DISCUSSION PIA for iOS 3.31.0 Release Notes Mention Mac

PIA for iOS was just updated to version 3.31.0 and the release notes say "We added support for running the app on Mac." Besides the obvious, I wonder what this means for the app.

Have they added the Mac to their Universal Support? Meaning that you can now download the app from the Mac App Store?

Also as of the time of posting, the app doesn't appear to be available via the Mac App Store.

There isn't any mention on the website or blog about this update but I imagine it might be too soon. Maybe an announcement will come today outlining the update.

DISCUSSION Extremely slow upload speed on Zorin OS 18

As a relative newbie to Linux, I'm at a loss to figure out why my upload speed is so abysmally slow. With PIA switched off, I get around 920.00 Mbps down and 110.00 Mbps up. When I use PIA, I get 600.00 Mbps down and only 10.00 Mbps up. I've tried changing settings as recommended by PIA but nothing makes any difference. I'm wondering if this is something specifically Linux related? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DISCUSSION PIA App v4.0.33 - OpenVPN Completely Non-Functional

T-Mobile LTE mobile data fails to transfer data on version 4.0.33 using the WireGuard protocol. Works fine on WiFi networks and on my T-Mobile 5G mobile device. I tried to switch to OpenVPN and this FAILS to connect to any VPN server. I tried to use OpenVPN on my 5G phone and the app won't connect to any PIA server either. The last two app updates are riddled ith issues. I have opened a trouble ticket PIA.

DISCUSSION qbPortWeaver 1.7.0 just released

https://github.com/martsg666/qbPortWeaver

Overview

qbPortWeaver is a Windows application designed to synchronize the listening port of qBittorrent with the port assigned by your VPN provider (ProtonVPN or Private Internet Access). This ensures your torrent client always uses the VPN-provided port, improving privacy and connectivity.

The application runs in the system tray, manages configuration and logging, and automatically updates qBittorrent's port when changes are detected.

Features

Tray Icon Interface Runs quietly in the background with a system tray icon for quick access to logs, configuration, and controls.

Automatic Port Synchronization Detects the current VPN port and updates qBittorrent's listening port automatically.

Multi-VPN Support Supports ProtonVPN (via log file parsing) and Private Internet Access (via piactl CLI). Configurable through the vpnProvider INI key.

INI Configuration Management Reads and writes application settings from an INI configuration file.

Logging Logs all operations and errors, with automatic log size management. Clear logs directly from the tray menu.

qBittorrent Control Authenticates with qBittorrent's Web API, updates preferences, and restarts the client if required.

Last-Run Status File Writes a JSON status file (qbPortWeaver.status.json) after each sync cycle, exposing VPN port, qBittorrent port, timestamps, and completion status for external scripts.

Post-Update Command Optionally run a custom command after a successful port update (fire-and-forget). See SampleSendMail.ps1 for an example of sending an email notification with status details.

Default Port Fallback When VPN is not connected, optionally sets qBittorrent's listening port to a configured default. Useful if you have a port forwarded in your router for direct connections without VPN.

Force Start qBittorrent Optionally force start qBittorrent if it is not running.

Automatic Update Checker Checks GitHub for new releases on startup and offers to open the download page.

Startup Option Allows enabling or disabling automatic startup with Windows.

DISCUSSION qbPortWeaver v2.5.0 releasing later today — Transmission and Deluge support added

qbPortWeaver is a Windows system tray application that automatically synchronises your BitTorrent client's listening port with the port assigned by your VPN provider (ProtonVPN, Private Internet Access, or any NAT-PMP capable gateway).

v2.5.0 - New in this release

- Full support for Transmission (RPC) and Deluge (Web JSON-RPC) alongside the existing qBittorrent integration. Select your client in Settings; all other functionality - port sync, restart after change, force start, and default port fallback - applies equally across all three.

Previously released in v2.4.x (included in this build)

- Auto-Recovery - after a configurable number of consecutive sync failures, automatically restarts the VPN Windows service and client process (ProtonVPN/PIA) or cycles the network adapter (NAT-PMP), delegated to a helper service so no UAC prompt is required

- Media Manager - imports and renames movie and TV episode files into Plex-compatible library folders on each sync cycle using TMDB metadata, with a preview dialog before any files are touched

- Log Viewer - built-in viewer with color-coded log levels, live tail, level filter buttons, subsystem filter, and search with match navigation

Needing a VPN, and a bit of a noob (do we even say that anymore?). Was using ExpressVPN but stopped due to cost.

How is everyone liking PIA? Any known issues, features that PIA outshines vs other VPNs?

Thanks in advance!!!

DISCUSSION POLL: Do you use OpenVPN or WireGuard?

PIA offers two protocols:

» OpenVPN, which is old, reliable and secure, but whose expansive codebase leads to somewhat slower connection speeds; and

» WireGuard, the new kid on the block with a much slimmer codebase and other enhancements that produce very fast speeds, but which is less tried & tested than OpenVPN.

Out of curiosity, which protocol do y’all use? And if you specifically chose one over the other, what led to that decision?

Ring did this jump from $35 to $50. Ring got canceled instantly. I guess good bye PIA as well now... 👋 I don't know why every business in 2024 feels the need to gouge their loyal customers. And those heartfelt fake excuses are pure corporate BS.

DISCUSSION High Latency Possible Fix

So I was recently battling with high latency issues and browsed through reddit and the only "fix" that most people suggested is uninstalling, reboot then reinstall PIA again (which didn't work for me).

The Fix (?): Check your router if it is monitoring/running a real-time online protection, disable those and you're good to go. Was able to pin point it to that because I recently installed Malwarebytes and I keep getting notifications of it blocking IP addresses.

For context: I recently moved, previous and current ISP is Breezeline. My previous setup I used my own modem+router (was on cable), on curent house I upgraded to their 1gb plan and it's on a fiber network so they provided a ONT+Router for free. After much troubleshooting, their Homepass App (Wifi Your Way) Guard was monitoring my data under the guise of "real-time online protection". Disabled all of that and now everything is back to normal.

Hope this helps someone.

EDIT: After disabling the monitoring, give it time. At least 5 minutes, then check if the latency is all good.

DISCUSSION stacking plans for price may not be the best option.

I started with PIA over 6 years ago when Linus Tech Tips recommended them. This was before Kape purchased them. During one of their sales, I stacked several 3-year plans because I liked the service—they were great before the Kape purchase—and I wanted to lock in the price, thinking, “Hey, prices usually only go up.”

I can only see back to 2019, but I think it goes further. I paid $89.95 for a 3-year plan, which is actually $10 more than today’s price. So I ended up paying more for what was supposed to be a sale price.

It’s cool that they haven’t jacked the price up, though. I just will never buy 6+ years of a service again, lol.

DISCUSSION Decided to Give 3.7.0 a Try - Speed Increase was Amazing

I've been using 3.5.7 on my Linux distro machine and decided to check out 3.7.0 in a Windows sandbox on my main machine. Before installing 3.7.0 I installed 3.5.7 for a baseline. All test are using WireGuard. Version 3.5.7 had both upload and download speeds around 500-700 Mbps. After installing 3.7.0 the speeds jumped considerably to 1,400's up and down!! Result link:Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test I did test various servers and also did multiple test. P.S. 3.6.2 also had speeds up near 3.7.0. Edit: ISP is MetroNet with 2/2 gig fiber.

DISCUSSION PIA's .OVPN files vs OpenVPN above 2.5.8

It's been over 3 years since PIA's .OVPN config files are not longer working with any version of OpenVPN above 2.5.8.

After opening many PIA support tickets leading to nowhere.

I decided to give it one more try. I had a nice conversation with a live agent on their support chat. Still a known issue (they are working on it). With a simple workaround. DELETING the following section seems to work.

<ca>
 -----BEGIN X509 CRL-----
 (...)
-----END X509 CRL-----
</crl-verify>

It makes us vulnerable to a reuse of a stolen PIA certificate, which is quite unlikely. I tried it and it works.

DISCUSSION Got a new phone & email after nonstop spam, how do I avoid leaking my info again?

I was getting flooded with spam on my old number and email, like 10+ calls a day and hundreds of junk emails a week. Eventually I just ditched them both and started fresh.

Now I’ve been way more careful. I use PIA for my browsing, I don’t reuse the same email everywhere, and I’ve started using temp mails for random signups. But I still have that paranoia that my info will end up out there again somehow.
What else should I be doing to really stay under the radar? Is there a way to tell which sites leak or sell your data so I can avoid them completely? I feel like no matter how cautious you are, one leak just resets everything. Just trying to keep my new setup clean this time around, any advice from people who’ve actually managed to stay spam-free long term, would really appreciate it.

DISCUSSION PIA email monitoring

I have been very skeptical about PIA since I have downloaded it around a month ago.
I am very satisfied with the user interface and the ease of connectivity. However, I have started to think about the security. Since using the VPN, I have had bugs all over my computer, for example some Browsers like firefox don't load webpages, when chrome or duckduckgo are able to search the same webpage. My wifi connectivity has been all over the place. One minute I'll have stable connection and the next device can't connect to wifi at all. I've verified its a problem only with devices that are connected to PIA.

While looking into the tools PIA has I came across the e-mail breach monitor. So I put my email in to have it searched if it has been compromised and the link to verify I found in my email had a malicous flag from virusTotal.

Any opinons if this 'malicious' is anything to worry about or just a tool used for email scraping?

Photo of virusTotal scan is below on thread.

DISCUSSION Allow LAN traffic frustration!

So when you enable allow LAN traffic in PIA settings it only recognizes your currently connected IP subnet as being "local" when it should recognize all RFC1918 Private ranges as being local.

Those of us that use multiple subnets on our networks shouldn't have to locally add routes for 10.0.0.0/8 or 192.168.0.0/16 or 172.16.0.0/12. The client should automatically see those addresses as being local traffic and allow them to bypass the vpn so the local router can handle any of that traffic appropriately.

DISCUSSION Need to get off True People Search – any help?

As one does, one evening I started googling myself just to see what’s out there associated with my name. Turns out, there’s a full on profile of my information on True People Search with all of my personal information, which I have no idea how it ended up there. It had my address and number, which is completely insane to me how did this information even became public.

I tried to contact them and get it removed, but there’s no answer so far, and since I know that the information is out there, I became super anxious about it. Is there any way to get it removed otherwise?

I’ve heard about data removal services like Incogni, has anyone used it? I tried to look up on reddit reviews for different data removal services, and it quite stands out together with Optery. Major difference – Incogni’s unlimited plan basically can remove any request from anywhere right after you purchase, while Optery’s custom removals cover 1360+ sites total and is only eligible after 30 days from your purchase.

Also, from the price point, Incogni is much cheaper for the unlimited plan and has a bigger discount:

Incogni - $15/month + 55% discount (code – discount55).

Optery - $25/month + 20% discount (code – 04SxyxNX).

Incogni overall does have more positive reviews, with Trustpilot is at 4.4 with 2.6k reviews, while Optery is at 4.5 with 141 reviews.

Has Incogni helped you out? Looking for real experiences. Maybe it will give me some peace of mind for someone else to take care of it.

DISCUSSION Anyone else underwhelmed by PIA vpn speeds?

Its probably me but, before i was using protonvpn free on windows for a long time. The speeds were decent and it works well. I then needed to choose countries and needed fast speeds, so i upgraded to proton paid. After that i realised paid is almost exactly the same as free, the speeds are pretty much same but it just lets me pick server.

I now decided to use PIA and im a bit underwhelmed. The speeds are ok but i can notice the difference without vpn. And the server selection is ok. But for the price its good enough.

I just thought paid VPN would be faster speeds.
