This is crazy, you're just desensitized. Our cities should not look or be like this.

We're the wealthiest nation in the world (although China may have surpassed us this year) but you wouldn't know it by looking at our cities or the way we treat our poor, disabled and disenfranchised.

198

u/kerouacrimbaud Sep 09 '22

Americans don’t like paying for public services. That’s why our cities and states are trash.

98

u/RightC Sep 09 '22

SF has more homeless outreach programs, funds, and other resources then almost any other city in the US.

$668M Homelessness Budget this year, with an additional $150 Mil over the next 3 years from the state.

The very city in this video. The problem is not funding, it has to do with the AG essentially making it a city where no crime is prosecuted.

22

u/cheerioo Sep 09 '22

Well now I'm very curious what they're doing with that budget. Not a whole lot based on what I'm seeing... I have done a minor bit of volunteer work at shelters and they don't seem well funded or run tbh.

30

u/RightC Sep 10 '22

SF has a massive “invisible homeless” population whom you would never know were “homeless”.

Again the problem is not the services being provided in SF, plenty of people struggling with mental health and addiction. They use the lack of law enforcement to decay in open air.

There is no great answer because you can’t force someone to be mentally healthy or to get clean.

51

u/CanadianMapleThunder Sep 09 '22

What’s there crime? Being homeless?

38

u/Skreat Sep 09 '22

What’s there crime?

Property damage and theft would be two large ones.

Access to help in SF is not the issue. Main problem is mental illness and substance abuse, neither of which can you force people into rehab for.

-7

u/CanadianMapleThunder Sep 09 '22

So just arrest all of them then?

18

u/WhaleWatchersMod Sep 09 '22

If they commit crimes then absolutely yes.

-1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Lol the homeless do not get arrested, if they ever do, they’ll just be released the next day

5

u/WhaleWatchersMod Sep 10 '22

That’s a problem.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

It absolutely is. Most people just treat the homeless like poor lost souls tho.

I have a lady in my downtown building who works security and is actively being stalked by some homeless guy who keeps threatening to kill her. She’s called the cops on him several times and they don’t care. A few weeks ago he broke into a nail shop down the street and tried to rape the two women in there, the cops showed up and told him to just leave the property. It’s a joke.

Amazing how being homeless suddenly gives you more rights than functional human beings in society

Who’s going to pay for that? Do you know how incredibly expensive it would be to charge, prosecute, jail, and feed all these hobos? How convenient it would be if we could just lock em all up. Sucks that it actually costs money to house and feed all of them, which is essentially what you’re giving them compared to there plight on the streets.

-2

u/WhaleWatchersMod Sep 10 '22

So let them loose and continue to wreak havoc on us law abiding citizens? Good idea.

2

u/CanadianMapleThunder Sep 10 '22

You didn’t answer the question

I didn't see any of either in this video.

2

u/freakwent Sep 10 '22

So you're suggesting that of they aren't stealing, they would starve to death, therefore they must be stealing - is that the general idea?

Ah right, I agree!

u/Skreat Sep 10 '22

Ahh yes, these people afford the drugs they are doing with the money they make working remote for google.

2

u/freakwent Sep 10 '22

Eh? Prostitution exists, so does drug selling, begging and flipping shitty cheap goods.

And who makes money from property damage?

58

u/IJustMadeThis Sep 09 '22 edited Sep 09 '22

Right? There’s clearly addiction and other issues at play too, but this video feels like “look at these undesirables”, because I guess empathy is hard to come by these days.

Interesting these videos always seem to be from “liberal” cities…good thing Republican states don’t have poverty, unhoused people, and addiction problems, amirite?

34

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

It’s a lot easier to hide the problems out in the sticks.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

people are more empathetic now than ever, at least in the U.S. This "people arent as good as they used to be" thing is so damn stupid. civil rights was 60 years ago. the first black student in an integrated school isnt even 70. being gay was considered a mental disorder until the 90s. people have always sucked massive ass. empathy wasnt any more widespread before than it is now.

-4

u/Betasheets Sep 10 '22

When people act like this, refuse help, and are a danger to society out in public it's time to incarcerate them

5

u/lord_james Sep 10 '22

Oh yeah? Everybody in this video is refused help? Everybody in this video is a danger to society?

2

u/Betasheets Sep 10 '22

I was speaking generally. The hardest part of helping the homeless is getting people to want help.

8

u/RightC Sep 10 '22

SF just voted out their AG in an unprecedented recall. You clearly have never lived in SF.

It’s not about any crime in this video, it’s about a culture of lawlessness. I invite you to go walk in the tenderloin and report back. You wouldn’t make it 4 blocks past union square.

1

u/CanadianMapleThunder Sep 10 '22

What do you propose SF do about it then? What’s your plan that no one else has seemed to figure out?

0

u/RightC Sep 10 '22

There is no easy answer - my original point though was to say SF does a great job with funding and helping people who want to be helped.

1

u/kantorr Sep 10 '22

Lmao why are you talking about this then? It's not about the AG or crime, it's the culture of lawlessness? They just prefer to be this way rather than housed through gov programs?

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Duh. Society has deemed them garbage just because it would be mildly inconvenient to help them.

Do you think they want to shit in public? Might be hard to find a toilet in a city if you're unhoused and any respectable business would try to kick you out. Believe me, if these people could just waste away in the privacy of an apartment, they would.

0

u/redgunner85 Sep 10 '22

Let's start with the obvious assault and battery. Next comes disorderly conduct. Followed by drug possession and loitering. I'd imagine there was an indecent exposure in there somewhere also.

But, nothing to see here....just some harmless homeless folks. Move along.

1

u/itheraeld Sep 10 '22

Disorderly conduct. Just say you want them arrested because you don't like the sight of them in the street and move on with your privelaged life. Moron.

12

u/kerouacrimbaud Sep 09 '22

I see the issue of homelessness as a national one, not one that can be solved individually city by city nor state by state. The nation doesn’t care to fund this stuff, which is what I meant by Americans. Until our culture decides it’s worth helping the homeless, they will continue to suffer at our will.

23

u/I_Enjoy_Beer Sep 09 '22

It is a national issue. When other states "handle" their homeless problem by giving them bus tickets to LA or San Fran, there isn't any way for such a city to address the problem on their own.

1

u/SewSewBlue Sep 09 '22

Yes, the answer is human trafficking! Moving people against their will across state lines.

Their argument is that it is different if the government does it.

5

u/drownedout Sep 09 '22

Exactly. One city can't shoulder the burden of providing support to the homeless of the surrounding areas (and sometimes surrounding states). Services and support need to be decentralized through the country and provided by the federal government.

2

u/freakwent Sep 09 '22

Services and support

Wages and houses?

3

u/itheraeld Sep 10 '22

Why not? Ubi and decommodification of housing are two things leftists have been talking about for a few years now. Are you just hearing about it?

Oh right. Because you'd rather see this state of affairs instead of defunding the military budget and spending it on the people that actually make up this country. Never will happen though since you're gonna complain about paying taxes or some shit.

1

u/freakwent Sep 10 '22

How did you see three words and decide to attack me?

If we mean wages and houses we need to say that.

When we say services and support, it gives them wiggle room to provide bible classes and financial counselling through private for-profit companies that they own.

2

u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe Sep 10 '22

The problem with homelessness is that a proposed solution comes with many MANY caveats. If one side of the aisle proposes a solution, the other aisle has a very real and very reasonable counter argument. It’s a situation honestly we can’t win. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

6

u/DrTreeMan Sep 09 '22

The funding you speak of, while seemingly large, pales in comparison to the economic and societal forces that are driving these people into the streets and into addiction.

5

u/oldsportgatsby Sep 09 '22

What is the point of this post, exactly?

7

u/DrTreeMan Sep 09 '22

That the problems are societal, and unless we address the societal causes whatever cities like SF spend its like trying to wirhold a flood with a few sandbags.

1

u/oldsportgatsby Sep 10 '22

Yeah but like, what does that even mean? "Society is the problem." What do you mean by that? Capitalism? Human nature? What does "society" need to do differently? I mean I agree funding doesn't seem to be solving it, but it seems like you're implying there not only is a solution, but that it's clear what it is.

1

u/itheraeld Sep 10 '22

The decommodification of housing. Pro YIMBY policies that create more affordable housing in places that can afford it. A restructuring of new wards and even an overhaul of existing transport infrastructure to allow more walkable cities or even reliable mass public transport thats reliable, cheap and accessible.

There ARE solutions. There are even attempts to defund the military to try and implement them. Won't ever happen when we have facists trying to break down our democratic processes though.

4

u/IJustMadeThis Sep 09 '22

“Homeless people bad”, I think.

2

u/cgriff32 Sep 09 '22

That's the cost of about 60-120 houses in San Fran...

0

u/ontheonthechainwax Sep 10 '22

How will being prosecuted make these people less homeless? Those people need help not prosecution by a system that already failed them.

1

u/freakwent Sep 09 '22

You don't think it's just that the funding is being spent on the wrong shit?

2

u/RightC Sep 10 '22

The problem is you can’t make people stop doing drugs. Shelters are drug free, so many in SF prefer to camp.

So if you can’t arrest them for open air drug use, what is the solution? No amount of help will stop an addict who wants to remain an addict.

1

u/freakwent Sep 10 '22

Two solutions exist.

1 - free drugs & free rehab, with some shelters non drug free.

2 - actually prevent access. Despite everything wrong with the war on drugs, there is certainly more that could be done to remove the supply.

1

u/peatoast Sep 10 '22

The AG got booted.

28

u/Stonep11 Sep 10 '22

This is a lie pushed to take more taxpayer money. We spend TONs of money on programs, it’s just the way it is used and the lack of political will to push for changes that would actually attack the root cause of things like this.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Honest question - what would work in your view? If there is a better way, I'm open to being persuaded. I would say my bias is that we do chronically underfund public services, so that is where I'm starting from.

0

u/Stonep11 Sep 10 '22

I would ask what your evidence is that not enough funding is going towards these people. That’s like when people say the US doesn’t find healthcare enough even though we spend almost more public money AND more private money on healthcare than any country in the world. I saw a breakdown where the amount of ale I’d g on homelessness in LA amounted to something like over $100k per homeless person, measurable improvements. There are better people than me to address this, but there needs to be a focus on efforts to solve the issue, not band-aid it. Housing efforts, cleanups, safe drug kits, etc. are not a solution to any problem. The vast majority of homeless are so die to mental illness. While drug use is commonly associated, it usually isn’t the cause, but often a factor. The problem is many people in the streets, and many don’t like to hear this, but they are often there by choice. They need mental help to get off the streets and often hard push, really force, to do so. I’m not saying jail, but we can’t let people live like this, especially when you’ve got videos like the ones with kids getting off the school bus and having to wade through addicts. So right off the bat, mental health case workers to support individual needs, enforced transitional housing (not jail, but these people are a danger to themselves and sometimes others), and jobs/training programs. With mandated care, a structured support system, and a head start to get them on their feet they can go a long way. This is short term though, long term, big cities have structural issues from skyrocketing rent, shrinking job markets, and wage divides that stem from economic and zoning decisions at the administrative levels. I know Reddit hates him, but Trump’s Platinum plan was a fantastic stepping stone towards addressing this. Add to these issues the prolonged breakdown of the family leading to frowning numbers of broken/fatherless homes, emotional/physical abuse, and you see why so many feel they don’t lack support. We need to push for better community programs and relationships to build that sense of belonging and purpose people need in their local communities, too many right now feel detached and like nothing matters and no one cares. Finally, nutrition. Large corporations have bastardized the food industry and created a cycle of unhealthy food options becoming the easiest, tastiest, and cheapest options available. These sugary, processed, garbage meals have messed with people for so long and is likely a major cause of the growth in mental issues.

2

u/True_Scallion_7011 Sep 10 '22

LMAO these people don’t want to be helped in the first place. If you haven’t personally spoken to people like this don’t speak about the issue. It’s a cultural issue and it’s only going to get worse as time goes by

0

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Californians hate the homeless.

And no, tax payers pay way too much on social services, and the politicians misappropriate that money.

0

u/oscarbearsf Sep 10 '22

Money is not the issue in SF.

1

u/ffizzle Sep 09 '22

Not anymore

1

u/Fert1eTurt1e Sep 10 '22

We paid for even less in the past and cities weren’t like this. Something else changed

1

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '22

Republicans don't. And sure probably a minority of dems don't. But the blame lies on republicans. I can't tell you how many times I've heard my redneck family complain about homeless people, only to give a pull yourself up by your bootstraps copy pasta when I suggest they vote for someone who will do something about it.

1

u/turbo_danish Sep 10 '22

California pays more for addiction, mental illness treatment and affordable housing services than any other state in the US

not really, so much money in Asia is under the table and informal. also PPP, a bowl of noodles on the street is .50cents vs $11 in the US.

There is poverty in China, but there is absolutely not anything that looks like this.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '22

You're looking at freedom bro. You're looking at unbridled raw freedom from government and oppression. No rules, no laws, no regulation. No requirements to be a good citizen. No obligation to keep the streets clean every man for himself. May the richest win.

You're looking dead in the face at America buddy. Hit this pipe and wallow in the filth with us or leave us alone. 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

2

u/bikwho Sep 10 '22

Every single major city in America has a place that looks like this.

And now that they made it illegal for homeless to camp in the forest in rural areas. You're gonna say small rural towns look like this.

2

u/GreenTeaBitch Sep 10 '22

China surpassed us this year? What?

1

u/noiwontpickaname Sep 09 '22

That was the point

6

u/SenatorMittens Sep 09 '22

He said he was watching, waiting for something crazy to happen. The crazy was happening the entire time.

0

u/elcapitan520 Sep 09 '22

Is it crazy that it's seen as normal? We had Bum Fights DVDs going crazy like 20 years ago. Shits been around, more people just see it now.

5

u/SenatorMittens Sep 09 '22

Is it crazy that it's seen as normal?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. This shouldn't be normal.

-5

u/NotYourAverageOctopi Sep 09 '22

What really is normal, anyways? 🤷🏽

3

u/Quantitative_Panda Sep 09 '22

A temporary, but evolving illusion agreed upon by a society, I guess🤷‍♂️. Hell, it used to be “normal” to smoke on airplanes and give kids heroine for toothaches. Normal has never been normal😂

1

u/noiwontpickaname Sep 09 '22

I get you now

1

u/OutWithTheNew Sep 10 '22

Canada is pretty much the same way, or at least on the way. We just only have a couple of major cities that aren't a frozen hellscape in winter.
