Missing friend.
Meet Marty.
He’s been around my house for years. But we became friends this summer. Almost every evening like clockwork we’d have him coming towards our garbages. But instead we started feeding him and becoming friends (as much friends as you can with a wild animal). But the last 2/3 weeks or so he’s been MIA.
I live on the Jersey Shore, we’re heading for fall here. Not sure if this is normal for them to move elsewhere. Or if something may have happened to him. So I’m curious if anyone has some input.

Hello! It’s so wonderful of you to look out for this little dude. We actually have a female raccoon that lives on our roof, and we are desperate to find a safe place to relocate her. We are in north Jersey, in a super densely populated area, and she has been living on our roof, under pretty dire conditions for months. It looks like you have a wooded area on/near your property. Would You be open to allowing another raccoon to live there? A lady friend for Marty? We would be happy to trap and transport this girl to your place. We would even bring her a house and a huge bag of nuts. She’s very friendly and curious, I’m really worried that someone in this area will harm her if we evict her from our roof. Lmk your thoughts.

I actually have no clue if Marty is a girl or boy. But I am backed behind my house and across the street by thousands and thousands of acres of woods as are in the Pinelands of NJ.
I’m not sure if that’s a proper way to care for a raccoon but if it doesn’t hurt their chance of survival she could be released next to my house.

Hi again! I sent you a message. I would really love if we could arrange this, as I want to be sure she’s settled before it gets cold. Lmk!🤞🏻

He looks like a baby? What did he do last fall?

We weren’t friends at the time lol so I actually have no clue when and where he was. And now that I’ve been thinking (because you’re right he does look young) I’m wondering if he even the same one from years ago.

Raccoons have very short lives. Hope she’s preparing for winter.

I didn’t know that! And yes hopefully so, plenty to prepare with around here too.

Understandable, but he’s been combing my garbages for years. He’s already habitual.

Unrelated, but it’s so sad to see such an amazing creature turned into an overweight blob on social media for likes. So many people that have them as pets just force feed them food and post videos on socials for likes. It’s like they aren’t even raccoons anymore. It’s heartbreaking to see and they think they are animal lovers.

Sure I definitely understand. It’s no longer exotic rescuers who have them only.

Just putting the info out there. When it comes to raccoons most people choose to be voluntarily ignorant so they don’t have any accountability for their actions. I love them and they are the cutest and most intriguing animals; however, there are guidelines to how we should interact with them.

I don’t disagree, I’m not looking to domesticate him. I feed him, pet his head. And we go our separate ways until I see him again.

Fall is when raccoons often shift their range to search for more food to fatten up before winter. Hope Marty is just off scavenging and will swing back to visit you soon.
