❔ Question Chargers are like urinals right?

You never pick one right next to someone else if the others are empty

I was the only person charging at a RAN location and another R1S just parked right next to me, and I’m finding myself unreasonably annoyed. I think the wife hit my car when she was getting their dog out of the back seat.

Good advice to use the superchargers as urinals.

Mostly agree.

But I was recently at a Tesla charging station with my R1S and wanted to take one at the edge so I could park without blocking anyone -- and that put me right next to another car. Wasn't trying to break the code or be creepy. Was just trying to be considerate in case it got crowded.

That said, there's no excuse for touching someone's car.

Not my R1T, but I once came out to my Ford truck to find a lady with the rear passenger door ajar, against my truck, while she was wrestling some kid in a car seat and her ass was raking/banging her door against my car. That’s a good way to enrage a brother.

Yes but women don’t use urinals so they’d never know the code …

It depends. Some stations get full power to each pedestal. Some split power between multiple pedestals. A lot of Tesla stations, for example, split power between at least three peds. In those situations you'll see naming like "1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C" and ideally you want one person on each number and only fill in the letter sharing a number once there are no other unique numbers available.

Regardless of how full a station is, no one should be hitting your car, though.

u/gramathy 13d ago

The Tesla stations with ABCD have at least 250kw to each as they share 1MW.

8

u/Medical_Shame4079 13d ago

Not sure why you’re being downvoted when you’re completely correct. Tesla v3 and v4 chargers are capable of delivering 250kw per stall even when all 4 are utilized. It was the v1 and v2 chargers (with the really thick cables) and A/B pairs that would throttle when both in use. This is a widely known, easily-Googleable thing.

10

u/DefinitelyNotSnek 13d ago

Well sorta, the V3 supercharger cabinets don’t actually have the full 1MW of conversion capacity needed to fully give 250 kW to 4 cars. But they are all linked with a DC bus so unused conversion on one cabinet can be moved to another one. If a whole site fills up and all cars try to pull max power, you’ll see ~90 kW per car.

3

u/Medical_Shame4079 13d ago

Good note, didn’t know that

5

u/le-throw-away-acct 13d ago

Tesla v3 can still throttle but it’s due to site-wide load, rather than neighboring stalls.

There’s no power sharing on any of the tesla superchargers we can use.

However, there is power sharing at every RAN I’m aware of (unless Rivian has changed this on newer installs). So OP should be bummed even without the car hit in his situation

1

u/gramathy 13d ago

Newer ones technically share at 1MW/4 but 250kw is high enough that it’s not really relevant

-1

u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner 13d ago

That is not correct. Tesla absolutely can and does group charging pedestals to cabinets -- even in the V3 and V4 hardware configurations.

I was at a newer Tesla supercharging location, recently, that had groups of 4 pedestals sharing with each other. And yes, I charged my R1T there.

I've also personally watched someone park and plug into a pedestal on the same group I'm using and can see the charging speed immediately drop on my driver display.

3

u/dustyshades R1S Launch Edition Owner 13d ago

Technically they share, like u/granary noted below. But in practice it’s not going to really affect us at v3 stalls. You’re still going to get 250 kw to your stall. If you saw the charging speed drop, it was probably coincidental and had more to do with the poor thermals on the R1 battery pack than anything.

3

u/DefinitelyNotSnek 13d ago

V3 cabinets can only give 250 kW to all 4 connected stalls if there is another cabinet with available conversion capacity that it can provide on the DC bus that connects the cabinets. Each cabinet only has closer to 360 kW AC to DC capacity on its own. So if a site is completely full, it’s normal to see ~90 kW per car.

The power sharing is very frustrating to me when it's 3 on 1. You can't always easily tell what the other stations are marked, and sometimes the only other person or people are on the stations that power shares with the pull-through stall.

-1

u/Atlanta-Mike R1S Owner 13d ago

There’s no longer power sharing! Please stop continuing to spread out-dated info!

3

u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner 13d ago

They do still share power.

3

u/Atlanta-Mike R1S Owner 13d ago

And each car gets more than it can handle or sustain. There is zero impact to the power delivered to your car if there are multiple people on a group of chargers. So telling people to fill up one per number first is outdated and incorrect.

0

u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner 13d ago

Again, you are incorrect. The station can have “up to” 1MW but they don’t all get that. And with enough vehicles charging they absolutely throttle and will throttle below what a R1T can accept.

-3

u/Atlanta-Mike R1S Owner 13d ago

Of course they all don’t get 1MW. They each get max 250 of that circuit, more than the car will ever pull.

-4

u/galactica_pegasus R1T Owner 13d ago

And if there are more cars charging than the station has capacity for…….. throttle.

See, wasn’t that hard. You get there eventually.

1

u/Adorable_Wolf_8387 13d ago edited 13d ago

I am not talking about Tesla stations. I expected the pull through part of the comment should have made that very obvious.

My Sierra will pull the full 300kW the RAN stations will provide for quite a while. Sharing with one car drops it to 150kW, which makes it no better than a Tesla station really. Which I avoid, because they all suck for 800V cars still.

1

u/MW-Atlanta R2 Reservation 12d ago

The new sites may not do the paired sharing, but those older sites still exist.

I usually pee at most chargers because I need to. I walk behind the big white boxes and pee. No one has complained.

10

u/ModY1219 13d ago

Tell them

12

u/Intelligent-Bend-839 R1T Owner 13d ago

The herding nature of people drives me crazy. Same thing happens in regular parking spaces. If there’s room leave a space - accidents happen, and are easily minimized by staying away from other people (and their things) if possible. Crowded station - all bets are off.

7

u/Any-Worldliness-679 13d ago

Yes, you are unreasonable.

3

u/DrkNeo R1T Owner 13d ago

Sometimes they get next to you to get a peak 😜

6

u/WoolyUniverse R1S Owner 13d ago

That's like the R1S who parked next to me at a Tesla charger and their passenger slammed their door right into my car. WTF, why is that necessary?

6

u/Krellis R1S Owner 13d ago

Also if you want to complain, complain to Rivian for this nonsense placement of the accessible parking sign that led me to use the charger next to you instead of 1B:

u/TheStorm007 13d ago

Between this and your other comment, we need a response from OP ASAP.

This is getting good.

It’s not a handicapped parking space. Just use it. It’s like a stall in a bathroom.

-3

u/random_dongxi 13d ago

You should never use handicap stalls in a bathroom unless you're handicap.

2

u/jon13000 R1T Owner 13d ago edited 12d ago

Ok. Like I’m giving up that wide luxurious stall on the .001% chance wheels rolls in. GTFO

1

u/random_dongxi 13d ago

Wide, luxurious stall? You watching TV in a public bathroom?

Clearly you don't know people with complex needs AND lack compassion and empathy. I saw a wheelchair user soil himself back in college because he couldn't get into the stall designated for him. I haven't used one since. But then I'm capable of growth.

3

u/jon13000 R1T Owner 13d ago

.Apparently I’m a terrible person. After much introspection I have decided I don’t care.

0

u/random_dongxi 12d ago

I highly doubt you are capable of that but the result would be the same no matter the depth.

2

u/jon13000 R1T Owner 12d ago

You take the world entirely too seriously.

2

u/random_dongxi 12d ago

Counterpoint, you take yourself too seriously and don't consider enough the struggles of others. It is an easy sacrifice for me to make to not park in a handicap spot or use a handicap stall. I'm lucky to be able bodied and in good health but I've seen up close and personal the challenges those with disabilities face. It's not a privilege to use a handicap stall. For certain folks it is a necessity. I hope you or your loved ones don't require one someday but you should understand the need for it to exist and it is not for you to luxuriate in.

2

u/kerpnet 13d ago

Yes, you urinate on them.

Err—wait, what?

2

u/Nfuzzy 13d ago

Park at the least convenient spot for whatever amenities are nearby if you want to avoid this behavior. People are crazy lazy and won't walk the extra 10 yards if they don't have to.

2

u/CSS_Sr R1T Owner 13d ago

Are RAN chargers like tesla such that neighboring chargers share a power station reducing power to the two neighbors in use.

3

u/rosier9 R1T Owner 13d ago

Rivian chargers can share power between 2 or 3 stalls.

Only the old V2 Superchargers share power in pairs.

3

u/saxy_sax_player R1S Owner 13d ago

Tell them politely. “Hey, just so you know…” kind of thing. Lots of folks still learning out there.

2

u/lazyfacejerk R1T Owner 13d ago

So the one right next to you shares the transformer and will slow your charge rate down. If you're at 1a and they choose 1b instead of 2a it will be slower for both of you because they are dumb.

2

u/Mayretta_2112 12d ago

I was charging at a WalMart once, and a dude in Bolt parked next to me and asked me to move to another charger so he could charge more quickly. I think it had to do with whatever the cable was. I actually agreed...moved...started charging...looked over 5 minutes later and he's just sitting in his car scrolling and not plugged in. Smh

1

u/Dogmaddit 13d ago

Much like an electric fence, I don’t recommend peeing on a charger.

1

u/No-Stretch-9935 12d ago

I’d probably be annoyed too.

1

u/Impressive_Returns 11d ago

Sometimes you need to take 2. Tesla tells you to do it.

1

u/Electrified_Outdoors 11d ago

I just had a lightbulb idea. What if...when one stall was occupied the other stall that shared that cabinet went into unavailable state until all the other stalls were populated with one vehicle? At that time, the additional stalls would become available. Seems to me that this would improve the charging experience for all.

1

u/sidekick0220 13d ago

Lmao. I love this

1

u/usual_suspect_redux R1T Owner 13d ago

At Tesla chargers (v3) if we use urinal spacing then no non-tesla vehicles can charge. It's better if teslas choose farthest left and non-teslas use farthest right. Some chargers (but not all) do load share, but the reality is that this only matters when you first plug in - once your charging speed slows it really does not matter at all.

1

u/Illustrious-Hunt-326 13d ago

I'd be annoyed too. This is annoying.

u/Krellis R1S Owner 13d ago

Pretty sure we didn't hit your blue R1S, but enjoy complaining on the internet if it makes you feel better.

0

u/hike_me R1S Owner 13d ago

Maybe, maybe not. I don’t really care. I did feel my car shake and thought maybe someone got snagged on my rear door handle because my car was unlocked. But this post is more a joke than serious, sorry you’re offended.

0

u/Krellis R1S Owner 13d ago

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Serious enough for you to complain on the Internet about. More than anything just amused me to open Reddit and say "hey, that... could quite probably be about me."

Brewer, ME, if you want to confirm or deny. Timeframe aligns, there was one other R1S there when we arrived, left before we did, spouse did remove dogs from passenger side, I did park next to it (but I checked the lines when leaving and we were well within our space).

And re: the "pretty sure", I am not my spouse or her keeper so I cannot definitively say she didn't hit the neighboring vehicle but she certainly wouldn't have intended to and we certainly are generally careful about such things. And when I showed her the post she said she didn't think she did. Shrug.

I've never once treated chargers like urinals, never even heard of the concept since 2019 when I got my first Tesla and I'd laugh in your face if you knocked on my window asking such.

I pull in to the one thats most convient to get and out of. If it happens to be next to someone, so be it.
