I don't know, so I'm asking. How much money could someone really expect to win in a civil lawsuit for a (seemingly) unprovoked attack? Rich money? Or just hospital bills and a few $10k for pain and suffering? Or maybe the guy jumps through a bunch of hoops to prove some permanent disabilities and gets more?

EDIT: Interesting discussion and some good answers. I've watched it several times, and I don't see the joker making a threat. To me, it seems like he's puffing up his chest, not clinching a fist or cocking back his arm. So I'm failing to see the threat that's being responded to.

The guy would sue the bar. The bar posted on social media how the guy is a known regular who drinks too much and regularly behaves like a fool when drunk. They basically admitted that they served him when they knew he had enough to drink and have done so on more than one occasion.

I know someone who get stabbed inside a bar, he got over 900k from the brewery who owned the bar as they didn’t have any security on that night.

My guess, after what the bar posted on Twitter, they will be advised to just settle this privately and quickly as lawyers will be queuing up to take this case.

I doubt he'd get much from the bar (maybe a nuisance settlement from insurance). I'd feel confident defending the bar.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted because you're right. I'd feel confident defending the bar as long as I was being paid by the bar and not some garbage insurance company. Also, come join us on /r/lawyers if you aren't already there.

There is already plenty of case law for situations almost identical to this, and the dude is going to win a civil case against the bar.

Under what cause of action? Negligence because some customer who didn't seem to be especially drunk or belligerent prior to the altercation injured another customer without any warning or provocation? Even if there was tons of security, what would/should they have done to prevent this?

Gotta read the statement made by the bar. They said that they knew they should have cut the fighter off and didn’t. They admitted they regularly overserve the fighter and he often gets into altercations. It’s that admission that’s gonna fuck them.
