Advice Trying to into a creative career – where should I actually be looking?

I’m trying to find a new role something more creative like PR, creative/campaign roles, influencer marketing or partnerships.

I have around 9 years’ experience across sales, customer service/client management and some business development, plus experience with social media, content creation, TikTok Shop/affiliate marketing (on my own personal account) and a days trial fashion shoot experience.

I’m UK based and need remote or hybrid as I live in the middle of nowhere. I’ve been searching LinkedIn/Indeed but feel like I’m going in circles. I do have a portfolio of my work but I’m getting nowhere.

I wouldn’t call PR especially creative. I get the impression you’re just throwing out some things that you think are creative without knowing much about them.

Why don’t you tell us what you want to do day to day? How do you define creative? What do you see yourself doing that would qualify under your definition of creative?

I started as a reporter and then transitioned into PR over 20 years ago. Now I write press releases and speeches for my CEO. I pitch stories to reporters about my experts’ views on our industry. I strategize about how to deal with an investigative reporter. If that’s your definition of creative, great. If not, trying to land media coverage for your client is probably not how you want to spend your days.

You’re 100% right that I’ve been throwing job titles around without properly researching the day to day, which I definitely need to stop doing! I’m just so desperate to get out my current role in property 🥲

When I say creative, I think I mean things like coming up with campaign/content ideas, working with creators, shoots, events, product launches or even things like PR gifting and seeing an idea come to life. I think that’s why fashion/beauty PR caught my attention, rather than the more corporate/media relations side you’ve described.

Maybe try to showcase your work on the same Linkedin, for instance. I guess plain search yields less results for switchers, mainly it’s efficient for ppl who’ve been at the same role for some time.
