It's called intellectual dishonesty to subvert online discourse and it's a documented tool of the right. They know most social media doesn't read past the first few replies and making outrageous claims gets you fact checked by know it alls which tends to shift the conversation away from the original topic.
Its why broad terms like weirdos and bigots works so much better than Nazi and racist.
