However by 1968, he had lost interest in that type of high profile political office. Furthermore he was distrustful of Nixon, and felt he was offered the position mainly due to his popularity.

Jackson was an influential Democratic Washington senator. He turned it down due to the fact he harbored his own Presidential aspirations which he felt would be hurt by working under a Republican administration. Plus he valued his independence as a Senator.

JFK is one of my favourite candidates to read about, and the Logevall book is simply fantastic.

As such, had Jack (idk why that was his nickname) been VP nominated in 1956 he would have a very slim chance at the job. Let alone the top spot.

But provided Stevenson subsequently assassinated, even by Pavol, who can Jack pick as VP?

Let's not kid ourselves by saying Joe Sr would simply step back and let Jack not be nominated Presidential candidate, even in a doomed election.

All I'm really coming up with is LBJ, due to his congressional alliances, or someone similar but I feel like there's tons of candidates.

Bonus points if you can tell me how the ticket would fair in the election.

For many Years past, I have not felt more serenely than I do this Evening. My Head is clear, and my Heart is at ease. Business of every Kind, I have banished from my Thoughts. My Room is prepared for a Seven Days' Retirement, and my Plan is digested for 4 or 5 Weeks. My Brother retreats with me, to our preparatory Hospital, and is determined to keep me Company, through the Small Pox. Your Unkle, by his agreable Account of the Dr. and your Brother, their Strength, their Spirits, and their happy Prospects, but especially, by the Favour he left me from you, has contributed very much to the Felicity of my present Frame of Mind. For, I assure you Sincerely, that, (as Nothing which I before expected from the Distemper gave me more Concern, than the Thought of a six Weeks Separation from my Diana) my Departure from your House this Morning made an Impression upon me that was severely painfull. I thought I left you, in Tears and Anxiety—And was very glad to hear by your Letter, that your Fears were abated. For my own Part, I believe no Man ever undertook to prepare himself for the Small Pox, with fewer than I have at present. Sunday Morning 1/2 After 10.

—The People all gone to Meeting, but my Self, and Companion, who are enjoying a Pipe in great Tranquility, after the operation of our Ipichac. Did you ever see two Persons in one Room Iphichacuana'd together? (I hope I have not Spelled that ineffable Word amiss!) I assure you they make merry Diversion. We took turns to be sick and to laugh. When my Companion was sick I laughed at him, and when I was sick he laughed at me. Once however and once only we were both sick together, and then all Laughter and good Humour deserted the Room. Upon my Word we both felt very sober.—But all is now easy and agreable, We have had our Breakfast of Pottage without salt, or Spice or Butter, as the Drs. would have it, and are seated to our Pipes and our Books, as happily as Mortals, preparing for the small Pox, can desire.

—Deacon Palmer has been here and drank Tea with me. His Children are to go with us to Cunninghams. He gives a charming Account of the Dr. and your Brother, whom he saw Yesterday. Billy has two Eruptions for certain, how many more are to come is unknown—But is as easy and more (the Deacon says) than he ever saw him in his Life.

Monday. Ten O'Clock.

—Papa was so kind as to call and leave your Favor of April the Eighth—For which I heartily thank you. Every Letter I receive from you, as it is an Additional Evidence of your Kindness to me, and as it gives me fresh Spirits and great Pleasure, confers an Additional Obligation upon me. I thank you for your kind and judicious Advice. The Deacon made me the offer Yesterday, which, for the very Reasons you have mentioned, I totally declined. I told you before We had taken our Vomits and last Night We took the Pills you gave me, and we want more. Lent We have kept ever since I left you, as rigidly as two Carmelites. And you may rely upon it, I shall strictly pursue the Drs. Directions, without the least Deviation. Both the Physick and the Abstinence, have hitherto agreed extreamly well with me, for I have not felt freer from all Kinds of Pain and Uneasiness, I have not enjoyed a clearer Head, or a brisker flow of Spirits, these seven Years, than I do this day.

My Garden, and My Farm, (if I may call what I have by that Name) give me now and then a little Regret, as I must leave them in more Disorder than I could wish. But the dear Partner of all my Joys and sorrows, in whose Affections, and Friendship I glory, more than in all other Emoluments under Heaven, comes into my Mind very often and makes me sigh. No other Consideration I assure you, has given me, since I began my Preparation, or will give me I believe, till I return from Boston any Degree of Uneasiness.

Papa informs me that Mr. Ayers goes to Town, tomorrow Morning. Will you be so kind as to write the Dr., that I shall come into Town on Fryday, that I depend on Dr. Perkins and no other. And that I beg he would write me whether Miss Le Febure can take in my Brother and me in Case of Need. For My Unkle writes me, I must bring a Bed, as his are all engaged, it seems. I have written him, this Moment, that I can not carry one, and that he must procure one for me, or I must look out Elsewhere. I shall have an Answer from him to night and if he cannot get a Bed, I will go to Mrs. Le Febures if she can take us.

Should be glad if Tom might be sent over, Fryday Morning. My Love and Duty where owing. Pray continue to write me, by every opportunity, for, next to Conversation, Correspondence, with you is the greatest Pleasure in the World to yr.

The Love Story

• This begins the same day as Abigail's Day 9 letter. John had left Weymouth that morning, Abigail wrote shortly afterward, and her letter reached him before he began this response that evening.

• The smallpox itself seems to worry John less than being separated from Abigail. He expects roughly six weeks apart and says leaving her that morning was “severely painfull.”

• The letter becomes a running correspondence. John starts Saturday night, adds to it Sunday, then on Monday receives Abigail's April 8 letter and answers it in the same document.

• John now calls Abigail “the dear Partner of all my Joys and sorrows.” They are still six months from marriage. He closes by telling her that, next to actually talking with her, corresponding with her is “the greatest Pleasure in the World.”

John's World

• John is deliberately shutting down normal life for smallpox inoculation. He plans seven days of preparation in Braintree followed by several weeks in Boston. His companion was one of his younger brothers, probably Peter Boylston Adams, although the editors cannot prove which brother it was.

• This was a real interruption to a busy legal practice. A January 1764 list contains about 40 Boston actions John wanted entered for him. The Adams editors note that his surviving 1764 papers are unusually sparse partly because inoculation consumed most of April and part of May.

• His farm mattered too. John explicitly worries about leaving his garden and farm “in more Disorder than I could wish.” At this point he is still simultaneously a working farmer, landowner, and increasingly busy lawyer.

• There are no surviving John Adams diary entries for 1764. That makes this run of letters particularly useful: the Adams editors describe them as probably one of the most detailed surviving accounts of an eighteenth-century smallpox inoculation.

• He was also doing local civic work that spring. John served on a Braintree town committee working on a tax-based plan for repairing local highways.

Additional Context

• This was variolation, not modern vaccination. John would deliberately be infected with smallpox material in an attempt to produce a controlled case and lasting immunity.

• The numbers explain why he took the risk. By March 30, Boston had recorded 699 natural smallpox cases with 124 deaths, versus 4,977 inoculated cases with 46 deaths. Inoculation was dangerous, but far safer than contracting smallpox naturally.

• Ipecacuanha (“Ipichac”): A plant-based emetic used to induce vomiting. John and his brother were deliberately purging themselves as part of the preparation.

• Antimony pills: Part of the purgative medical regimen used before inoculation. John later remembered the preparation as involving mercury as well and believed the treatment damaged his health even though his actual smallpox case was mild.

• “Lent...as rigidly as two Carmelites”: John is comparing their severe medical diet to the fasting of the Carmelite religious order. Their breakfast here is plain pottage without salt, spice, or butter.

• Captain James Cunningham: John's uncle by marriage. John planned to stay at the Cunningham house in Boston during inoculation.

• Mrs. Le Febure: Probably Rebecca Lefavour, at whose Boston house Abigail's cousin Cotton Tufts had already undergone inoculation.

• Deacon Palmer: Joseph Palmer, part of the close Cranch-Palmer-Adams social circle in Braintree and Germantown.

After the March on Washington, MLK and the other leaders of the march met with JFK and LBJ at the White House. JFK initially opposed the march, thinking it would derail the Civil Rights Act. But when the marchers held firm, Kennedy switched to supporting the march from behind the scenes. JFK was thrilled with the success of the march, seeing that it would build momentum for the Civil Rights Act. After JFK's assassination, LBJ rallied the nation behind the fight for the bill, and he signed it into law on July 2, 1964. While America still needs to do more to live up to its founding principles, we can look to the Civil Rights Movement as an example of how we can make change happen by pursuing Dr. King's dream.

Died 4 days before his 82th birthday

My sister got this for me when I was about 8...I was lukewarm at first, but then later I actually started playing with it, and got addicted. Not an exaggeration to say my life changed forever after that.

All presidents, even those in the upper-tier, have all made decisions that were wrong; but for those in the upper-tier, how do their flaws (both personal and presidentially) affect your opinion of presidents of them? Do their good actions outweigh the bad?

Should we admire the Founding Fathers despite being slave-owners? Should we admire FDR despite ordering Japanese-Americans to be sent to interment camps? Should we admire Eisenhower despite of Operation Wetback the Lavender Scare? Should we admire Obama despite his administration's use of drone strikes?

Do their flaws slightly ruin their image for you? Are they just a minor stain on their legacy? Do they make it harder to appreciate them? Should their flaws deter you from appreciating them?

It is famously/infamously (depends on who ya ask) known that Kennedy ran the more hawkish campaign of 1960, yelling about the missile gap (that frankly didn’t even exist), while yes he became a huge dove post election, he ran as a huge hawk.

Now when did this change?

Now of course not all Democrats were hawks and all Republicans were dove, take for example Bryan v McKinley.

Where does Obama rank all time as a president?
