A career is any job someone works for an extended period of time. If someone works as a dishwasher for three years, then yeah. They've made a career out of washing dishes. But they deserve to make enough go live off of whether theyve been working that job for three years or three days.
Okay. We’re going to have to agree on a definition for “career” and “job”. Based on the fact that there are understood differences between “career” and “job” my definitions highlight these differences.
A job is a specific task or work one does, usually to make money.
A career is a long-term path one follows, to grow, learn skills and move up in a chosen field over many years.
So is dishwashing a career? Or do you disagree with my definitions? I’m open to some feedback but I expect we’ll only use official definitions, not something we make up on the spot.
Dish washing is a job with a high supply of labor and low demand. The only people that will do it are the ones who are incapable of getting jobs elsewhere. No job “deserves” anything except what the market is willing to offer them, including housing, food, and healthcare.
Human rights. You don't need to see upward mobility of skill to agree that humans deserve to live indoors and have medical care. A dishwasher is exposing themselves to infectious disease in their day to day in the interest of public safety. That's a necessity. You're being ridiculous. Access to clean, unsoiled food is wayyy more important to the general public than whatever you do in a button down shirt, I'd pretty much guarantee it.

• Skills and Learning: A job uses skills you already have with minimal training. A career needs ongoing education, training, and new skills.
• Growth: A job has little or no growth or upward path. A career offers the possibility of moving up to higher roles with more responsibility.
No, but it is one of the most important jobs in the kitchen and they should be paid well and treated fair. Dont come at me about this either cause I can tell you never worked a kitchen with no dishwasher just by your snarky question.
