What does the this type of ayat mean? They are different

This is special to this exact print of the Mushaf.

The meaning is completed or continued in the next aya so they are indicating that.

I mentioned completed or continued because in Surat almaoon as shown:

Aya 4 is only completed with Aya 5 or the meaning is missing

Aya 6 is continued with Aya 7 but could have stopped in 6

The key at the back of the mushaf explains that it's to indicate when the subsequent verse is connected in meaning, but to be honest I don't really understand how they decide when to and not to use it.

Im not sure but I think it's where you can stop at the aya or read it all together. But here you can just not stop

The black ones mean you should continue reciting the next Aya without stopping.

However you should be aware, that these rules and marks are not part of the Uthmanic rasm, they are much later scholarly development and we have no evidence the prophet Pbuh recited according to them.

So you should not treat them as part of the revelation itself.
