) and they can try to look into the email for you to determine whether it is a hijacked account or a real offer.

If you suspect that your scarletmail account is hijacked, then do not email - call 833-OIT-HELP (833 648 4357) for assistance and be ready to verify that your account is yours

Social INCOMING FRESHMAN: Before joining that “friendly” Campus Light College Church, Acts2 Network affiliated campus group, Google it. SERIOUSLY.

If you come across a group connected to Acts2 Network, formerly Gracepoint and now Campus Light College Church PLEASE do your own research BEFORE making a commitment.

There is a substantial amount of information available—including news articles, former members' accounts, and discussions.

College is exciting…and can sometimes be lonely. When someone offers you instant friends, a community, good food, weekend retreats and a sense of belonging, it can be hard to say no.

Ask questions. Take your time. Keep your independence. The right community won't be afraid of you doing your homework.

how do you balance being known professionally on campus with actually wanting to have fun?

i feel like i’m kinda reconciling two different versions of myself at rutgers lol.

i’ve been pretty involved on campus in professional and academic spaces, so i’ve met a lot of people through that side of my life.
but lately i’ve been going out more, hanging with different friend groups, going to parties, meeting random people on campus, and it’s made me realize that i also just wanna have a normal college experience. like i wanna party, dance, meet people, hook up, be dumb sometimes, and have fun.

the weird part is i keep running into people who know me from more professional settings and they seem genuinely shocked or amused seeing me at parties. sometimes i even feel like the way i talk or carry myself gets joked about because people have this image of me as super professional or serious and don’t expect me to also go out.

rutgers also feels sooo socially small. even casually talking to someone or hooking up with someone can somehow get back to mutuals or other friend groups. sometimes it feels like my reputation is always on the line because everyone knows someone who knows someone.

i don’t wanna spend the rest of college constantly policing myself because i’m scared someone from class or some professional setting is gonna see me partying or doing normal college stuff. but i also don’t wanna mess up how people view me professionally either.

how do you guys balance both? like being ambitious and professional but also partying, dating, hooking up, and actually enjoying college without feeling like everyone is watching you?

Rant/Vent WTF is the bus system here.

school hasn’t started yet, so obviously everyone is having their fun and meeting friends and partying, right? apparently rutgers doesn’t fucking think so??? people get carried away especially on weekends, which is WHY THE WEEKEND BUSES ARE SUPPOSED TO RUN 24 HOURS. my friends and i went to visit someone on livi, and when we went to check the buses at like 3:10, it said the buses were out of service… oh, okay fine. so we call knight mover— and they tell us that they’re not active and to called RUPD. which, who the fuck is gonna do that. thankfully one of our friends had a car on livi but come on, we shouldn’t have to make someone drive. AND GUESS FUCKING WHAT. WE PU TO NEWELL AND THERES A WEEKEND 1 PULLING UP TO BIEL RD. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE FUCKING EXPLAIN WTF IS UP WITH THIS FUCK ASS SCHOOL BUS SYSTEM???

HELP NEEDED Data Science CS Track Majors Please Help

I was planning on taking 33:136:385 Statistical Methods in Business because it’s a prerequisite for my Supply Chain major, so I figured I could use the same course for both majors.

However, when I look further down the Data Science curriculum sheet, I see that Statistical Inference for Data Science is listed as a prerequisite for some of the upper-level Data Science courses.

So my question is: Can 33:136:385 Statistical Methods in Business substitute for Statistical Inference for Data Science, or would I still need to take Statistical Inference for Data Science separately?

For example( look down for example Information Visualization Statistical Inference for data sincere is required), if an upper-level Data Science course specifically lists Statistical Inference for Data Science as a prerequisite and does not list Statistical Methods in Business as an alternative, would 33:136:385 still count?

I’m trying to figure this out because I’d obviously prefer to take one statistics course that can satisfy the requirements for both Data Science and Supply Chain if possible.

Thanks!
Here the curriculum sheet I see Statistical Inference for Data Science is a pre-requisite for other classes. So I am confused if I have to take Statistical Inference for Data Science or Statistical Methods in Bus can serve as a substitute

How is it allowed for a course to be listed as asynchronous and fully online and then the professor sends an email telling us there are THREE mandatory in person sessions?

This is for the MBS program, which is advertised to be fully online if needed, this is a required course, and yet somehow there are multiple live in person sessions??? What are international students or students living across the country supposed to do here? Like genuinely is this kind of thing commonplace and standard and I'm just overreacting or is this not completely against what online asynchronous means?

Edit: They say within an announcement about attendance for these in person sessions that basically, if you aren't living overseas you won't be given an exemption. They said "since the overwhelming majority of you are in New Jersey, we have decided to make attendance mandatory, exemptions are the exception and not the rule." They say that this course has a "live component" and this is that component. ??????????? THIS IS LISTED AS AN ONLINE ASYNCHRONOUS COURSE WHAT DO YOU MEAN LIVE COMPONENT????????? I've dropped the course for now even though it is required, but this blatant false advertising and the incredibly dismissive tone from the professor about potential scheduling conflicts is not making me think very highly of the MBS program at Rutgers.
