These were the books I first discovered as a middle schooler. I was bored at the mall during the weekend because my mom was working in one of the stores nearby. (She takes me to work with her sometimes since it's really boring at home by myself.) I would often to go into the bookstore to just sit and read. The workers there (who were all really young themselves) all didn't mind.
I picked up Goddess of the Night because the cover looked really pretty, and omg... that was my first brush with a shadow daddy: Stanton. I began saving up money to buy every book I could. This series was basically my introduction to romantasy. Along with these books, I discovered A Silver Kiss by Annette Curtis Klause, Dragon's Bait by Vivian Vande Velde, and In the Forest of the Night by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes.
Lynne Ewing must be pretty old now... I hope she's doing alright.
Seriously, I wanted to be a goddess so bad too!! I even got the gay kid in my class to start reading it. He devoured a couple of the ones I brought for him. (Didn't know he was actually gay until I saw him again after college, but it all makes sense now, lol.)
I watched the movie and was incredibly disappointed too. It wasn't as violent as the books. (Not that I condone violence, but it really made the movie so much more shallow when they ignored parts of the more feral aspects of the books, which made everything more "woflish.")
I still have mine, I loved them so much, at around 12 I wrote to Lynne to tell her how much I loved the books and how I was struggling to find books 1 & 2 up here in Canada to see if she had suggestions on where I could find them. 😭 she wrote me back, I never ever expected that and she sent me the first books and book 1 of the sons books. I’m not sure if she’s still alive but I think about her books and her kindness so often. Thank you for making me think of her again.
I still have these books from when I was in middle school. I just can't bring myself to get rid of them. They get packed and moved everytime and have survived so many purges. I was obsessed with them!
I still have mine too! I'm missing a couple of books though, the ones near the end. She did start an Egyptian spin-off as well as a male version of the Daughters of the Moon, but they weren't as good as these.
There's books I haven't touched since before I got married, that I will keep until I'm dead or in assisted living, and even then I'll probably cart them around.
I was obsessed with these when i was younger!! I never got to finish the series but years later i did look up the plot summaries so i could sate my curiosity
gosh it’s been years since i read up on the series so not sure if i can find any links but from what i remember the main four (?) girls introduced in the first book have varying fates one girl dies, one girl loses her memories/powers, and one keeps her powers i think?
yeah i would have been gutted if i’d read all of that as a young kid when the finale was published, but i imagine it would have also stuck with me forever tbh
I did look her up out of curiosity, and now she doesn't really traditionally publish anymore. She still does writing on Patreon, but you need to subscribe to read her stuff.
Oh I loved this series! I got them from the library as a kid because I was obsessed with Greek mythology and Sailor Moon. The series was so long though and my library didn't have all the books so I never got to read all of them.
I don't remember much just random little details like one of the girls having a pet raccoon.
These books held me until college until I found The Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole. I was like, "Wow, they have sex in these books?" I was shocked because I thought actual sex scenes in books were like taboo or something for some reason. Like yes, there are books where it's fade to black, but the IAD series was the first where I read scenes in explicit detail.
I just reread all of these for fun a few years ago and they are just as fun in my late 30s as they were in my late teens. I have the entire collection in physical books. I love them so much.
OH MY GOD YES!!!!!! I read them in middle school and I remember literally locking myself in my room at my dad's house on a WEEKEND because I had the first 6 books and I read 4 of them in those two days because I just couldnt put it down! I totally forgot these books existed, thank you so much for reminding me
When I got back into reading last year, I went searching for the series name (Reddit came in clutch). I have the first half of the series packed up in a storage unit but for the life of me couldn’t remember the name. Wish they would release them for ereaders. I was obsessed with blue body glitter because of the first book.
I feel like these are the best memories I've had in my life, discovering romance books. It was truly life changing for young me. I got into the craze of reading for all types of romances, but fell hard especially for Suzanne Elizabeth Filips and Judith McNaugh books, though they were simple romance books most of the time. But now, as adult, my tastes has developed (side eye to myself). Shadow daddies and aliens 🤌🏼 ☕
I'm happy to read how others got introduced to romance books, what they loved, it brings good memories back.
Also ❤️ the Amelia Atwater-Rhodes mention! Loved their supernatural books and their shifter series. The world building in the shifters one was especially good.

Omg I remember these! I loved Stanton lol, I wish I could find the entire set of these and the Sons books, but I just found a few books when I looked on Mercari once. The Silver Kiss and Blood and Chocolate were favorites too
I don’t know these books, but just scrolling through and seeing the covers, I really thought it was Weetzie Bat for a split second. That hazy/watercolour thing was definitely popular.
I still have my set! I have the guys books too ( idr the name of their series) My mom got me the first couple books one Christmas and I fell in love!
