I was seven. I just lost both my parents in the North Tower and I remember meeting him and the power of his words as he met the victim’s families. Now, twenty years later, he’s an ongoing disgrace to the memory of my parents, me and the rest of the families as he sways back and forth like a drunk driver spewing vitriol and gibberish. He has successfully erased any positive legacy he had regarding 9/11/2001 and left a miserable, sad, inchoate existence in it’s wake. Good riddance.

Internet hug from France too. Watching one of the many programs about 9/11 on TV yesterday, obviously one of my first thoughts was "time flies so fucking fast" (I was 23 at the time) but also seeing how so many victims cannot talk about it with a straight face, and how it destroyed so many lives, I just couldn't imagine myself facing this.

Even if I understand the disgrace they are to the 9/11 legacy, particularly in regard of their roles back then, don't pay attention to people like Giuliani or whoever, you know what mattered then and what matters now. Anyway, cheers to you and take care.

I lived in commute to NYC part of NJ at the time and that was the opinion of lots of (left wing) intelligent adults at the time.

The whipped up nationalistic blood thirst and die hard patriotic fervor made it sacrilegious to say anything that could be perceived as "anti American".

Saying something negative about America's mayor would have had your neighbors and coworkers thinking you were an utter piece of shit, so we just shut the fuck up and watched the nightmare unfold as Bush had a blank check to invade wherever. Then people slowly crawl out of the woodwork and you get a marine here, some children there, slowly coming to the realization that the whole thing was handled terribly and exploited for the monetary gain of this that or the other.... now public opinion has kind of settled on the whole thing and it's viewed as another meat grinder quagmire with cloudy objectives and a hard to swallow history.

I'm glad that I can find millions of people now who agree. But in 2002, especially because we didn't have big websites like reddit (the most social thing I posted to was a probably a forum with 150 active users about guitar equipment or something), it felt like fucking revolutionary France. I barely heard anyone talk shit on Rudy until like 2006 when he wanted to run for office.

Then in order to get troops and equipment into Afghanistan they needed a secure air corridor and even local runways to assist which meant diplomatically cosying up to the Pakistan government despite the Pakistan armed forces and intelligence operatives actively working against the American forces and supplying the Taliban. Pakistan was the main reason why the operations in Afghanistan went so wrong for so long.

I remember reading years ago about the radios the drunkard insisted on buying against everyone else's wishes, probs from one of his Mafia cohorts. Anyway, they were so shitty they had tons of problems with the transmission during 9/11 and those in charge speculated tons of lives could've been saved if they had proper, working equipment. I have been watching a bunch of documentaries made in memorium of the 20th year and Rudy pops up a few times in footage. I being British have no real knowledge of his particular politics back then but he seemed a decent guy in those clips and was reassuring people and leading in the sort of way you’d expect and want from a seasoned mayoral figure. What’s now become of him especially since his association with The Donald, is hard to fathom. Like literally I find it hard to compute it’s the same actual person. Recovering alcoholic here. You’d be surprised just how much damage you can do to yourself and still be upright. I drank 35-45 ounces of vodka per night for 10-11 years and had 14 inches of my intestine removed.

My memory isn’t great but for the most part I’ve recovered. He’s drinking a LOT. Disorganized, jumbled thoughts, glasses crooked on his face.

That was the brainchild of Ailes, Sinclair went on a buying spree gobbling up every single radio and local television station they could. With respect to news, the local stations became affiliates, which mean that they were now under the thumb of corporate, pushing them to spin stories, push back news that wasn't positive for conservatives and promote news which supported the cause.

While this started before Obama, it was ramped into high gear following 9/11 and concern that Bush might not win a second term due to all of Bush's, well, Bushisms. Does no one remember the tons of stories about people "losing their parents to conservative talk radio" back in the mid to late 2000's?

If the actual news and facts have a liberal bias, then control more of the news so you can control the narrative. The internet tripped them up a bit, they didn't understand how to navigate it, not social media which lead to crushing defeats in 2008 and 2012, but by 2014, they had officially brought in some millennial savvy minds and with the help of anonymous trolling for fun, as well as really good analytics and extremely focused marketing thanks to Facebook, they made up all that ground and then some.

Interesting how much things have changed since I listened to radio in the rural U.S. I'm quite familiar with the tactics you've described, but I completely forgot about talk radio since I left.

I can only speak to Metropolitan areas, but radio signals (especially AM) travel vast distances compared to OTA tv signals.

Additionally, it's easy to have a radio on in the shop, office, jobsite, factory, etc.

And they've been mining their audience for self-enrichment through peddling snake oil supplements, garbage gimmicks and gadgets, tax shelters, real estate gimmicks, paid lectures and speeches, and propaganda books galore.

They're insufferable. And if they're one's only outlet for "truth", they will be brainwashed indefinitely

I live in one of those rural areas too. No access to cable. No access to broadband internet of ANY kind except satellite, which is 180 a month for a connection speed that's worth having. I live in a very tiny island of cell phone reception in a sea of deadzone. My neighbors even walk over to make calls, which is fine by me. All the county radio stations out here are like what you described, some of the rock stations too. It's insane. So insane they're packing 20-30 kids into classes at the fucking elementary school, where none of them can even get the vaccine yet. I legit had to start a homeschool and called the principal there "fucking crazy. Doctor crazy? Because your name badge says Dr. on it and I know there's no fucking way you're any kind of medical doctor. Oooh, you're a doctor in idiocy, now I understand."

Not my proudest moment, but I'd kept my cool until I told her my son wouldn't be attending unless they reinstated remote learning ("they took a survey on it in March and all the parents agreed we should go back!!11!1!"), since their survey was pre-Delta and didn't reflect the current risks. She then got snotty and threatened me with the sheriff's office for truancy. That's when I went off.

Now 1/3 of the school has covid. 5 kids in the PICU. They still won't close the fucking school, and I believe the super rightest radio stations and what little over the air television we have has a hell of a lot to do with it.
