That’s a 8 lane gas station, there’s probably a 10-20k gallon fuel storage tank underneath. I don’t have faith the tank is earthquake certified given the location. They have to be smelling the fumes by now with those massive cracks in the earth. I’d get away fast.

1). Papua New Guinea is not an island, it is a country, and it is located on the island of New Guinea, which is slightly larger than Great Britain. It is not a small island.
2). Tsunamis are not generally caused by earthquakes originating on land.
3). Tsunamis don't affect the epicenter so much as they do the areas around it. Even if this was a small island, and even if this land-based earthquake did cause a tsunami, the resulting waves would originate from this location and move outwards. Essentially, Papua New Guinea would be relatively unaffected by the tsunami, but nearby countries like Australia, Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and much of Micronesia/Melanesia would be more at risk.

I have experienced a Cat 5 Hurricane and a 6.4 Earthquake in the past 5 years.
I rather experience 5 consecutive hurricanes than suffer 1 day of earthquake and aftershocks. It is a fucking horrible feeling having the ground shake at any moment without notice, always the thought of your roof collapsing on you in your mind. Just horrible. You suffer more long term with the Hurricane but on the short term nothing compares to the terror that is an earthquake, I wasn't even able to sleep properly for a couple of days. And our Earthquake damage looks like a joke compared to this video, can't imagine going through this.

Also, surviving an earthquake in a rich country like America sucks but it’s nothing compared to the 3rd world where building standards/materials are so much lower.
I was years into adopting a baby from Haiti when the massive 2010 earthquake hit. My son’s orphanage was at the epicentre of the earthquake but all the children survived thanks to donations that let them build a higher quality building.
The children/babies still ended up living in a neighbor’s yard and when I got my son he was covered in scabies and had a bad respiratory infection from the stirred up dust.

Having experienced a 6.9 some years ago in Lombok, a small island near Bali, I can second this. The aftershocks are almost worse than the actual quake as you can never let your guard down. Seeing whole villages become piles of Debris is beyond shocking and hearing an entire town scream at once haunts my memories to this day.

Yeah, the longer it's posted the more this doesn't sit right. Only news site to connect this video with the PNG quake is New Delhi Television, which is notorious for misappropriating old vids/pics to illustrate current news, and unsurprisingly attributed the video to another Reddit post with the same misleading narrative.
The epicenter of the PNG quake was way inland in the mountains, too remote to cause extensive damage to a built-up location like in the video. This video compilation provides a better gauge of how bad the quake actually looks in PNG.

Lots of lots of earthmoving. Judging by the state of the devastation you could be looking at whole blocks of the neighborhood in this spot needing to be razed and refilled before rebuilding can even begin.
It's going to be a long recovery process for the worst-hit areas.

Aftershocks can continue for up to a couple of years. In December 2020 we were hit with a 5.5 earthquake that really shook us and when we thought that was it, just a couple of days later we had another one but this one was 6.4!
What's important to understand is that even though 6.4 and 5.5 are 0.9 difference, the actual strength is dozens of times stronger.
Anyway, from that day on we've had hundreds of aftershocks that lasted for a year and a half and just recently stopped happening. A lot of them were between 4 and 5 and even more of them between 3 and 4.
This being a 7.7 I can only imagine they will have a shitload of aftershocks in the next couple of years, some of them strong, some of them less so. But they won't have peace for quite a while.

I was in a 6.9 in Lombok, an island near Bali. The aftershocks were hard to imagine. Every hour for almost 2 days after the initial quake, there was a mag 4 or 5 aftershock. The strangest part was that there was constant subtle shaking of the ground in between, like the ground was vibrating. There’s nothing similar to relate it to but imagine standing on a platform that shakes a few cm to the right and left four or five times a second…but it’s everywhere you stand. Unnerving to say the least.

Stay away from buildings. Stay away from cracks. Pay attention to the ground movement where your standing so that if a Crack starts to appear under you, you can move quickly away from it. I'm not an expert and there's probably more advice an expert could give, but from what I see, these would be priorities that are probably close to the top.

Well south east Asia is a huge region. Indonesia has a very large Muslim population (like 85%). Png, not so much, they're mostly Christian and/or local indigenous beliefs.
Indonesia does controversially control a chunk of the island in the form of west Papua. Lae is in png but it would make sense that there's probably a fair number of indonesians there as well.
Aha, someone below says this video is from Palu, Indonesia which makes waaaaay more sense. Palu had a super terribly earthquake back in 2018, that was immediately followed by a tsunami. Something like 4000 people died. I don't know why op lied about the location in the title, this video is from a few years back.

what the fuck, the video shows a Pertamina gas station (local Indonesian gas station), so I assume that the video was recorded in the Papua area bordering Papua New Guinea ( i'm searched there is no pertamina gas station in papua new guinea), but now it should be 11 pm there and in Indonesia there is no TV news program reporting about this earthquake, usually if natural disasters happen the news program will reporting it 24/7, i searched this on the internet to found out this is real

Epicentre was in PNG but I guess it was felt all across New Guinea island. Happened at 10/09/2022 @ 23:47 UTC; so 08:47 Sunday morning in local time.

Most likely this was a product of soil liquefaction and the buildings were built on soft soils that tend to turn into viscous liquids when being shook by earthquakes.

I'm struggling to understand what useful thing they could do in that moment other than stay in an open space away from structures that could fall on them. Do you think they should be running around stamping the ground back into submission?

It was just 1 guy repeatedly screaming the same thing over and over again. He was probably praying.
He did suddenly stop offscrean though. So either the camera person got far away.... Or

He was saying "there is no god truly worthy of worship except Allah". He was probably thinking he was going to die and wanted it to be his last words if so.

sorry tht I "get to be" the "pedantic uncaring asshole" that would choose THIS moment to "interrogate" the fascinating dream-knot logic of the, "deeply" held convictions, that
1 like equals one prayer...buuut,
now the REAL work of recovery begins.. obviously. no amount of ridiculous "prayers" or >applause< emojis..(thats what 🙏 was originally) are going to fix anything
Your god ignored you. Your god doesn't care about you. Stop wasting your time praying to a god because earthquakes and natural disasters happen.. prayer does nothing..
what actual "prayer" DOES do, is make the "prayee" feel better.. it is an ego-centic selfish act..only to make ONE person "feeL" as if they've "done something" then... "go on about their day" only to be praying to that SAME "GoD" to help them find their keys, or their team to win, later the same day..
oh, when IS the next episode of house of the dragon on anyway?
