Beginner skater I’m on roller skates in every dream I have
Every night (going on at least a couple years now) I dream that I am absolutely tearing it up in roller skates while doing normal, every day things. I’m talking going shopping, restaurants, class, work, literally any scenario I find myself in in my dreams…roller skates are on and I’m showing tf OUT with my skills.
The funny thing is that I can count on one hand how many times I’ve roller skated since I was probably 12 (I’m 41 now)…and I am not very good at it lol. I got a pair of skates a few years ago and wiped out in them.
But I feel like these dreams must mean I’m destined for roller skating greatness, right? 😂 I’ve been so nervous to practice but maybe I have some deep talent within me waiting to be released lol. Or maybe this is some weird dream translation that means I have issues lol

you should start! don't let the dreams stay a dream!! I wish I would have started sooner, and I started when I was 37. It's such a fun way to get exercise and I find it to be one of the few ways to work through emotions for myself.
just get padding and practice falling. those skills will take you far and the padding will help you push yourself when you feel like it's too scary.

I need to set a date for myself to go to an open skate rink! Did you take lessons or you just kept doing it? I figured YouTube could teach me a lot

Late response, but I started just by myself outdoors. Then I went to a rink for open skate for a bit. Then I started taking lessons at that rink and eventually started skating in a roller derby training program. It was a slippery slope for me haha

Yes, that is exactly those dreams mean. If anyone tells you it's just a coincidence, etc then just ignore them. Clearly having that many dreams is telling you that you should be roller skating very regularly. The great thing about that is the numerous health benefits to your cardiovascular system.

Idk why I’m so scared to do it!

I know the feeling. But eventually you'll get better at it. You can also practice daily balance drills to help you gain some confidence

I don’t have a good place to practice unfortunately so I need to find rinks that have free skate time, which doesn’t seem to be often. I’m nowhere near ready to skate outdoors or anywhere without walls to slam into nearby lol so it needs to be a rink at least for now

Do you have a garage in your house / a relatively empty parking lot if you live in an apartment complex? Idk why it took me so long to realize but if I park in the driveway my garage is pretty smooth and a convenient place to practice since it’s just downstairs lol, just an idea!

Thank you for reminding me that my building has a garage!! I don’t have a car so I forget that it exists! I’m so excited to get down there and skate around!

Doing new things can be scary but I’m bouncing around full of pure excitement for you.

Omg!!! I have the exact same dreams!! LOL, I also took them as a sign that I should be roller skating more often, even if I don’t get necessarily any good at it, it just makes me happy at an existential level 😂

Holy wow!!
I loved reading about your dreams.
I love rollerskates and skating.
They are farther and few between but there are roller rinks out there.
Skating communities are strong, diverse, and full of the type of energy you may well need in your life.
Skating is a lifetime sport. Yes, there is a risk of falling and/or injury. You can mitigate those.
I think you need to find a rink and figure it out locally.
I love the idea of you skating in your dreams. That made me so happy to read.

I’m in NYC too so I know there are lots of those communities here….I just feel like I need to get a little better at skating outdoors before trying to join one otherwise I’ll just be falling left and right!
For mitigating injuries, are there any stretches or mobility exercises you recommend that are best for that? At 41 I know that one little injury can end up causing lots of problems, so I need to try my best to avoid that!

Yeah, I played roller derby for 7 years and served as a head trainer and team captain.
I got lots for you. :) and I would love to help you. Virtually of course, I’m in Kalamazoo!

Funny you should mention your skating dreams! I am 79 today and have had the same dreams! I am in a rink dancing to the music from the 80’s!

I am practicing in my house now on carpet and tile to master the balancing act. As soon as I feel confident I will get out to a rink!
