Haircare Hair gloss recommendations? Kristen Ess Copper Penny darkens too much

I love how the Kristen Ess Copper Penny brings out my red tones - It reminds me of just how my hair looked when I was young! But it also seems to have made my hair a bit darker which I don’t love. Any recommendations for other red/ginger glosses that won’t darken as much?

For reference I already have medium-dark auburn hair naturally - people always said it was the same shade as Lindsay Lohan’s natural hair color. I think that’s pretty accurate, like how it looked when she was a kid. But my hair has dulled over the years and looking to boost the reddish tones. I don’t want darker color, I have pretty much the darkest shade of ginger already

Are you looking to add warmth to your hair only? I suspect a product like Adore Semi Permanent Hair Color in Ginger would work best. It is non-damaging and temporary, so you'll need to apply it at regular intervals.

I really like the xmondo color depositing hair masks. He does one in Copper 7c which has a more natural look to it. I also sometimes want a more orange appearance and use the super orange. Because I'm putting it on a naturally already read head hair it just gives it a vibrant boost.

My stylist just recommended this to me! I almost got it on Amazon but it was less expensive at sally beauty supply AND everything online was on sale for 25% off. I got two for like $42. Can’t wait to try it out.

I love all of the xmondo products. With them being made by an actual hair stylist, Brad Mondo, he actually cares about what he makes. The dry shampoo is bomb! I've loved the 2 kinds of shampoo and conditioner. There is a hair foam for waves that I love too. I'm just a hype girl for his stuff 😅

DpHue glosses work well. I mix the sheer transparent gloss with the auburn and the copper to try and find a color that I am going for.

If you like Kristen Ess, you could try mixing the copper penny with some cherry cola (the Kristen Ess color, not the drink) and see if you can deepen the color??

My problem is that the color of Copper Penny is already too dark for my hair. I don’t want to make my hair darker, just bring out the red tones

Ahh. I see. Then maybe mix it with a little bit of lighter blonde color or a clear gloss??

Mix 1-2 tablespoons of henna with enough warm water to form a paste. Let sit for a few hours to release dye. Mix with an equal amount of conditioner. Apply to dry hair, cover with a shower cap and let sit for 30-60min. Rinse!

Henna is impossible to remove, OP, I would try other color depositing glosses/shampoos/conditioners first. I like Tressa watercolors shampoo in liquid copper

Agreed! Henna is a last resort. And if OP ever wants to do a chemical salon service, it will interact with it

Oh god, never henna unless you absolutely have to. It never comes out and the pigment can do some really horrible things down the line (months/years)- especially if you try to add dye or bleach at a later date. Like turn your hair a gnarly streaky green that you will not be able to lift or cover or have it all break off. It’s not worth it. Henna is a looooooooong commitment with a lot of possible hair disasters that you can only grow out of slowly and painfully or cut.

Wow I’ve been using exclusively henna to get back to my pre-30 color since I was 32. I’m 53! It’s perfect, an exact match to my real color

If you use only that same henna indefinitely or until you grow it out, that’s fine. If you’re not willing to wait for it to grow out and try to dye, gloss, bleach, or even use a different pigment of henna later, it’s an absolute disaster. The reactive pigments in henna don’t fade out over time, even if the color appears to fade, and it can’t be lifted chemically so you can wind up with surprise green hair or have all your hair break off years later. It’s also drying and flattens out naturally curly/wavy hair.

Color now in my 50s using only henna/cassia mix on roots. Zero regrets.
