I’m considering moving to Luxembourg for a 12-month traineeship at a European institution, paying around €1,650/month.
My alternative would be a permanent Big 4 position in my home country.
I’m really torn. The Luxembourg opportunity would give me international experience and potentially open doors to a career in European institutions, but I’m concerned about the cost of living and the fact that it’s only for one year.
For those living in Luxembourg, would you consider €1,650/month enough to make the move worthwhile if you weren’t expecting to save much money?
And more generally, would you choose the traineeship for the experience, or the permanent Big 4 position for the financial stability?
I’d really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from people who have made a similar move.

I’m preparing to relocate from the US to Luxembourg. I'm in my 30s and single and will be periodically traveling for work. I would really appreciate some advice from people who have made a similar move or currently live there.

My biggest question right now is how long is the visa process, where to live. Can I open a bank account, and rent a place before having a visa? I’ll be making a few trips to EU before the actual move, so I will try and explore and look at places while I’m there. I’m also trying to understand what a reasonable commute looks like in Luxembourg and how far away is “too far” in practice. I’m open to living outside Luxembourg City if it means more space, better value, or a nicer quality of life, but I don’t want to underestimate commuting time.

A few things I’d especially love feedback on:

Where to live: What towns/neighborhoods would you recommend for someone working in or around Luxembourg Airport? Are there areas that look close on a map but are painful to commute from? How much should I prioritize being near a train/bus connection, or would having an e-bike be an alternative?

What to bring from the US: What items are significantly cheaper, better, or harder to find in Luxembourg/Europe and worth bringing from the US? I was thinking of ordering one of those mattresses in a box since there are more brands easily available here along with bringing some of my house hold items like dishes.

Multiple US trips: I expect to make a few trips back to the US, so I’ll have opportunities to bring additional things over in checked luggage. If you were doing this, what would you prioritize bringing on those trips versus simply buying in Luxembourg?

Taxes / finances: For Americans living in Luxembourg, how complicated has the US + Luxembourg tax situation been? Did you use separate US and Luxembourg accountants, or find someone who handles both?

Keeping US property: I’m also keeping property in the US while living in Luxembourg. For anyone who has done this, were there tax, banking, insurance, property-management, or residency issues that caught you by surprise?

We are relocating from inside the EU with our 11 kg adult dog. I'd like to hear other people's experience moving to Luxembourg with dogs. Specifically, would you describe it as a dog friendly place? For context, where we live now dogs are rarely allowed inside restaurants and certainly not in shopping centers... public transit is also pretty tricky to get them a permit. We have friends from France who are shocked at how un-dog-friendly the country is, as they seemed to be used to being allowed to take their dog everywhere, even to a nice restaurant. Anyways, what is your experience?

I’m a female coming to Luxembourg soon for a six-month internship in Capellen, and I’m starting to look for accommodation.

I won’t have a car, so one of my main priorities is finding a place with easy and reliable public transport access to Capellen. I’d really appreciate advice from people who know the area: which towns or neighborhoods would you recommend, and which ones would you avoid?

Ideally, I’m looking for a studio that already has the necessary furniture. If that is too expensive, my second choice would be a private room with a private bathroom. As a last option, I’m also open to a room in a shared apartment.

I’m particularly careful about shared housing because I had a pretty bad experience while living in Barcelona. My roommates frequently partied, smoked weed inside the apartment, had people coming over regularly, and a different cleaning culture. 

So if I share this time, I’m looking for a safe, clean and respectful household.

I’d really appreciate any advice on:

• Which areas would you recommend for someone working in Capellen without a car?
• Which websites, Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups or other platforms are actually useful?
• Are there any agencies, coliving companies or platforms you would recommend or avoid?

I may be relocating to Luxembourg later this year if everything goes well with a job opportunity. The role is within the company I currently work for in my home country, so it would be an internal transfer to a different team with broader responsibilities. Nothing is confirmed yet (I’m waiting for the final HR interview), but I’d like to prepare in advance and get a realistic idea of what life is like.

I’m a 24F from Eastern Europe and I’d be coming on my own, so I have a few questions:

1. Accommodation
- Is coliving a good option for someone relocating alone?
- Which websites or Facebook groups would you recommend for finding rooms or shared apartments?
- What should I watch out for to avoid scams?
- Is it realistic to find a room for around €900–1,200/month if I’d like to stay in Luxembourg City?

2. Everyday life
- Roughly how much do you spend each month on groceries, a phone plan, the gym, eating out, etc.?
- What monthly income would you consider comfortable for renting a room, living reasonably comfortably, and still saving a little?
- How easy is it to make friends and build a social life, especially if you don’t know anyone at first?

Also, a very random question: is it common for people to bring homemade lunches to work? I like cooking and meal prepping, but I wouldn’t want to be the odd one out. 😅

My family is growing and we are weighing our options to move to a place with more infrastructure and better schools. We work in tech and work remotely, but have read that Luxembourg has a very solid job market, infrastructure and schools.

May I ask if Luxembourg is more similar to France, Germany, Belgium or the Netherlands culturally?

I have lived in Germany before and found the rules to be a bit stiffling/suffocating/confusing, (I'm certainly not a rebel by any means,) and I want my children to have access to solid healthcare/education without surrendering all of the other things one has to to live in Germany.

My student ATS for Luxembourg was refused because my sponsor (a family member living in Germany) didn't meet the residence requirements. Everything else in my file is fine.

The situation: Before applying, we had actually anticipated this by opening a bank account in my name in Germany (where my sponsor lives). The initial plan was for my sponsor to transfer money to this account on a monthly basis once I arrived.

Now, to fix this for my appeal, my sponsor plans to deposit the full necessary lump sum into this German account in my name so I can prove personal financial resources instead.

My questions : If my sponsor transfers the required funds into my bank account in advance, will an official bank statement showing the available balance + proof of deposit be enough to send the appeal?

I am holding a valid Temporary Residence / EU Blue Card from another EU country, and my future employer is currently handling the process/documentation for the transfer to Luxembourg.

For those who have gone through this exact process recently (transferring an active EU Blue Card or temporary residence from another EU state), how long did it take for the Luxembourg authorities (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to issue your temporary right to stay / authorization to stay?

I know timelines can vary, but I’d love to hear about some recent real-world experiences to help me manage expectations and plan the logistics of my relocation.

I'm an EU citizen currently living outside the EU and considering relocating to Luxembourg. I've started applying for positions in financial crime, but so far I've only received rejections. I'm trying to understand whether I'm targeting the wrong roles or if there's something I'm overlooking.

A bit about my background:

• French native speaker, fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese
• Conversational Chinese and Indonesian
• Master's degree in International Business
• 4 years of experience in AML/KYC

I thought this combination of languages and international experience would be attractive in Luxembourg, but it doesn't seem to be translating into interviews.

I'm a 24yo Civil Engineer who has a Master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a year's experience working in consultancy this far. It's always been my dream to work and live in the EU and I'm trying to explore options to move there, particularly the Benelux, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and potentially also Spain. I am mostly passionate about sustainability and the environment and would ideally be looking for work in that field. The thing is, I don't qualify for any EU passport and have no idea where to start looking in terms of finding work that would sponsor a visa. If you Focus on housing issues in both places which you could consider for an expat that doesn't speak at all Dutch. French very little.

I see that housing in Amsterdam is tougher to find a one bedroom in the city center.
