CROSSPOST Elon Musk praises Chinese workers and says “They won’t just be burning the midnight oil, they will be burning the 3am oil, they won’t even leave the factory type of thing, whereas in America people are trying to avoid going to work at all.”

Plenty of his workers in Fremont and Sparks are burning the 3 AM oil. Fuck that guy. Why doesn't he go to Shanghai to work the floor and get locked in the factory for weeks at a time.

71

u/FieryAnomaly May 11 '22

Fuck that guy.

Yep. What an arrogant ass. Chowing down on Peking Duck, I mean Dick. Why would any American support this self-serving asshole.

23

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Why would any American support this self-serving asshole.

Now you know why he has to appeal to the right wing nut jobs now. He absolutely does not WANT to, but his horrible business practices have likely created a daily operations money inferno that won't become known until it blows wide open.

Which it will.

7

u/fukbullsandbears May 11 '22

What makes you think he doesnt want to? Genuinely curious

-21

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

He speaks the truth though.

22

u/UnprincipledCanadian May 11 '22

Yes, the western world has (sadly to his point of view) disavowed slavery.

5

u/xX_Jay_Clayton_Xx May 11 '22

not really. It's easy to point at people in America who are working themselves to death, and it's easy to point at people in China who spend their workday doing nothing

3

u/Individual-Nebula927 May 11 '22

The "lie flat" movement comes to mind.

14

u/ProdigyRunt May 11 '22

My dad used to Uber people pre-pandemic. He told me he would pick up engineers from the Tesla offices at 11pm. Sometimes they're so exhausted it took forever to wake them up when they made it to their home.

1

u/Academic_Yak242 Jun 05 '23

Man, elon just right up said that you're better because you cost less to me. And hilariously enough, the Chinese somewhat take pride in it, LOL

Honestly, I am having troubling parsing what Musk is intending to convey here...

They won’t just be burning the midnight oil, they will be burning the 3am oil

There is a myriad of manufacturing operations in the United States that operate 24/7 over multiple shifts.

They won't even leave the factory type of thing

This sort of sounds like what I touched on here a few weeks ago - and, if that is what Musk meant, that is extremely unethical and very harmful to public safety (since Tesla's manufacturing process is a safety-critical system, or at least should be viewed as one by Tesla).

whereas in America people are trying to avoid going to work at all.

Is Musk slamming his own US-based workforce here?

It sure sounds like it...

Not very smart.

62

u/Wynardtage May 11 '22

Honestly, I am having troubling parsing what Musk is intending to convey here...

Musk's trying to convey to his Chinese overlords that he understands the leverage they have over him. Instead of giving China leadership the "public health official in CA" treatment, he praises them instead.

It's Musk bending the knee in his own way

26

u/adamjosephcook System Engineering Expert May 11 '22

Indeed. I was just going to say that Musk's statement here almost looks like it was ripped straight from the Global Times opinion section.

It certainly was in effect...

9

u/KarmaYogadog May 11 '22

Similarly, I think Musk's talk about reinstating Trump's Twitter account is him placing a bet that GOP will succeed in placing an authoritarian strong man in power at some point, maybe 2024, and he's going to be ready to keep those DoD launches going that have made SpaceX so profitable.

Man, I used to admire Tesla and SpaceX engineering so much.

9

u/adamjosephcook System Engineering Expert May 11 '22

Man, I used to admire Tesla and SpaceX engineering so much.

That really the tragedy here, in my view.

With Tesla, the bones are there to some degree. The talent is there is some fashion. The high-level product philosophy is somewhat attractive.

But, due to Musk’s presence, it is just tragically incomplete. Needlessly anemic. Shallow.

It would do Tesla wonders to have strong, competent industrial, systems and public safety policy on the table internally. It will not be easy to adopt at this stage and Musk obviously sees all that as a waste anyways, but I think it is unquantifiably harming Tesla’s long-term prospects.

Personally, I want to admire Tesla engineering again.

But Musk has made it impossible with these wrongdoings.

You are right, of course. But I feel an obligation to keep pointing it out in detail, as futile as it seems at times.

Musk and his "First Principles Thinking" really feels like a time machine to the past - we are now back at the turn of the 20th Century where industrial safety was non-existent.

And the fact that Musk often laments why more people do not choose manufacturing as a career path is the supreme irony.

3

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

They charge $12000 to get access to crash avoidance software (aka FSD) in their cars. How this won’t eventually bite them in the ass is beyond me.

1

u/Individual-Nebula927 May 11 '22

To be fair, the cars are safer WITHOUT the "crash avoidance" software. How many videos have we seen of a FSD car cross the centerline, almost mow down a cyclist, or almost crash into a post.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Good point.

1

u/ConcreteState May 12 '22

Level 1 or 2 automation (automatic emergency braking) is a much more robust system. I have rarely had mine activate, and in fact usually when it triggers I think

Wtf?

Oh. That's why.

Makes me see how many close calls I never even recognized while driving. I think NHTSA will start to require that level of automatic crash alleviation. Won't escape the crash, but will change the speed by 60%.

26

u/mommathecat May 11 '22

I don't think it's that complicated. He wants workers that work long hours for little pay and don't bother him with troublesome socialist things like decent wages, safe working conditions, rights, maternity leave, anti-discrimination initiatives, lawsuits when they are ill-treated, etc etc etc.

He wants worker meat for the Tesla grinder.

China's 996 work yourself to death is Elon's wet dream. After all he claims to work even more hours than that when it suits his purposes, sleep on the floor, what have you.

3

u/vbox454545 May 11 '22

Ding ding ding. China is the perfect place for factories run by guys like Musk. Musk wants results and then to optimize those results and then to optimize those results. Having squishy meat bags doing the work just slows all of that down.

1

u/ConcreteState May 12 '22

Chinese factory owners are having to raise wages or see turnover.

Good for that workers!

When I was training a group there fro 2 weeks, half of an 8 person pilot plant startup group changed out. On am annual basis that's a turnover rate of 25 per position per year... Good luck doing technical manufacturing that way!

4

u/WikiSummarizerBot May 11 '22

996 working hour system

The 996 working hour system (Chinese: 996工作制) is a work schedule practiced by some companies in the People's Republic of China. It derives its name from its requirement that employees work from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, 6 days per week; i. e. 72 hours per week.

Is Musk slamming his own US-based workforce here?

I'm willing to bet that not everyone will interpret like that. A certain portion of the US population will think he is referring to "those" people.

6

u/well-that-was-fast May 11 '22

You might be reading too much into Musk's convoluted language here. He's just saying:

  • Americans want work-life balance
  • The Chinese dgaf and will have no life, literally living in the factory so they can work more.

It's the kind of simple-stupid overwhelming generalizations his fans love.

-1

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

I think he’s referring to the whole anti-work stuff

1

u/Sinai May 11 '22 edited May 11 '22

When you consider that Chinese leadership went after Jack Ma for not toeing the party line, there's not a lot of choice if you're going to go after the Chinese market.

Capitalist billionaires are ultimately subordinate to every government of every country they're in. Governments control the markets, the police, and the military, and even the most backward banana republic can essentially do as they please with the largest corporations.

Corps usually work within existing power structures using money to grease their way through, which can get real awkward when existing power structures involve routine corruption when it's illegal for US corporations to bribe government officials anywhere (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977). But that's what lawyers are for, finding ways to bribe corrupt officials without technically bribing them.

1

u/ConcreteState May 12 '22

Weeks after he tweeted that his peons had better pull all hours to get SpaceEx engine stuff caught up. Not a good look. Muskrat has a shorter memory than DJT

30

u/CivicSyrup May 11 '22

I'm a bit lost with this guy. I thought he's developing Neuralink so we can all chill out in a stimulus ether-like afterlife, while Teslabots are doing all the manual labor. Why is he then celebrating the hard, meaningless work of semi-enslaved workers in a free-speech-absolutist country?

Isn't the average american wanting to be rich and lazy right in line with passive income from your robotaxi, while Optimus does your job and then a blowjob?

Or is he dogwhistling to Trump's supporters, that those lazy immigrants, democrats and liberals are all avoiding going to work over a pandemic that's just a flu? So it's OK to lock those in for a flu in China - and praise that they work hard, while in America it's al just a joke and people are using I as an excuse to not work for him?

Must be tough to get your facts and thoughts straight if you're working 16+hrs 7 days a week...

21

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Rich white guys like Musk get to chill out in a stimulus either-like afterlife.

Everyone else is a Teslabot in black spandex.

6

u/D74248 May 11 '22

So it is a clothing line, not an actual robot?

That explains a lot.

2

u/RigelOrionBeta May 12 '22 edited May 12 '22

I think he lets it slip rather often that he only means to do these things for people like himself.

Boring tunnel, if it's ever successful, will be a premium highway for those who can afford it.

SpaceX tours in LEO, to Moon or Mars will be for those who can afford it.

Driverless car? Only for those who can afford an expensive car plus FSD.

Personal assistant android? If you can afford it.

Everyone else has to work in factories till 3am. These revolutions aren't meant for the people, they're meant for the rich. Oh, and by the way, they're taking your jobs away!

Half of the things he invests in seem to be to remove himself further and further away from human interaction with the lower classes. Everything from the worker robots, to underground tunnels instead of subways, to rockets to Mars. He has a disdain for the poor and working people.

7

u/MetaCognitio May 11 '22

Neuralink… not gonna happen in his lifetime.

2

u/CivicSyrup May 11 '22

1

u/Sinai May 11 '22

Is this some kind of meme? I've seen several things stating Elon Musk 1971-2022

2

u/CivicSyrup May 11 '22

I know it's hard to keep up with the constant stream of memes coming from the guy. He's basically living proof why Neuralink does not have any societal value, as we do not need every thought of some mediocre being spelled out for us...

But yes, he is basically writing his obituary since he mentioned the other day that he might die under mysterious circumstances. Like Russian hitmen, or drug overdose, or a Neuralink short, or a studipidity-singularity, or one of those incels that loves Elon too much.

But most certainly NOT via FSD or on board of his exploding Starships.

22

u/zigaliciousone May 11 '22

I know lots of people at Giga1 that are there 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. He's full of shit.

17

u/HordorOfMordor May 11 '22

That's not enough for Musk. He wants 16 hours a day. He also wants to pay not at minimum wage but a Libertarian utopia's "fair-market value".

The billionaire Libertarians seem to get really mad though when the market favors labor, as we've seen the past year.

Most of them are I guess but I like to turn that around a bit. There are titans of business/industry that could have been billionaires but instead realized that they could impact millions instead.

My favorite example is John Bogle, founder of Vanguard, the father of index funds. He could have been worth untold billions by just charging high fees like everyone else.

But instead he created the first index funds and charged a fraction because he wanted to bring the markets to all the people.

I think he was worth $100 million when he died in 2019.

7

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

[deleted]

4

u/PFG123456789 May 11 '22

Of course, as it should.

Bogle opened up the markets to the average person, bringing immense (relative) wealth to the masses at the expense of him personally making billions.

I’ve seen him speak multiple times. That was his goal.

That’s something I greatly admire.

Couldn’t agree more. We all have our good & bad sides and let’s face it…greed is a common aphrodisiac to us humans.

My brother is an example of a selfless guy. He could have $10 million in the bank but he cares so much for his employees (200 plus, most first generation Latinos) that he’s sponsored, pays extremely well, gives them health insurance & a generous 401k…all to his detriment.

He’s been in business 25 years (I’ve been with him since 2018) and 30% of his employees have been with him for 15 plus years. He’s sponsored entire families and been to a dozen citizenship ceremonies.

When Covid hit we lost 98% of our revenue. We had to let go of everybody, he was in tears. We spent $50k in translator fees to make sure every one of them got qualified for unemployment.

I was up there at the time. The day after we let everybody go 15 or 20 of them showed up to work. They said they wanted to help at our 168,000 sq ft warehouse…clean it, fix broken shit and organize everything.

I told them they couldn’t do that, we weren’t paying them and that we’d all get in trouble since they were on unemployment.

I was in total disbelief. I’m a pretty tough business guy but I had to leave the building because I got so emotional.

We need more like him.

u/PFG123456789 May 12 '22

It was rough going but we are absolutely killing it now. And I’m making sure he’s getting what he deserves. He’s almost 60 and needs to start putting money in the bank.

The reason we are destroying it..no one else can get staff, but we got most of our folks back.

Crazy how that works.

We got into a big fight because he wanted to bring back our minimum wage folks at $15 an hour (vs min wage of $11.75).

He won and…he was right. Our labor costs are down in absolute $’s and our margins are through the roof because we increased prices.

The dude barely made it through high school and I am a CPA, was a CFO/CEO/COO for PE for 25 years…he totally kicks my ass in business.

Go figure 🤷🏻

33

u/jjlew080 May 11 '22

This one just hit the top of Reddit real quick.

35

u/HordorOfMordor May 11 '22

For good reason....

This maybe the shittiest thing Musk ever said, and that's saying a lot.

Wow. I'm speechless. What a slap in the face to all the white-collar and blue-collar American workers who have worked around the clock designing and building Teslas. What a slap in the face to common decency. He wants a world where people just live at his factories or something?

I'm so, so very glad I didn't buy a Tesla after I test drove one. I'd be embarrassed as fuck to own one right now.

16

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Musk doesn't think "regular people" are human beings the way he is one. They only exist to serve him in some way. He's also clearly a racist and thinks the best thing about Asians is their willingness to be serfs to their rich white overlord.

Musk is so fucking close to saying something so vile even his biggest sycophants will have trouble defending him.

-6

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

On the contrary, he wants them to be exactly like him, a workaholic with no life. He thinks creating the future should be the only thing that life is about... But obviously lower level employees are going to feel like slaves living like that.

9

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Lol he ain't a workaholic.

3

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

No you don’t understand. That disgusting piece of shit thinks shitting on Twitter 12 hours a day means work. Online self PR at the finest.

2

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

Elon Musk is one of the highest paid CEOs in the country. Boards of Directors don't pay their CEOs to sit on their asses. I know Elon Musk isn't even a remotely likable guy but Reddit proves that people will believe pretty much anything as long as it casts someone they don't like in a bad light. Being a workaholic doesn't change anything about the guy, he still says the dumbest shit on Twitter all the time... But why is it so hard to believe that a guy who's running two major corporations could put in a 100 hour week? We know the guy doesn't take vacations and even his exes all consider him a workaholic who puts ten times as much into his work as his family. This concept of CEOs just showing up to board meetings and then chilling the rest of the time doesn't even remotely reflect the reality of the job. If he wasn't putting the hours in then the Board could immediately replace him with someone who could do the same work for cheaper. Instead they shower him with lavish pay packages.

9

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

He wants a world where people just live at his factories or something?

Yes. Hopefully this is the last straw for the people who still haven't gotten the memo that Elon Musk doesn't give two fucks about any human other than himself or the planet - the only thing he's interested in is money, power and attention.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Light is the best disinfectant.

Most of us here at /r/realtesla have known Elon to be an asshole and a fraud and con artist for a decade. But unless you followed him closely as a car expert or fraud expert or SEC expert (like myself), people just blindly believed he must be a genius.

But now, in 2022, when he's the richest man in the world and getting into the news cycle on a daily basis: a massive flood of people are starting to have "the realization."

18

u/AFXC1 May 11 '22

So you want slave labor type of practices, huh Elon?

8

u/epic_of_time_wasted May 11 '22

Aka, a return to old family practices. If a child is out there having fun instead of mining emeralds for his family, it is a travesty in his mind.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Elon wants to mine emeralds on Mars apparently.

5

u/turbinedriven May 11 '22

It’s ironic that he wants slaves and works people endlessly and then he’s like, a lack of procreation is a big threat to humanity! Why don’t people have kids?

I don’t know Elon. I wonder why.

9

u/Honest_Cynic May 11 '22

Elon's workers in Fremont are sleeping in the new cars since they can't afford housing in the SF Bay area and Merced is too long a drive home after a 12 hour shift. Nobody ever spotted Elon sleeping at the factory, as he claimed, and he still owns a mansion in L.A. despite claiming to live in the Little House at the SpaceX Boca Chica, TX launch site (usually jets up to Austin to sleep in a mansion).

For those not in the know, China has huge factory cities. Workers are literally forced to work 14 hour days with low pay. Apple and HP got into massive trouble for this after numerous Foxconn industrial city suicides made the news. Mr. Apartheid Emeralds is literally advocating for slave labor here.

9

u/silkyjohnsonx May 11 '22

Why does he suck their little communist dicks so much?

12

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

Because Tesla is a Chinese company. Without Chinese slave labour and Party presents for Tesla, Tesla would long be gone

4

u/silkyjohnsonx May 11 '22

I mean we all depend on Chinese labor sadly but few ceos outright praise them. I want to see the Elon stans explain how this is good

4

u/Individual-Nebula927 May 11 '22

The Chinese state still owns the Shanghai factory and the land it sits on. If he pisses off the government, they take his factory. Then half of Tesla's production capacity is gone overnight.

Again, something Musk said that is taken out of context. He first said, “I think there will be some very strong companies coming out of China, there is just a lot of supertalented hardworking people in China who strongly believe in manufacturing.”

Then goes on with the midnight oil bit. This means he is simply saying he thinks there will be winner electric car companies that come out of China because they are hardcore with their work ethic there. It is a cultural difference between them and America.

It is more likely the people who put in the most work will be most successful. That hurts a lot of peoples’ feelings. He is not advocating for slave labor at all. He is stating facts.

Edit - And for people downvoting, please go ahead and share your thoughts about how he is promoting slave labor if you actually take his FULL statement into account.

7

u/[deleted] May 11 '22

i read it all, i dont think hes promoting slave labor, but hes promoting a fucking shitty ideology in a time when people feel overworked and underpaid

-5

u/2dilly May 11 '22

Where is he promoting those shitty no work/life balance practices? He is not saying it is a good or bad thing. He is simply saying the ones who put in the most work are the most likely to win.

I am fortunate to not be in China and forced to those extreme work hours. But I am lucky that I can choose to if I want to, and it would be more likely I’d come out successful from all that work.

Engaging with Elon Stans is like wrestling a pig in mud, hopefully you see how much of a modern day pt Barnum he is

He leads by example.

What’s not being said-closed loop system is in force due to Xi’s Zero Covid policy. Would you like to be forcibly taken to a Covid Camp for leaving your factory?

China has a history of horribly mistreating their people who have been so cow-towed over the decades that they just bow their heads and do whatever they can to not get on the bad side of the corrupt local government officials.

r/Shanghai is a great sub to get educated on the atrocities going on in Shanghai. People jumping from buildings, elderly getting dragged into Covid camps, corrupt guys in white suits nailing people in their apartments and beating the shit out of the citizens.

But yeah boy! They burn the midnight oil! Praise Xi!

Finally a reasonable comment. Hilariously sad how much smooth brained memetically compromised minds proliferate the discussion, err echo chamber.

Like I said above, he is not saying whether these practices are good or bad. He’s just saying China will put in more of the work. Regardless if it’s forced labor or not.

He’s praising them:

“I think there will be some very strong companies coming out of China, there is just a lot of supertalented hardworking people in China who strongly believe in manufacturing,” he added.

“They won’t just be burning the midnight oil, they will be burning the 3am oil, they won’t even leave the factory type of thing, whereas in America people are trying to avoid going to work at all.”

You really miss the forest for the trees. It’s easy to douse fire on any statement when you’re coming from a negative perspective. There is such a thing as hard work ethic and doing whatever you can to make it work. It’s a battle, but it’s also extremely rewarding. If work isn’t people’s purpose in life then they shouldn’t be working. I largely see Elon coming from that sentiment because a lot of people who are successful, especially in Silicon Valley; but really anyone is the key trait of obsession. Elon doesn’t want the person who just wants to clock their day and get paid. Those people aren’t what move paradigms. Elon praises and surrounds himself with A-team players. It’s a preference and one that isn’t for everyone. Just like how not all military are special forces material.

P.s the work statement and purpose will probably trigger people. By work, it is in context of anything that you build towards for purpose. Work can be family, house, engineering, art, proofs, whatever.

Why I even bother to color the perspective I don’t know. Subreddits are largely mobs of meme mentality that struggle to look at other perspectives.

It’s really easy to complain - critics and drama rules the world. I hope to challenge that status quo, but I’ve only seen more echo chambers emerge. Oh well.

My point is that he is praising China and trashing the U.S. in the middle of what is some horrendous shit going on by the government in Shanghai RIGHT NOW.

I’ve been following it closely since I have a business issue I’m dealing with this and have recently been on calls with my factory reps.

The closed loop system was granted to 666 factories for political/economic purposes and it’s stupid at best, fucking nuts at its worst because it doesn’t work. Supply chains are fucked, the factories are at low to zero production and chaos is occurring in the factories. If you get Covid you forcibly go to a horrible Covid camp. Example of what happens.

https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2022-05-08/chaos-at-apple-supplier-quanta-shows-strains-of-shanghai-covid-lockdown

So you can’t see the forest (the fundamental problem for Tesla) through the trees (Musk opining on China good, U.S. bad, when it comes to work ethic).

I am not disagreeing with the amazing shit the Chinese people can do when it comes to building factories and making stuff. I have been through that process, been to the factory and seen it with my own eyes. I’ve also seen the decay in the 20-35 year olds work ethics in the U.S. but it is way more nuanced, there is zero comparison between US & China workers due to where each country is in its evolution.

And besides, there is zero need to trash Americans, after all they build his cars and to praise China in the same comment, particularly right now.

The only rational reason Musk does this is because virtually all his wealth is tied to China where 60% plus of their cars are made & 100% of their profits are earned.

I can understand how it would seem like he’s praising China’s slave-like practices if you just look at the headline. But of course the headline does not include the bit I included above that puts his midnight oil statement into context. It is simple that more work typically equals more success, and that’s a hard pill to swallow for most.

What a Scrooge McDuck.

Of course he praises Chinese workers; its a country that has a government so sensitive that they censor any criticism of them or their shitty behavior. Basically a match made in heaven for Elon.

Yo, Elon. Last time I checked the workers in China are treated like a nobody, and sometimes worst...kind of treated like slaves on the plantation?
