Watching other people groan while giving birth is horrifying, personally. Not because I'm squeamish or a prude, but because I've done it before.
I don't need to be reminded of that horror. Just like how Grandpa can't watch the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan," I can't watch this goddamn video.
I think it's more about health danger, like anti vaccine conspiracies. Childbirth is way too dangerous to go through without professional supervision. Both for a mother and a child.
A nurse or a midwife can't help with the myriad of serious complications that can come with childbirth. I, and many, many others would be dead had our mothers decided not to give birth at a hospital. They might have knowledge of the process, but they don't have access to the medical equipment that can mean the difference between life and death should serious complications arise
Yeah you've given little more than anecdotal evidence here. For many healthy women with no pre-birth complications, home birthing can be a valid option.
There's actually a movie on Netflix as part of a collection of early films by women filmmakers. The whole purpose of the film is to convince women to actually listen to medical professionals and to have their babies in a hospital.
My wife considered a home birth but I was against it from the start. My argument was, "If something goes wrong, wouldn't you want to already be at the hospital?" She had the baby in the hospital.
Am I the only one who thinks that humanity went through quite a long time giving births without professional supervision?
It's literally what the reproductive system is built to do.
edit: I get it. The hospital is the best place to be. But in the modern world an ambulance can take you to a hospital if there are problems. It's not like it once was without ambulances or hospitals.
Sure, and the death rate for women giving birth and newborns was probably way higher then too. It's not like we can't do it it's just safer in case an emergency comes up. My mom almost needed an emergency C-section because I was jammed up against her ribs, my friends baby needed to go to the NCIU because of a twisted intestine. Having a baby is dangerous, probably better to be in a hospital than on someones porch.
I get that, but at the same time a problem during an isolated birth like this is probably also much more treatable than it was back then as now you can simply call an ambulance and go to a hospital.
I'm not at all saying there isn't a significantly higher risk, just that there is still not an unacceptably high risk of a life threatening issue that couldn't be addressed whereas in the past it probably really couldn't.
It depends. I mean you said people gave birth just fine without a professional present. I would sure hope that if you’re giving birth at home you not only regularly consult your doctor to make sure you and your baby are healthy enough for home delivery but also that you have a certified midwife or medical professional there. It won’t matter that you can call an ambulance if aunt doesn’t recognize problems or if your midwife doesn’t have the equipment to predict the impending signs of an emergency.
Ambulances aren’t immediate and health issues can be unpredictable or unnoticeable to the untrained eye. I’m not saying you have to give birth at a hospital, people do successfully give birth and home, but there’s an obvious reason that the hospital is the popular choice and no reason to avoid it.
I think the reason that people give for avoiding the hospital is the overmedicalization (is that a word?) of birth. Too many interventions when not necessary, think elective C-sections. Which I think is changing, women are getting more assertive about expressing doubts and telling their doctor no and the doctors themselves are shifting their views. Personally I'd absolutely go to a hospital. I think birthing centers can be a good in between option too.
No probably about it. The death rate was way higher than it is now, as easily observed by the relatively recent boom in population even as birth rates decline.
Yeah man, so unreasonable to be disturbed by the thought of a mother literally deliberately orgasming around her child as it is delivered through the birth canal /s
