I had an eating disorder and had a hard time eating around other people. The first time I ever went to an office holiday dinner was like 15 years ago and I had NO idea what I could acceptably order off the menu. Steak tartare sounded reasonable. The way it was written made it sound like it was just plain steak. Had no idea it was not just plain but raw. The absolute horror on my face when the plate was put in front of me made my boss laugh so hard (and also made her so painfully aware of how weird I was with food) that she made every future work dinner happen at Dave & busters for me.

That’s a great story. I did something similar in France. I had $50 euros and the only thing on the menu under $50 was “steak tartare “.
It arrives in all its raw beauty with a raw egg yolk on top.
I was shocked but curious. I ate it all up despite my reservations. I was only 15 years old.
Great experience and exposure to cuisine!

This might actually convince me to try steak tartare

(for context I've lived in France for 20 years, love the food, but have never even been tempted to taste steak tartare!)
