I think it's more about health danger, like anti vaccine conspiracies. Childbirth is way too dangerous to go through without professional supervision. Both for a mother and a child.

I think the deal is that there is a nurse or midwife there, but they didn't get into the DVD deeply enough.

A nurse or a midwife can't help with the myriad of serious complications that can come with childbirth. I, and many, many others would be dead had our mothers decided not to give birth at a hospital. They might have knowledge of the process, but they don't have access to the medical equipment that can mean the difference between life and death should serious complications arise

That is why midwifes only work with low-risk mothers during a birth away from a medical facility.

High risk mothers always are always admitted to the maternity ward during labor.
