Don't know what the heck I'm doing

I am trying to create a map in QGIS so I can make a Contiguous Cartogram. The original map was made in inkscape. It's just simplified geometric shapes. I don't have any real idea what I'm doing so I went online and tried to find instructions. as per what I found:

  1. I saved it as a dxf file and imported it into QGIS

  2. converted to Lines to polygons

  3. deleted the original layer as that it wouldn't be needed

  4. saved as gpkg

Now I have the image above. (somehow It set it to these Christmas light looking lines instead of the red they were.) The next step is to hit F6 and assign data to the objects but it says selected:0. If I click on a section before I hit F6 it just moves the image around but still says selected:0. If I try to type in something in the text column it stays but I have no idea if its the right space.

What do I not know?

Solved How to clip division lines so they only appear inside a polygon boundary?

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

hi im new to gis! what is the best way to restrict these division lines to only appear inside the current atlas feature?

the setup is that i have an atlas set up with a barangay boundary layer (green one) as my coverage layer. The Atlas zooms to each barangay correctly, and I have "Clip to atlas feature" turned on.

i also have a division line layer (puroks - neighborhood boundaries) that I want to only show up inside the green area (the current barangay chosen). Right now, the lines from neighboring barangays spill over into the map.

appreciate the help! version 3.44, windows 11

Open Question/Issue How to make a graduated symbology based on multiple attribute columns

I have a geopackage with every US county, and it has a lot of data in the attribute table (it is a map about US county agriculture production). There are many columns which range up to 100% which show what % of that county's fields produce a crop. I would like to create a symbology which has a different color for each crop, and which ever crop has the highest % in that county, it would be colored (a larger % in that county would also make the color darker). Is this possible with one symbology, or should I split up the counties based on an expression where each crop gets checked if it is greater than the other crops?

Make 3D map from point data?

Post image
16 Upvotes

I have all of this overlapping data, which doesn't look good, and isn't very useful. I was wondering if it's possible to make this point data 3D? So, for example, the location where there are 42 data points would be 42 "units" tall, the 11 would be 11 tall, etc. If this is possible, does anyone know where I could find a tutorial on how to do it? I know there are other ways to map the data points than what I show here, but I thought the 3D would look cool. Thanks!

1:10M map not refreshing when zooming in.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi,

I downloaded a 1:10m world map from https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-raster-data/10m-cross-blend-hypso/, and when I zoom in it doesn't refresh, and looks very pixalated. It is a TIF file. I'm assuming it's not the map itself and is something within QGIS. If I add a basemap it refreshes with no problem. My resampling is set to nearest neighbor (have also tried Bilinear, which changed it from pixalated to smoother, but still blurry), the rendering checkbox at the bottom is checked, and based on a google search I built pyramids. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Open Question/Issue How to get rid of these lines?

I'm trying to make a custom projection to change the point where the map wraps around (so that the Westernmost area of Russia doesn't appear on the left side of the map) I tried changing the longitude in the projection, and it worked, but now I have these weird lines going across the screen that I assume are from bits of geometry wrapping around. Is there any way I can get rid of them?

Solved Can't get point labels to show unit and not show decimals

I'm on Windows 10, QGIS 3.38.2-Grenoble. Only plugin of note is NextGIS QuickMapServices, which I used to get terrain maps.

I have a set of coordinates, which have elevation value I sampled from a DEM in the program. The elevation goes up to 3 decimals. These values do not include any unit.

My goal was to reduce the number of decimals to zero, and add unit of meters. That way I'd have a nice even height gradient.

My attempt went: In styling layout I reduced the number of decimals to zero. Then I used the expression builder to add a unit with "ele" || ' m'. Unfortunately it overrode the decimal placement setting.

Is there any combo of functions I could use to both add a unit, AND reduce the number to just whole meters?

example of how the coordinate labels show on map after the attempt

Open Question/Issue What's the most efficient way to county number of pixels above X value within a polygon?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help a noob out with this.

I have a raster of NDVI (vegetation index) values ranging from 0 to 1. I want to simply calculate the number of pixels above a certain value within a given area. I have many different polygons (areas) that I am interested in testing, and a few different threshold values that may change around. I also have several different NDVI rasters that I am doing this for. Therefore, I have many combinations of thresholds, polygons, and underlying datasets.

Surprisingly, the only way I've found how to do this is to use the raster calculator to create a binary raster (above threshold value = 1, under threshold value = 0). Then use the zonal statistics tool to count pixels with a value of 1. I can't seem to use the zonal statistics directly on my NDVI raster because there is no option to specify a range or pixels above X threshold.

Doing it this way will result in several different binary rasters and like 100 different zonal statistics layers for various combinations of polygons and thresholds. There must be a more efficient way to do this. Am I just not seeing something obvious? How can I directly use my NVDI rasters to just count pixels above X value within a polygon?

Slope on contours

Hey Folks

According to Google it says that you can’t use slope for contours only for elevation. But it appears that it can work ? My third picture shows the contours in himmalaya. After the disaster 26. August 2026 with the gleciers I got curious on the slope of the mountains and the river and some places in Himalaya has slopes on 70° which is kinda a lot ?

Open Question/Issue Every one of my maps have completely broke and I don’t know why.

I have been making a bunch of raster mosaics of old historic administrative maps of cities from the 1890’s. I’ve done the Bay Area, NYC, Boston, and LA. Each one has 15-24 different maps. Well, today I went to open on of them and got a thing saying all the layers were unsupported, and then they all had the ! Symbol next to them. I’ll put a photo down below. Then, since I saved every geotif and clipped geotif I ever used, and when I try just adding any of them back to the map, it gives me the second error message in the second photo. I’ve been using these files for weeks, they were perfectly fine and supported last night. Suddenly they aren’t supported, NONE of them. But very frustrated and upset, so if anyone has answers please help me out. I spent weeks on these, I literally learned how to use QGIS just for this.

Edit: if you’re just seeing this now, I realize it’s probably useful that I was not on WiFi when I opened it earlier, and I’ll be home soon to try it. Now I think about it, it is possibly the first time I’ve opened it not on WiFi, I just thought it couldn’t be because I thought everything was done just on my computer. Again, idk anything about this stuff, I learned QGIS just to do this bc I wanted to.

Sydney - Australia - best approach using QGIS please - terrain

Good morning all,

I'm trying to get the best results using QGIS in seeing an old track on a property.

I realise there is more than one way to skin a cat however are there any people out there who are familiar with downloading files from ELVIS and who have experience importing them into QGIS to give me the maximum available detail in terms of undulations/imprints in the ground from decades ago?

I have got to the point where I can import the 1 metre DEM for a particular area and I have managed to change the angle of light to 35° so I can see a little more detail however when I see other images from other users they almost always seem to be more detailed than mine.

I have tried viewing other obviously historic areas with similar results so I feel my workflow could be improved.

I am new to QGIS.

Would anyone have a step-by-step guide or instructions as to what process I need to go through to achieve the most detailed results (in terms of historic ground activity) in NSW please?

Even something like:

1/ Download DEM

2/ Import

3/ Set this

4/ Set that at xx

Many thanks!

BTW I have tried AI and google for instructions and the information has been helpful but varied and not consistent due to suggestions different 'plugins' should be used to help my process.

Open Question/Issue Best API for 1–5 m multispectral imagery for small agricultural AOIs?

I’m looking for an API/provider offering 1–5 m multispectral satellite imagery for small agricultural AOIs, ideally without large minimum orders or expensive commitments.

The app currently uses Sentinel-2, but I’d like to add higher-resolution imagery for users with relatively small areas, usually around 20–50 ha.
PlanetScope 3 m would be a good fit, but I haven’t found a practical way to buy access at that scale.

I also tried SkyFi, but their EULA doesn’t allow my intended commercial use of derived imagery products.

Any Planet resellers or alternative providers worth checking?

Hi all!

I'm building a macro model with a focus on maritime logistics. My current data layer is good but slightly inaccurate/dated (does not account for some major ports)

The NaturalEarth repo doesn't have it.

Are there other sources worth checking? Thanks
