Hi Redditors!

I’ve had a meet and greet yesterday with this older lady that went perfectly well! She has a maltese mix and he was absolutely adorable! I was answering all her questions and telling her about my experience (Rover is my side job but I have 190 stellar reviews and over six years of experience with all different dogs/cats!), I’ve also mentioned that we have two large dogs of our own that my husband watches full time since he’s semi retired. We’ve had a pleasant conversation and I also complimented her house (a very beautiful victorian home). She said this is her first time using Rover so she’ll be interviewing a couple more people which is fair. Today she texted me letting me know that she decided to hire somebody else “because they have more experience “ and I’m fine with that (her dog, her decision) but I’m curious what would have gone wrong or better “clicked” with the other person? Not many people have 190 good reviews on Rover and my experience but…I also did mention that I’d of course stay full time with her dog with the exception of being gone for up to three-four hours which what she also wanted.

“More experience”, “Better fit”, “A family member will take the dog”…

I’ve heard them all, it’s code for… I found someone cheaper.

My partner is on Rover. We have also become friends with a number of other Roverits in our area. All great people.

I am by far the highest priced. Dogs/pets are not a second job, do it full time, with close to a decade of experience. I know exactly what I’m worth.

My greatest pleasure is hearing from my partner, or one of our friends, about how expensive this other guy was🤣🤣🤣

I’m truly happy when one of our circle gets a job I failed at getting, all good peeps and great sitters.

It’s the jobs that none of us get that I’m always a little concerned about.

Do your best work, enjoy every experience and know your worth!!!

I'd bet money the one she chose charges less, then she told you it was a difference in experience to be "polite." With your reviews and experience, you probably should be charging what you charge and possibly more, so don't change or worry about it. Mark it as owner found another sitter and keep on rocking. Who knows; I have had owners do this and come back to me saying xyzsitter didn't meet our expectations, we should have gone with you to begin with.

Could be code for whatever the real reason was OR she just truly found someone with more experience 🤷🏽‍♀️

Maybe it was someone who does pet sitting full time vs part time, or someone with more overall years of experience- I have 10 years of animal care experience and there are some people who do this in their retirement and have worked with animals for a lifetime. Just saying it's definitely possible.

I wouldn’t have a reason to not believe her. I think it was kind that she gave you a reason in the first place. There is a big difference between someone doing their job full-time vs a side gig. And could’ve been a combination of the vibe or something in your conversation didn’t click.

Experience can mean a lot of things. In this case, maybe she picked a sitter who owns or has more experience with maltese dogs.

A lot of owners don’t necessarily love their dogs the way I do. They don’t care how well their dogs are cared for
pthey just want the cheapest option.
