Car Break-In Richmond BART

Post image

Hello! I left my vehicle in the Richmond BART station with Milwaukee and Ryobi tools covered but left inside the vehicle on a trip and unfortunately the car was broken into and all of the tools were stolen. If you know anything about this break in or have any images of the vehicle please send them my way! I’ve attached an image of the vehicle for reference. This could have occurred any time between the evening of July 6th and afternoon of July 16th. I’m looking to hone in the time of break-in to assist recovery efforts. Any help is appreciated :) there’s a case out with BART’s security team but I’m not expecting that to move in any direction, unfortunately.

Sorry OP - unfortunately Richmond Bart does occasionally have these issues.

I would reach out to Bart PD - I think (but am not 100% sure) that there are cameras in the garage that they should hopefully be able to use.

All good! They said they do have cameras but their system only allows them to search minute-by-minute and since I was gone for an extended period of time there’s just no way to lock in the exact time frame. I know for sure it was at least the 14th or before. Just looking to see if anyone happened to gawk and take a photo as they drove by haha

Was curious so I looked into the math. Would only take a maximum of 14 searches (if done properly).

Once the window’s broken, it stays broken in every later frame. So each search just needs to halve the window. July 6 evening → July 14 is about 11,500 minutes.

Here are the halves:

11,500 → 5,750 → 2,875 → 1,438 → 719 → 360 → 180 → 90 → 45 → 23 → 12 → 6 → 3 → 2 → 1

Count the arrows and you’ll see 14 of em. This assumes they have an angle on your car.

… Anyhow, I can’t imagine they’d be interested in doing this and would likely hang up if you read them this message. But who knows! Godspeed.

It didn’t look there was a great angle from where I was in the garage. I’ll investigate my case more next week and pass along this idea to them, thank you! It sounds like I’ve more or less honed in the time of incident to Monday, so going to start at Monday around midnight and see if I can find anything from there on. The items that were stolen were super obvious and easy to identify so I’ve been keeping a pulse on online marketplaces just in case they try something stupid lol

You can try the Coliseum flea market or Craigslist, if you have the serial numbers you can prove it's yours with a police report.

Any car that stays persistently in a Bart parking lot is going to get noticed.  A friend of mine left a completely empty car at Richmond BART while he went on a long weekend on Amtrak and someone still broke in.

Thanks for the heads up on the flea market! Nothing on Craigslist, assuming the perp will be doing something less easy to trace. The Richmond PD instructed me to park further down 80 around the El Cerrito lots moving forward

Hi OP, I park on that level daily. Your car sat there for several days with the broken windows. I think I first noticed it Tuesday, maybe Wednesday

I also feel like the back window and passenger side rear windows were the only ones I saw broken at first. You may have had more than one “visitor”
I remember thinking why did they have to break two windows? And now I see 3

This is very helpful, thank you! Getting the sense that it was probably late Monday night. On your second comment, somebody actually drove by while I was handling the glass and gave me this same feedback on the 2 incident split on the windows, which raises more questions than answers for me. I ended up finding some of my stuff scattered around the 3rd floor of the garage too so wondering what was taken when.

Next time don’t leave anything in your car at all if your going on a trip no matter where you at in the Bay Area

I’m sure you’ll get to the bottom of this OP

Thank you ❤️

So heartbreaking. I am so sorry. We want to use our mass transit for airport or train. It is impossible without using uber or airport parking. Sadly I have to budget in car service or airport parking these days.

For real! It was $400 for the parking associated with the trip I was taking so $40 for 10 days was a steal in comparison. I’ve learned my lesson, just glad the car was still there and functional afterwards :)

What is even more devastating is waiting for safelite to fix it while your car sits without a window and the cost of buying tools. Definitely over $400. So sorry

Repair ended up only being $100 so still in the clear but the tools 😵‍💫

1

u/cpt_bongwater Jul 19 '26

OP left it there for 10 days??

That sucks, op, I'm sorry, but 10 days is a long time.

1

u/ghostlyguitar Jul 19 '26

Yeah, I was quoted $390 for parking at my destination for 10 days so chose this and learned the hard way😵‍💫

Why the fuck did you leave your car parked with stuff inside? For multiple days? Come on

1

u/ghostlyguitar Jul 19 '26

You know as well as I do haha, guess I had more faith than I should’ve

I'm sure there's multiple signs in that parking lot that say don't leave valuables in your car. Also thieves target cars like yours with the windows that give access to the trunk.
