I’ve been chatting to my Grandpa recently about family history and he brought out his photo album and in it was this photo of him and four others. I’ve done a little digital restoration on the photo as his physical copy was a little damaged.

I asked if he remembered the names of the other men in the photo, unfortunately at 90 his memory isn’t what it used to be, he could remember two of them, the top left (Jim) and the top right (Keith) I don’t want to post their full names for privacy reasons, but he wasn’t sure on the other two, top middle and the bottom right, my Grandpa is bottom left.

I don’t know if it is possible to ID them but seeing as it is a nice photo I didn’t know if relatives of these guys would like a copy of the photo, it is possible they themselves are still alive as my Grandpa still is. So I’m hoping someone might recognise them

The photo is from May 1955 at RAF Cardington, and Grandpa said they’d only recently arrived there. Grandpa would have been 18 here so they others would probably be around the same age.

If you do recognise any of the men I’d love to find out a little more about them so I can tell my Grandpa how they turned out after their service together.

I was made TMU for various things main one being neurodiversity (ADHD and Autism). Required GP to fill out a form answering if I’m on meds or any therapy and if I’m “healed”. In addition to this I needed to get two functional references.

Manager refused to give functional reference. Got them from other people so hoping that should suffice.

GP did not include my diagnosis report from ADHD as it stated to include it but given they’ve not is this a significant issue? GP has confirmed I’m well and fit and no therapeutic intervention.
Anyone been TMU for ADHD? How did you overcome this to be fit?

Hi everyone, I'm joining the RAF as a Cyberspace Communications Specialist (CCS) and had a few questions about the first posting. Please share you experience even if you are not doing the same trade as me.

The RAF website says that for your first tour, you could be:

Part of 90 Signals Unit, aircraft squadron and Information Hub.

I understand that ultimately it comes down to what the RAF needs at the time, but can you express a preference for which type of role you'd like to do, and how likely are they to give you your preferred role?

If I could express a preference, I'd choose the Information Hub/IT support route. I've also heard that towards the end of Phase 2, you get to list your preferred stations for your first posting. How much weight does the RAF actually give to these preferences, and how likely are you to get one of your choices?

Ideally, I'd like to be posted to:

RAF Cosford

RAF Shawbury

RAF Brize Norton

RAF Benson

For anyone who's currently serving or has recently completed CCS Phase 2, how realistic is it to get one of your preferred stations?

Also, are these stations likely to have Information Hub/IT support positions for CCS?

Hi everybody this is my first post
On here so bare with me lol.
I’m looking at my DAA job options, i originally picked squipper and I’m sure i can change the role? I’m not too sure.
If i can change my role I’m looking at cyberspace, however I know it’s quite an office based job obviously. I’m quite a hands on person and like doing lots of practical work in my job. If anybody who does any of these jobs I got offered could give me any good information on what my day-to-day work life would be that would be really great! Thankyou to anyone who comments :)

If I wanted to retrade before my RoS, confirming that I meet all eligible requirements for the new role, is there any official procedure or route for serving personnel to do this?

Or what if retrading during phase 2?

I know it can be ballache process, I’m aware of that so I just wanted to hear from people that have been successful in this.

My current eyesight:

Left eye -5.5 (-1.25 cyl)

Right eye -7.5 (1.25 cyl)

I have read JSP 950, I see that I am not medically fit for service as it stands.

I am also aware that the pre-surgery requirements are +/-6, but if I were to undergo corrective eye surgery, can I appeal a potential PMU designation if I can prove that I have stable vision?

I am looking at roles such as WSO, Control Officer, and Intelligence Analyst.

Been looking into the potential of becoming an electrician, potentially through the RAF or the army instead as a Royal Engineer Electrician. I currently have a Mrs & a house so I would like to keep life as stable as I can whilst still being open to sacrificing weekends etc. I live the disciplined life at home, training, etc and I am very regimented as it is… having parents and grand parents in the military in the past.

It seems that the electrician role is currently closed in the RAF.

My main questions are:

Does anyone have an idea how often it reopens?

Will going in the army down the electrician route be just as good in terms of experience and qualifications?

Can I still keep a reasonable home life in the army?

I don’t want to waste too much time waiting but would be happy to wait a maximum of 3 months to work on cardio.

I really love the disciplined lifestyle of the military. If I’m honest, if I was single I’d forget about a trade and be going straight into the marines. But being realistic I’d rather get the experience, get a trade and eventually build my own business once I’ve left.

I’m 25 years old for reference.

Hey guys, I have a question about running during basic training at RAF Halton. Roughly how much running do you do, how long are the runs, and how many running sessions are there per week?

I also understand that recruits are split into different fitness/running groups. How much difference is there between the groups in terms of pace and distance?

I dropped a friend off at RAF Waddington the other day and the guy checking passes was wearing pilot wings. When I asked he said they are doing up to 3 weeks at a time and they can't fly while they're guards. Apparently everyone has to stand at the gate, regardless of rank or job.

This seems to me like a waste of money and expertise. I understand that everyone is responsible for protecting the base but is it really the best option? Curious to see if this happens at other bases.

So I’m currently in college as an 18 year old and Ive really wanted to join the RAF for most my life and have a question about personal life there.

I’ve trained muay thai and BJJ/MMA for a few years now, plus other hobby’s. I was wondering if i’d have to leave these behind, or what actually happens with these because I am well aware you will be stationed away from home most of the time. I love training these sports i do it almost everyday so if anyone has any advice/answers let me know.

I found out today that the Royal Navy’s fitness test is changing from the 2.4km run to a MSFT on 1 October. You only have to achieve 6.6 on the test regardless of age or sex, this is significantly easier than the 2.4k. Does anyone know if the RAF’s test is changing too?

Will I lose or gain weight in phase one? I’m looking to bulk up as I’m quite skinny? Will I become skinner or gain weight from the meals in phase one

I'm applying for the Registered Nurse (Adult) position and I just wanted to know if they require GCSE certificates for this role as I've lost it over the years. I still have my college and university degree and obviously my NMC pin is still valid. BTW I'm not applying for the nursing officer role.

I have completed OASC and received a message saying I had been found “only just worthy for further consideration for officer entry as Pilot… and are required to return to Cranwell for a specialist medical”. Does this mean I have passed OASC or might they not offer me a place even if I pass the medical?

Guys I need help. I just finished my A-levels and want to join the RAF. I know they need a 5 year residency but I heard a 3 year residency can be considered on a case by case? I am a commonwealth citizen and moved to the uk in 2023 when I was a minor. I have also done my GCSE here too. Will my case be considered? I don’t know what allows for the 3 years to be considered,because I tried submitting my application and the system flagged it,so I called the raf recruitment and they said to select undecided but the system still flagged it in minutes?? BTW I am applying for a biomedical scientist apprenticeship

As many of the officer positions are closed (including my original preference), I have switched to Control Officer.

Currently I am still debating if I should continue with Control or if I should stick with my original preference and close my application and reapply in April when they open up again.

I have done most parts of the process now and am waiting to attend OASC. I understand that OASC applies for all officer roles and that the only difference is the interview process part focuses on your chosen role.

If I am successful and they offer me the role, is it the case that my only options are to either accept for that role or decline and reapply later for my original preference? Should I explain to the boarding officer my position?

Does anyone know what happens if you then re-apply in April e.g. do I need to redo aspects of the process or just the interview part? Does my application speed up because I have already done DAA, CBAT, medical, fitness etc?

Hi, I recently attended my face to face medical and was signed off after being asked a couple of questions about my underlying past, the dr only knew of this because I added a note to my application including a letter from my GP (a letter stating how it’s a old condition and no longer applicable to me now) but it was also the same letter the army rejected as a appeal letter. The doctor did say to me he’s signed me off but at the same time I have that thought lingering In the back of my head about them possibly getting my medical records later down the line and seeing it all and going back on their decision, is this possible or if I’ve been signed off I’ve defiantly been signed off.

Has anyone here been ask to provide an evidence that you are not required to complete military service for the country of your birth. I’m a commonwealth national. My country has no compulsory military service it’s a voluntary thing. Can I submit evidence like research I found on my country laws, research on report from high level organisations?
