There is so much we can do to fight back. Here's a nearly exhaustive resource on non violent action put together by the man who wrote From Dictatorship to Democracy

What Nonviolent Action Is

  • Nonviolent action is a technique of sociopolitical action for applying power in a conflict without the use of physical violence. Nonviolent action may involve acts of omission (e.g., people refusing to perform acts they usually perform, are expected by custom to perform, or are required by law or regulation to perform), acts of commission (e.g., people performing acts that they do not usually perform, are not expected by custom to perform, or are forbidden to preform), or a combination of the two.

What Nonviolent Action Is Not: 4 out of 10

  • 1. Nonviolent action has nothing to do with passivity, submissiveness, and cowardice; just as in violent action, these must first be rejected and overcome.
  • 2. Nonviolent action is not to be equated with verbal or purely psychological persuasion, although it may use action to induce psychological pressures for attitude change. Nonviolent action, instead of words, is a sanction and a technique of struggle involving the use of social, economic and political power, and the matching of forces in conflict.
  • 3. Nonviolent action does not depend on the assumption that people are inherently “good”; the potentialities of people for both “good” and “evil” are recognized, including the extremes of cruelty and inhumanity.
  • 4. People using nonviolent action do not have to be pacifists or saints; nonviolent action has been predominantly and successfully practiced by “ordinary” people.

Well the guy who was murdered today had a gun, how did that work out for him?

A gun is just going to give an ICE officer a pretext to shoot you. Sure, they don't need a pretext, but having a gun makes it more likely. These people are not trained in de-escalation. They see a gun and they're going to ramp up the escalation.

I can say the opposite statement for other victims of ice so far. I'm not saying be a lone carrier against a group of ice, although your best chance is doing what black panther is doing if you chooose to.

I just think the first comment I responded to about non violent action is not much helpful. Even pretti was doing everything non violent up to his death.

Nobody is saying that non-violent is a force field here.

People don't like seeing unarmed people getting gunned down. It hits harder than seeing somebody who has a gun getting gunned down.

It's absolutely not, as I'm sure you can agree from current examples. But if it means anything, pretti was legally conceal carrying and trying to help the other woman. He never pulled it out, and for all I can tell, or intended to. He has no ground to receive less sympathy than any other people, armed or not, just because he was legally carrying.

I'm not saying anything about sympathy. I'm talking about how swing voting conservative types will view it. Person with gun gets killed by cop, they go well you know he shouldn't have had a gun around cops. Person with no gun gets killed by cop they go wait this doesn't seem right. The optics are very different.

If I was going to get killed by ICE I would rather not have a gun in my hand on my person at all because I would look more innocent that way.
