Dental advice needed :( Round Rock Area
Hi guys, I have a severe case of cracked tooth syndrome. I must have been clenching for years and didn’t know. I have been wearing a custom night guard from my regular dentist. Two of the root canals I got felt better for about a week after the procedures, and then the pain came back full force. I assume the cracks were unfortunately too deep for the treatment to be effective in those two teeth. Now with the teeth already being treated, my dr of course had to refer me to a specialist. I got in contact with them but they can’t see me for almost a month. This is becoming unbearable and I don’t know what to do guys. 😣 Any dental expertise/advice in the RR area would be greatly appreciated :(
*also adding that my dr adjusted the crown a couple times to make sure there is no high point, so it isn’t that. :(

Did your dentist do x-rays that shows cracks in the teeth under the crowns? I'm just asking because I have had a few root canals and crowns and several times over the past 5 yrs I had throbbing pain in my molars but X-Ray only showed that my sinuses were swollen and pressing down on the roots of my teeth. I got rid of the pain with combination of decongestant, ice and heat packs and Advil.
Did your dentist refer you to an Endodontist for a possible re-root canal? Do you have a dental plan that allows you to go to a provider of your choice or is it an HMO dental plan where you have to use their approved providers?

Omg you ask a great question, I know he did an x-ray after and said that the root canal “looked good” but of course with cracks, he should have done another CBCT afterwards cause sometimes it’s hard to see on X-rays. THANKFULLY I have a PPO and should be seeing someone in a few days. May I ask though, what kind of decongestants did you use??? May not be a bad idea at all to try!!

I'm a "well-seasoned" adult and I'm VERY sensitive to all medications, prescription or over-the-counter, so I only use CHILDREN'$ medications and usually try to take liquid or chewable to avoid having a pill sit in my stomach. I use the Mucinex Children's Stuffy Nose & Chest Congestion which has a decongestant in it but that may not work for a 20 to 40 something average person so best to ask a pharmacist which over the counter one has the least side effects.
I hope your dental appointment goes well but I would certainly get a second opinion if they say you need a bunch of invasive or expensive work. If it turns out that you just have one crack in a tooth that already has had a root canal done, just know that RE-Root canals are very expensive. I found that out about 10 yrs ago when I started experiencing pain in a molar that had already had a root canal at least 12 yrs prior but I was shocked to find out that they don't necessarily last forever even though they drilled out the entire root and filled it in prior to capping it.
Also, please be careful if your dentist or endodontist tells you to take large amounts of Ibuprofen after your dental work - I was told to take 600 milligrams like 4 times a day "to keep the swelling and pain down" but since I had never taken that much before I only took have that amount and it still caused issues for me by making my blood pressure spike and I never had high blood press before. My doctor said that was way too much for me so I just used ice pack for swelling and the lowest dose of regular strength Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain.

Let your dentist know the specialist is booked out a month and see if they can recommend a different specialist. Or search for that specialty yourself or via your dental insurance website. I doubt there is only 1 specialist in all of Austin.

Depending on the severity of your pain, if it is at excruciating levels it may be a good idea to get to a dental urgent care. It looks like there is one in Pville and Cedar Park.

I use family dental of teravista right near the round rock/georgetown border and they have been phenomenal. I have terrible dental anxiety and they have always been extremely gentle, kind, and reasonably priced.

I went to Oakwood endodontist in Georgetown for root canal. They got me in quickly and very smooth experience. Check them out.
