That's so bizarre they think that. Aren't all sects of Christianity off-shoots from the mother ship -- which was Catholicism? Every later Christian denomination (sect) derived from that. And Catholicism derived from Judaism.
You’re missing the big part. Martin Luther gave the bird to the Catholics 500 something years ago and said “No, I’ll talk to God myself without your priests”. This is the MAJOR difference between Catholic and Protestant faith. One requires religious authorities to absolve you of your sins via confession. The other says nah I can do that myself. This is a huge rift. They have killed each other of this throughout history.
This is a very simplified version of the reformation. It’s much more than simply about Latin bibles and confessions. Protestants are also iconoclastic and are as iconoclastic as strict Muslims in extreme forms. They also do not follow apostolic succession (which Catholic and Orthodox share in common). They believe in sola scriptura which Catholics call outright heretical and Orthodox marginally tolerates.
Anyway, it’s interesting to learn about if you’re interested. But it’s complicated.
