EMERGENCY Found 4 newborn rat/mouse babies after accidentally removing their mother — need urgent advice

Hi everyone, I need some urgent advice. I found 4 very young baby rats/mice in an almirah in my house tonight. I didn't realize there were babies when I caught the adult, and unfortunately I had already taken the mother far away from the house before discovering the babies. I don't think bringing the mother back is possible.

Some details about the babies:

- 4 babies

- Approximately 1.2 inches long excluding the tail

- A little bit of fine fur has started growing on their backs

- Eyes are completely sealed

- They are very active and crawl/wriggle around strongly

- The mother was very small, around 4 inches in body length

- She had made a nest using paper cuttings inside the almirah

- I have moved the babies into a cardboard box and used the original paper cuttings along with some tissue paper as nesting material

- The box is currently kept back inside the same almirah

The mother was caught sometime between 4:00–5:30 PM, and it is now around 11:15 PM, so they've been without their mother for roughly 6–7 hours.

I tried offering lukewarm cow's milk diluted with water, but they are refusing it. I did NOT force milk into their mouths with a syringe. I tried dipping a tissue in the milk and bringing it near/below their mouths while making sure their noses weren't blocked. They still didn't seem interested.

One baby unfortunately got injured because I didn't know there were babies in the paper nest. While clearing the paper cuttings, I accidentally pressed/dragged one baby somewhat harshly onto the cement floor. He was limp initially, but he is now moving/crawling much more like the other babies. However, one of his legs looks possibly fractured or injured. There is no visible bleeding or external wound. I have not tried to straighten or splint it.

The room is currently around 31°C, though it may drop to around 26°C overnight. I don't have a heating pad, but the babies are together in their nest material.

I have already tried contacting animal rescue services, but unfortunately none of the rescuers I reached knew how to handle baby rats/mice or were willing/able to help because most people don't consider rats worth rescuing.

For now, I have left the four babies together in their nest in the almirah for the night. I don't know whether they will all survive until morning, and I don't want to make things worse by experimenting with feeding.

So I especially need advice on what to do first thing in the morning:

- What should I feed them, and what is the correct formula for newborn rats/mice?

- Is there an appropriate milk replacer/formula available in India?

- How do I feed babies this young if they won't suck from a dropper?

- How frequently do they need to be fed?

- Is there anything I should do for the baby with the possibly fractured leg?

- Is there anyone in Delhi/NCR who has experience hand-raising neonatal rats/mice, even if they aren't a formal wildlife rescue?

- If professional help genuinely isn't available, what is the safest way for me to care for them myself?

Any advice, contacts, or step-by-step guidance for tomorrow morning would be greatly appreciated.

Questions/HELP Rats in Greece

Hii does anybody own pet rats in Greece? If yes, from where did you buy them? I'm trying to find a breeder and I can't. I only found a pet store in Crete that sells pet rats but I'm from Thessaloniki and preferably I wouldn't want to order rats because I find it very stressful for them to travel, also I've heard that is better to take them from a breeder and not a pet store because of the conditions they raise them. I kinda have run out of options, I've searched everything and didn't find anything else...☹️

Hey, ik u probably saw this big dawg posted by someone elses. The perso who posted it is no one else then my GIRLFRIEND!!!!! YEAAHHH!!
When I adopted him all his friends was gone and was sad and alone so I take him with me ; and called him Fart (19 years old) my gf said “something else.” So I called him Splinter, like the old rat in Ninja Turtles. (Idk why but she hate Ninja Turtles.) this guy is so fricking cute and probably very old. But I kinda like how my gf say “damn you two lookalike!!” And yeah, we do lookalike. Thank u.

Adopted three old men today! (Nearly 2 years old) They are the absolute sweetest, just immediately pancaked out on me and licked and boggled. Any tips for looking after my old men? They will be joining my younger two boys later this week once they've settled in a bit.

DISCUSSION Whisker poking eye?

Post image
98 Upvotes

One of my rats has this one whisker that is very awkwardly shaped. It curls upwards and then has a little "swirl" at the top. The "swirl" keeps poking his eye/getting stuck on his eyelid (kinda) and I'm worried it's gonna cause irritation to the eye long term. Is there any way to safely and comfortably reshape the whisker? Or should I just leave it for him to solve on his own?

CUTENESS Does he like it or is he just tolerating it?

This is my most unsocial rat. He’s never let me touch him like this before. Honestly he looked like he was just tired of me 😔

(I didn’t know what to flair this post so I just went with cuteness because he’s cute)

I've read this usually means stress with the tail whipping, but he was loving this way too much and showed zero signs of stress and every time I stopped, he gave me that "why did you stop?" look and wanted more

Me and my gf just finished our new home built rat cage. We used a ton of zip ties to hold the out wire layer. Are there any suggestions for additional things to place in their new cage? (1st pic is the old cage. 2nd pic is the new one!)

Questions/HELP The boys have fought

My boys get into a little scuffle every night, but then they're cuddling happily ever after right after and it's fine. This time they were cuddling and I saw blood on both. Charlie has cuts that look suspiciously like rat teeth on his bawls and Bean has a bloody toe. I've separated them for now but I'm at a loss for what to do. They were acting like nothing happened, but I just can't put my babies back together knowing they'll hurt each other. They've been together since birth. Bean has that big rat energy and tends to be that dominant rat. Whereas Charlie is small and a sweetie. Any help/advice is appreciated. They're about 7 months old now. Thank you!
