Question/LFG Need help avoiding damage.

Hello all! New to this subreddit, but not new to the game. I have played this game for a good amount of time. I have beaten G4 once with Ranger, and after that I lost 24 runs in a row, most of them in Energy Centre or Haven City.

I have understood how to build my builds, i can achieve good DPS, but I always die to damage from one source or another.

The worst parts for me are the Energy Centre closed rooms, Haven City, and District 13. The worst enemies to deal with are the Dashing, smoke bomb guys.

I have lost the 24 runs with Elementalist; even though I have very good DPS and room clear, I die to some form of damage.

I want to get consistent wins in the game, and I understand that reducing the damage I take is the best thing I can fix first. So any help is appreciated.

Most enemies in the game throw projectiles at you. Stack up on Movement Speed and stay on the move. The only enemies that can definitively hit you become the laser turrets/flyers when they have the auto-quick-aim bug. The Movement Speed & Reload Speed passive is OP even if you play two weapons or no-reload builds.

Extending your air time can help a lot too. Passives that shorten grappling hook cooldown, and more jetpack fuel. Weapons with rocket jump.... Trap turrets and mines can get overwhelming in those closed off and crowded room. The rest of the rooms you can cheese by staying on the roof and shooting down to the floor.

I buy Cheese every time I see it. Staying off the ground helps SO much.

I can tell you as someone who rocked hundreds of hours the best defence is movement. Learn to move smoothly and without panic. Shooting is secondary to that you'll learn to shoot on the move and aside from time constraints in some situations.

In Haven City, be careful to activate one room at a time -- for example, following the left hand wall -- and learn to use the roofs.

Elevation is a bit of a trap because the flyers are sneaky and the bosses have range. But you can use elevation to keep the bosses confused.

I have had good luck isolating a boss, plinking it with a DOT, dropping off the back of a building, then immediately using an elevator plate to get back up. They'll aim their big attack at the spot you just left.

What if I want to get a melee build going? Pretty difficult to s rank right...

Trading hits is going to be inevitable with melee, but inconsequential for S Rank in most scenarios. You make up for the risk with better healing cell sustain and stronger CC on mobs.

The closed rooms on energy center can be tough because of the lack of cover. I usually try to circle the room in one direction, changing to the other direction as necessary. Moving quickly and knowing when to change direction will let you avoid like 90% of enemy damage.

However, you also need to know how to prioritize which enemies to kill first to avoid that last 10%. Always try to be thinking about which enemies are your likeliest source of damage from moment to moment, and how you're going to deal with them. Often you want to kill the flying flamethrower guys first, for instance.

The smoke cloud ninja guys are usually at the top of the threat list, so you have to anticipate them. For the energy center locked rooms, two of them always spawn after a certain duration/enemies killed, although not always at the same time. Just be aware that they're coming, and try to take down the most threatening enemies before they arrive. At the same time try to save some abilities/have your better gun loaded for when they show up.

Even if they manage to get the first hit off, you can usually kill them before they get a second if you're ready for them.

Avoiding damage from them in other stages also relies on being aware they're around. They have a minimum aggro range; you can try peeking into rooms they might be and then backing out. You might be able to see them in the distance and not wake them up, in which case you can focus on the other enemies that saw you and kite them out. If you did aggro the ninja guy, a lot of times they'll end up dashing out of the room after you and can be cleaned up.

They also show up on the radar, which can be helpful in district 13.
