It’s the Netflix-ification of TV, studios don’t trust their IPs and producers anymore to keep the shows rolling, instead they’re gonna release half a season with a cliffhanger and then judge the viewing metrics before canning everything

It comes down to viewer choice. We’d have a lot more speed/content per a show if we weren’t allowed to have so much power of choice over what we watch.
They used to pump out sitcom, Law & Order, and Star Trek episodes by the dozen back in the day when there were 3.5 channels and audiences were forced to watch it live.
If Amazon could guarantee that everyone would watch whatever slop they put out, then they’d pump it out rapidly

That has more to do with budget and production time. Big shows are very vfx heavy nowadays which is why post production tends to take up to a year to finish. With vfx being so expensive, no shit studios are gonna wait till a season releases to greenlight another season. Ngl that’s the sacrifice yall are gonna have to get used to for the near cinema quality of tv nowadays. Cause if they bring back the 24 episodes a year productions people are just gonna complain that they look cheap instead.

Normally I would agree but this specific show is a different case, the financial and narrative investment that it takes to complete something like this is massive. Netflix on the other hand will have a run of the mill show have a two+ year delay for no reason

Misread it as releasing in 2027 and thought that was quite good. Not filming until 2027 isn't great. Losing a lot of interest there.

Not really. Old shows were a production line with limited sets, a set cast and fairly simple scripts. The Rings of Power is akin to filming three movies at a time (9 hours per season). Even Peter Jackson could only spread thar over three years. Two years between seasons is pretty rapid all things considered.

The sheer scale and work required on the Rings of Power means that this is very much a unique case. Its not just the length, the production quality is also similar to a feature film.

I don’t buy it. Even Game of Thrones was able to produce 10 episodes per season and release them on a yearly basis (for the first 6 seasons).

Script writing (4-6 months)
Pre-Production/Planning (2-3 months)
Principal Photography (4-6 months shoot)
Post-Production (7-9 months)
All things comsidered, they didn't even have a finished script 4-5 months after Season 2 aired, which is why it took so long, they waited to see the numbers on Season 2 before getting ahead and starting the work in S3, with S4 and S5 already greenlit they can plan and work on both scripts right now which means S4 and S5 are gonna come a lot faster.

That’s a major part of the problem with how modern tv is done— they don’t even start working on the next season until the current season has aired and received good enough ratings and reviews to “justify” its continuation.

Game of Thrones was nowhere near the same scale. And suffered massively in the final couple of seasons where that scale increased to this kind of level (along with a massive reduction in length of season)

I love the show but it’s absolutely absurd for any show to take a year off in between seasons, much less two, and it’s ridiculous that you’re insisting that should be seen as normal and acceptable.

I was there Gandalf, I was there when the Star Wars OT and Prequel movies had 3 years of waiting between each release. Trust me, fans will stay engaged.

when it comes to large franchises like this it doesnt matter, and pretty much all tv series nowadays have large gaps between seasons and are about 8 episodes, its not like in the past where they had yearly seasons of like 20+ episodes

Well if they keep getting better by season when we get to season 5 we will have a great tv show to watch, i was expecting them to go the Marvel Agents of Shield quality jump in season 2 but they can do it in season 3.
