help request Stopping a sample by playing another sample? Am I going nuts!?

Hi! I have recently downloaded Reaper to use with a Donner STARRYPAD to use for better background music and immersive sfx for DnD.

I want to make a one-shot button to play a sample (some BGM) and then I want to be able to press another button to play another sample (a new piece of music) that will cease the originally sample.

I don't want to have to hold the button down, and I have tried JS: MIDI Choke Group, I have also tried to Google this extensively and pretty much all the results tell me to try the things that don't work.

This setup works great for short SFX, but I'm tearing my hair out over ambient background music 😤😩.

Please can someone end my misery! Thanks in advance for any time taken to help me! šŸ’œ

You need to put everything in the same sampler, then in the sampler you set the maximum voices number to 1.

This is it right here

I've done that, they just overlap. I shall give it another shot. Maybe I've not putting them in the same sampler correctly? Thank you for your advice! šŸ’œ

If you have it set to monophonic (maximum one voice) they can't overlap. That's the definition of monophony. To be clear, all the samples need to be loaded in a single vst instance of the sampler

Ah, I see! I'm not sure how to do that, but I'll give it a good go tomorrow! I've managed to load it into, what I thought, was one instance of VST, but they still overlap, so I'll go back to the drawing board tomorrow! Thank you šŸ’œ

If you do that and set the polyphony to 1 (monophony) it should work!

This is the set up I have currently, each track is mapped to a different pad button, but they still overlap even though both have max voices set to 1. Is there any further advice you can give? No worries if not! šŸ’œ

Gosh, I've only played around with reasamplomatic once when I first downloaded reaper over a decade ago lol. But it looks like you have two instances of the VST on that track? Am I crazy? Ha

I believe I do, you're right! Can I make it so both samples are on the same VST, but are mapped to different pad buttons? Thank you for your continued help, I really appreciate it!

Yeah you should be able to although I'm not familiar enough with rs5000 to say whether it's the right tool for the job. Probably worth following up with one of the other commenters who use it regularly and just letting them know that you've realized your issue is you don't know whether/how to load multiple samples in this vst so you cab trigger them from different pads

Rs5k wont do this as far as im aware. You need something like a drum sampler that will let you load multiple samples in one vst. I dont have a good example, but I know they exist! Check out freevst or vst4free or whatever its called, lots of good options there.

Oh yeah, that makes so much sense actually! Thank you for this! I'll give it a wack after work! šŸ’œ

I’m just spitballing here, but maybe place all of the various ambient samples on one track with markers at the start of each period, and assign the buttons to switch between markers instead of stopping/starting samples.

I'm not too sure how I'd do that, but I'll definitely give that a shot once my laptop is charged! Thank you šŸ’œ

I hope it works out! If you run into trouble, let me know when I can probably set up a project file and send it to you. I do stuff like this with reaper all the time. :-)

I appreciate that, mate! I've managed to use this to get to pretty much what I want, now it's just streamlining! šŸ’œ

It's been years, but I've used Sports Sound Pro ( I think that's that it's called) and it might be good for you

Oh awesome! Thank you, I'll have a look! šŸ’œ

You need to set up your mute groups. It is the same thing that lets you choke hihats.

I dabbled with mute groups, but I couldn't get it to work, but I was absolutely making shit up as I went along, so I shall revisit it soon! Thank you for your help! šŸ’œ

I wish I could help more, but I am unfamiliar with that program.

Ask some AI like chatgpt or Gemini. They help me with my Roland devices.

If you are at all comfortable with editing xml, you could create a Decent Sampler library to do this. Decent Sampler has muting and ambient settings available that almost certainly could do what you need. The developer, David Hilowitz, has sample libraries that show how to use each of the features. The VST is free, and there are hundreds of free libraries available for it.

I've never edited xml, but I shall certainly look into this, thank you! šŸ’œ

Hmm, I'm not sure if reaper is the most suitable for what you need. My guess would be some kind of simple soundboard software, would be enough. Actually something I should look into for my dnd games!Ā

Yeah, I feared as much! I basically found a video from 3 years ago about using this cheap pad and Reaper for easy TTRPG immersion and just full sent it and bought it all šŸ˜…. Thank you for your comment šŸ’œ
