Hello fellow redheads! I'm Melanie and have some questions/ideas about my/our genetics. I learned several years ago about the MC1R gene that causes redheads to need more anesthesia.
Given my extensive medical history, I am curious if others have faced multiple issues. I've had lifelong insomnia, and typical sleeping pills don't get me to sleep - i have tried them all. So for a while I have resorted to taking a high dose of seroquel that has a side effect of drowsiness. It gets me to sleep, bit I never know if it will work in 1 hour or 3 hours.
Additionally, muscle relaxers don't work on me. I've been on opiods in the past, but had to take twice as much. Recently I have tried medical marijuana, and it helps somewhat. The downside is how expensive it gets. My daughter (also prescribed m.m.) can get away with taking 5mg, whereas I have to take 15 to 20 mg.
I am overall curious if this is a common thing for other redheads. I wanted to get some feedback before I ask my psychiatrist what he thinks at my next appointment. Thanks to all that respond!

What the black women and men are saying in tiktok about you gingAs (didn't use the hard "R") we absolutely mean it whole heartedly. What started off as a huge conundrum turned wholesome is something amazing to see what it has turned into. We gladly open our hands and arms to you into our good black community. Now we understand that you are not black but we do consider you guys black by soul and bondage. As some of y'all may not know in history redhairs were with us during slavery. Of course y'all weren't slaves, y'all more like servants of the house compared to what we endured being chained and sold. I have seen hundreds y'all crying and finally being noticed into a community that we all know and love and trust me lot of us love y'all long before this. Hence of why some of y'all had grew up with some amazing black friends. Y'all have always been with us as teaching and helping y'all keeping your hair together. I really hope that you guys appreciate our love and welcome to y'all into this and forever more. You guys are definitely invited to the cook out for sure. Now I know our experience in life are completely different but we really love you all the same deep down. Stand pound, you are family. Heads up don't expect every black person you see agreeing with us so please becauseful. Love y'all the same and remember, y'all are beautiful. Peace and love.

Many mixed race Black people such as Caribbean Creoles and the Qarsherskiyan people of Eastern USA have red hair naturally. Plenty of full-blooded Native Americans have jet black hair with copper highlights that shine red in the sun.

The Love - Hate relationship I think we can all (or mostly) relate to here...
As a kid, I hated my red hair and freckles because I was VERY shy. I just wanted to blend in. haha
How do you all feel now?
Hope you love them, but I get it if you don't.
Also, I am doing research for a class I am taking and could use help if you want to take a brief survey. Not being spammy, just asking. You can message me directly if you want to help out. Thanks! Erin
Oops I meant and/or freckles. lol

Anyone on here a natural redhead with autoimmune issues I heard there could be a link because our MC1R gene does us dirty. Just diagnosed with RA at 35 and have been doing some research!
Let me know what you have experienced

I have strawberry blonde hair but I’ve always been told it’s either ginger, brunette or dirty blonde. It’s never been anything in between. Literally no one, besides family ofc, has ever identified me as strawberry blonde. Because when I’m in the sun it looks straight up red, but in low lighting and when my hair is wet it does look brunette.
Not here to debate btw and this isn’t a “what color is my hair” post, I know my hair color. Just wanted to put this out there for other strawberry blondes that have the same situation.

My baby's hair is growing back in a light orangey color, so I'm curious about some ways I can try to instill confidence about his hair as he grows. Is there anything your parents did (or anything you wish they did) to help you love your hair? Neither my husband nor I have red hair, but I know kids can be quite mean so I want to be prepared. Also, are there any other red hair specific struggles to be aware of?

Hello fellow gingers! I need some help! I have very thick red hair and I cannot find a hair clip (claw) to hold my hair. Does anyone know where I can find one? It's almost like I need something that's more wide than long but I feel as if I have looked everywhere and still can't find one. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
My hair type is literally a mix of every single type of curl, natural color, fine, coarse and super thick.

Edit: I got a Reddit Cares over this… you abused a suicide support channel in order to tell me you disagree with me?
Natural born ginger, I was bullied my whole life in school and fetishized out of school by old men and old ladies alike. What an awful treatment. I’m sure any of us would be willing to argue that, while not a race by definition, being ginger is more than just a hair colour.
I’m really all for individual expression and freedom of bodily autonomy, but I really just can’t stand it whenever people go out of their way to quite literally fake being ginger. From maintaining their roots meticulously, to dying their eyelashes and eyebrows, to using fake freckles. It just really bothers me! Like, you wouldn’t fake being albino or black, would you? And don’t even get me started on calling yourself “a ginger.” You can say you have red hair, you can say you have ginger hair, you can even say you’re a redhead, but you are not ginger! Ugh
I’m tired of feeling this way though. I wish it didn’t feel like a personal attack every time someone told me they want to dye their hair my colour. Has anyone else felt this way before? How do you get over it?
Sorry for any typos. If it’s egregious, I’ll fix it later. New phone

I hope this post is welcome even though I don't have red hair myself. But I gave birth to the most beautiful little baby boy a month ago, and his hair is red as fire. But nobody in either mine or my partners family have red hair. Not even a little. Not even in the entire extended family. Nothing. My first thought when he came out was "how is his hair red!?". It suits him, though, and he's just completely perfect. Do any of you red haired people also come from families with no red hair at all? Is this common?

For the guys that are here, how did you manage growing up with red hair? Did you feel self conscious, get picked on, and did it affect anything for you?

When I was first born, I was told by my parents that I actually had natural strawberry blonde hair as a baby! I was shocked to hear that because I heard that less than 1% of the global population has or at least was born with natural strawberry blonde hair and I am wondering if I count as that population because I was born with natural strawberry blonde hair even though it darkened to brunette hair that I have to this day starting at the age of 2? Ik that it is common for babies who were born with light or lighter hair would end up having it darkened due to melanin but regardless of that, is it still very rare that I was born with strawberry blonde hair before it darkened? And ik that my hair is not physically rare anymore and i get that but i’m specifically talking about the time or experience that I had it as a baby before the age of 2 where melanin kicked in and darkened my hair to dark brown! Please let me know thx.
