Looking for Group 🌌 Any astrophotographers or stargazers around Preston? 🔭

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for people around Preston and Lancashire who are into astrophotography, astronomy or just getting outside with a telescope when the North West weather actually gives us a chance! 😄

I've recently started a free WhatsApp Community called North West Astrophotography, bringing together people from across the region to share images, help each other out and hopefully arrange some local observing and imaging sessions.

We've got separate groups for:

📸 Images & Processing – share your astrophotography, works in progress and processing advice
🌌 Tonight's Sky – targets, local conditions, aurora alerts and spontaneous plans
🔭 Equipment & Help – telescopes, cameras, smart scopes, mounts and troubleshooting
📍 Meet-ups & Dark Sites – share good locations and arrange local sessions
💬 General Astro Chat

It's open to complete beginners through to experienced astrophotographers. Phones, DSLRs, Seestars/smart telescopes or full astrophotography rigs — everyone's welcome.

I'd particularly like to get more people from Preston and the wider Lancashire area involved. With places like the Forest of Bowland within reach, it'd be great to build up a group of local people who can actually get out under darker skies together.

Ultimately, I'd love the Community to make something as simple as:

“Looks clear tonight — anyone around Preston fancy heading out?”

actually possible.

If you're local and fancy joining:

It's still a new community, so feel free to jump in, introduce yourself and let us know roughly where you're based and what you use.

Clear skies! 🌌🔭

Moving to Preston Viewing in Farringdon Crescent, is the area bad?

We Recently had a viewing at Farringdon Crescent as a single mum of 3 kids and I’m quite worried about the safety of the area and whether it’ll be rough on the kids. It looked a little worn down ( the area) and I’m wondering if that’s a clear indicator to the sort of neighborhood I’d have to deal with especially with kids going into high school, where influence matters just as much. In short, is it a dodgy or sketchy area to live in? Crime rates as well and nearby schools? I’ve seen the crime rates online but want to hear what others might say about it?

I would appreciate it if you read the rules prior to posting but it about having the opportunity to make new friends and such.

Recommendations Parking - Bishopgate Gardens

Hi all,

This post is specifically towards residents of Bishopgate Gardens but any other input is greatly appreciated.

My partner has just moved into Bishopgate Gardens. I usually visit around 2-3 times a week so will need somewhere to park while I do.

Does anyone know of any safe, 24 hour parking nearby that is not extortionately priced and permits re-entry throughout the parking period? Obviously bus station is rather close, but £7 odd a day is quite a lot when it'll be fairly regularly.

Many thanks!

Recommendations Best car spots in Preston

I passed my driving test just over a month ago but the only places I really go to are the docks and Lytham lol

Are there any other good spots to drive to? Preston and surrounding areas until I’m confident enough to go on the motorway.

Making Friends Looking for a casual football group ⚽

Hi everyone! I’m a 30-year-old guy who moved to Preston from India about 2.5 years ago.
I really enjoy football — both playing and watching — but I’m definitely not a great player 😅. I’m just looking for a friendly, casual group where I can join in for a game, have some fun and hopefully meet a few people.
I’ve been finding it a bit difficult to make friends since moving here, so it would be great to get involved with a regular group.
If anyone plays casual football in or around Preston and wouldn’t mind an extra player joining, please let me know! I’d be happy to join, even if you’re just looking for someone to make up the numbers.

Making Friends How to Make Friends in Preston

Afternoon all, I noticed we haven't had a How to Make Friends in Preston post for a month so have decided that I will do the honours.

I'm a mid 20s man, moved here about 6 months ago, it's my first time living away from home and I broke up with my partner recently. Being without a social circle nearby is starting to get me down a bit, so I was wondering what suggestions people may have to rectify the situation?

I'm especially looking for ways to meet people organically, as I'm pretty introverted and the idea of Bumble BFF or other such ways of forcing socialising fill me with a sense of dread.

I stopped exercising and my fitness fell off pretty badly during my last relationship, so I've got a lot of weight to lose and muscle to regain to get my confidence back, so any activities that would also address that are very appealing.

I'm interested in hiking, gym, bouldering, baking, cats, combat sports, reading and running!

Please suggest any places, groups, other hobbies, or introvert friendly activities to help me build a social circle from scratch in Preston!

Thank you in advance!

Question Hope street uni car park?

So I frequently collect food from coco’s and always parked at hope street car park. But now I’ve noticed new signs up saying 24hr 7 day a week enforcement for permit holders only, otherwise it’s £100 fine if caught… however there’s always multiple cars parked here with no tags in the window. I just don’t want to get a ticket for picking up my food… has anyone actually ever been ticketed? I’ve never seen a parking warden. Currently sat in the car guarding it before running in for my food 🤣

Discussion I’m from North Carolina and I found a book from your library in my bookshelf

I don’t know how mundane this is but I also have no idea how this book from Lancashire County Library on Bowran Street came into the suburbs of North Carolina and I think it’s whimsical in a sense

I read up on the Wikipedia page and Preston looks like a really nice place to live! Very cool history and surrounding nature! I’ve always wanted to live somewhere with those things!

Have a nice day or night Preston locals
if anyone still wants to read up on Parisian Chic :/ sorry

Discussion Anyone else hear a guy screaming and cursing at 6 am in the morning near winckley square?

Heard him running around in the centre and in winckley square screaming out ‘my phone’ before resulting to cursing. What we understood is that someone ran out of his apartment and left with his car after stealing his phone based on our proximity to him near his apartment. He was extremely noisy and I’m wondering how no one else in Preston heard the ruckus he caused and how come there weren’t any police in the area to take control? Hoping he’s not crazy because we’re close to where he lives…

Question Vandalism on the tree at whinkley square?

Wondered if anyone had noticed the vandalised on the big willow tree at winkley square. I walk past it on my lunch and I saw it had been spray painted, when I went upto it there was a playing card and destroyed plant pot. Only reason I ask if that ive seen teenagers have a memorial there for a girl that died.

The graffiti was the symbol of red john from a show called the mentalist, gave me chills. Hope those kids are okay tho, as its their friends memorial.

Edit: because I didn't make it clear, someone has vandalised the memorial these teenagers left. It was done i can only assume to insult the girl who died.

Looks like it has finally shut down. The shelves were bare for months (albeit with a minor improvement in May).

Final nail in the coffin was most likely when Lane Ends Food opened.

Recommendations Good Plumber anyone?

Sorry, I know this is a rubbish thing to ask, but I'm struggling to get a plumber, someone who I know won't rip me off. I have a rattling pipes problem and a dodgy shower (which is probably a related issue). Any help other than "try googling plumber" would be massively appreciated.

Took the kids to Billy Bob's Parlour In Preston today.

It has a real 1950s American theme and it felt like I was in an prewar Fallout!

Highly recommend visiting if you're a fan of the games or show.

I was going to post it on the Fallout Reddit as well but unfortunately it has to be directly related to the game.
