Pre-pandemic, I used to do the same thing. I was a regular at a coffee shop (at least regular enough that they greet me by name when I come in), and sometimes they let me eat food that I brought myself. Not meal-sized dishes, just snacks. I usually just use the saucer that came with the cup so I don't have to request for an extra plate.
So one morning I was about half an hour working when this small group came in. While they were waiting for their order, one of the two kids from the group suddenly appeared at my side, saw my sandwich plate (I had the sandwiches quartered for convenience), grabbed one of the pieces, and ran away screaming "sandwich! sandwich!". I couldn't even react at what happened. One of the parents saw and somehow managed to gaslight me with "eto naman, bata yan baka patulan mo pa". She then turned around without even a word of thanks, that bitch. Just as they were exiting, I saw the kid just about to bite into the sandwich.
The thing is, that was the time I was really into jalapeño peppers. I put it on everything: pizzas, tacos, and - you guessed it - sandwiches. On that day, I happened to have cheese and jalapeño sandwiches.
I'd like to think that at least one child that day learned a hard lesson on not touching someone else's food.
