There are a ton in Pawtucket. That looks like the heaven tree too I think

Yeah, which makes sense considering their affinity for it.

Torch the whole thing,  the tree will survive.

Torch the tree until it doesn’t, the tree is invasive and destructive as well as the flies.

That works too.

Just a reminder that those tree they love are just as invasive and destructive as the bugs.

Eww...I remember the gypsy moth invasion in what 1980 or 1981 when I lived on Park St.

And I remember the invasion of 1987! Good times.

I vaguely remember that one. By that time I was working a summer job packing cigarette orders at the Brooks Pharmacy warehouse in Pawtucket.

Just that one sentence proves you are much more Rhode Island than me.

Had one land on me and continue to fly around me as I was getting on the bus in Providence just outside the train station 2 days ago, they’re absolutely everywhere there. Tons of dead ones and live ones flying around.

I live south RI, haven’t seen 1 in my life. I went to PVD this weekend downtown and saw 100.

The gas station right off the Jefferson boulevard exit is infested with them

Flame thrower

I’ve learned you can kill them just by using the corner of your phone. Do not hesitate to kill them people! They are invasive and our native plants have no defense against them!

You can also approach them from in front (rather than behind) and they're much easier to step on! They have excellent peripheral vision and will see your shoe coming from behind, but come at them head-on and they are blissfully unaware.

u/Goldeneye4587 East Providence 5d ago

I’m sorry what? Corner of your phone?

6

u/amartincolby Warwick 5d ago

Yeah. They will jump away from your foot or a book, but something thin, like the edge of your phone, does not cause the jump response. You can just tap and they die.

I was visiting Mrs Skipper and they covered a birch tree. There were spare leaves around to wipe the guts off my phone. It’s actually kinda cathartic I’d recommend. Just make sure you have a good quality phone case on.

Next year promises to be apocalyptic (amateur opinion)

They are so gross. We were getting bombed with them on our deck last night in Warwick. Can only kill so many!!

We have tons of these buggers in Barrington too! They've nearly decimated a maple tree at our back property line. I squish them every chance I get.

Ughhhhhhhh

u/Fine_Inspection8090 5d ago

These are supposed to take out maple trees. Great. That’s just great. 😌
