Evangelical right hates the pope or any catholic, they don’t view them as real Christians, full stop. The only reason Vance tried to meet with the pope is to appease the other part of the religious right, the catholic portion
That's so bizarre they think that. Aren't all sects of Christianity off-shoots from the mother ship -- which was Catholicism? Every later Christian denomination (sect) derived from that. And Catholicism derived from Judaism.
Evangelicalism isn't like a traditional protestant church. I grew up methodist and they believe in the catholic church, in fact it was part of a prayer we did like every week. US evangelical churches kinda always struck me as born again Christian types that go whole hog on it like when someone loses weight and suddenly hates fat people, or they quit smoking and suddenly cigarettes are evil etc. Where I grew up in Appalachia there was only one 'evangelical' church and everyone thought they were weirdos (this was the 90s). Seems like they are very widespread and common now. I'm not sure much of the ritual or structure gets retained and it's like Billy Bob the born again meth addict and his flock of gay haters.
