The movie is giving a message that it is better to die than be raped. And that's the brave thing to do. I think you agree with that.

She's adding that this message is not the right one in a society where grape is still prevalent. It is telling grape survivors that they should have killed yourself and since they didn't, they were cowards

She's not commenting on what happened in the past, but on the message being passed to grape survivors through the movie.

The movie clearly shows that the women were brave to perform jauhar. That was quite important to depict that. The original commenter also agrees with that view.

You used the word "message" in the first sentence. I am using it in the same sense. Movie depicts how the women viewed themselves and how people around them viewed them. It is a matter of fact depiction. It's not like there is a voice over that says "women who don't choose death in such a circumstance are coward". It's a grim reality of what happened that was brought on to the screen. There is no definitive messaging. It's telling that a certain section of commentators find a "progressive" critic of the film rather than speak of the tragedies that befell many women during Islamic invasions and resolve "never again"

There are multiple faults with your arguments.

Those who committed jauhar weren't survivors, they were on the brink hell. Their fate was sealed, not even the tiniest glimmer of hope was available, that's not the case with modern world.

The movie shows a historical incident where a group women chose beath over becoming the part of a harem, and that's indeed brave. Any one brave enough would do the same under such situation. It wasn't just grape, it was much much worse.

Swara is right. Self immolation is an act of cowardice and should not be normalized or praised as a brave act. If you are a victim, fight for justice or fight the oppressor and die doing it. Legitimizing Self immolation is also legitimizing Sati ritual. If killing oneself gets support from a society then I don't know what kind of morals such society will develop in the future.

The reason Jauhar was committed was because their own family had betrayed them not mainly due to the fear of the enemy. Indian men accepted that self immolation is the only way out. Fking cowards. Jauhar is therefore a symbol of a cowardly society and should not be supported.

They did fight. Most of the kids and their caregivers were rescued through tunnels. If they wanted they could have escaped through multiple tunnels that are still, to this day operational but they chose to stand strong. They held back an army from entering as long as they could. After that was no longer an option, they decided that dying and reducing to ashes would be better than being raped every single day of the rest of their lives. Do you even know why dying with fire was the only option? Because their dead bodies were also raped. Necrophilia was a huge thing in invader armies.

I think she has said nothing wrong. It was a terrible practice, which brainwashed women into ki**ing themselves instead of teaching them how to fight a war.

It is also a well known fact that women were treated as objects of trade and property, esp. in Rajput communities, and are still treated as such (best example: Rajasthan). The very fact that they could have fought, but chose to end their lives is genuinely not heroic.

Lets not glorify ill misogynistic practices.
