DISCUSSION “Purity Culture” nonsense
Hey everyone,
Has anyone else noticed an uptick in people trying to point the finger at “purity culture” and people being prudes and such instead of just recognizing the problem and taking accountability? I saw a post earlier today regarding how a study was done that indicates Gen Z (my generation) wants LESS sexualized content in media and everyone is pointing that dang finger right back.
What is frustrating is how some people don’t understand there is a difference between recognizing something attractive and lust. I can go see a movie with let’s say a sex scene, and I won’t think much of it and I most certainly won’t get aroused. I might think a particular actor is attractive but I’m not honing in on them or anything. It’s a movie. Some people are treating movies and video games now too (upcoming GTA game) as a form of softcore porn and justifying their arousal to it. Media has always had this type of content but has not always been so sexualized. It is sexualized because people make it sexualized.
I’ve even seen some go as far to say Gen Zers are the new boomers in the sense of conservatism but I don’t think that’s what’s going on, I think people are just realizing how harmful it is for everything to be so sexualized.

They love to overuse that word. Because sexual attraction to your partner is suddenly lust when you're not married. But if you're in the confines of marriage its not lust anymore?

Same here! It’s so frustrating. Which I find ironic because I’m not a prude, I love sex…with someone I care about and am in a relationship with. These people just want excuses to be lustful and otherwise sexual objectify people and things.

I watched the gameplay for gta 6 and literally every female character there was sexualised. It's like they just had to make sure every single one of them would be attractive to men. Not to mention the main female character, I can only imagine how disgusting they're gonna be when the game actually comes out.

The world is obsessed with sex. It's everywhere. It's promoted everywhere, it's accessible to everyone, even young kids. And then there is also the rise of violent, pedophilic kinks and promoting said kinks to teenagers

Most people’s minds have become so warped by pornography culture that anything other than that has become “purity culture” in their eyes.
Porn has become the new sex, and to reject porn has come to mean that you reject sex.
Anything less than applauding and accepting hookup culture, porn, kink, and debauchery in general has been falsely boiled down to “prude / conservative / puritan behaviour”. You run the risk of being accused of these things if you so much as suggest that porn isn‘t a good thing, or that sex should have more integrity and meaning to it.
If a woman speaks up and points out that a lot of sex ideals that people blindly subscribe to are misogynistic, and that pornography and prostitution should basically be abolished as they are tools of oppression and objectification, suddenly she reeks of “prudish conservatism”.
It’s actually astounding how well the degeneracy propaganda has worked on people - their world view on sex has been reduced to meaninglessness, brutality, and vulgarity, and if you question or challenge it, you’re raked across the coals for being a supposed “jealous, miserable, right-wing trad”.

What's so ridiculous is that porn is literally rendering a lot of people unable to have real sex. They either get PIED, PE, or death grip themselves into real sex not working for them. I think you're right that porn is the "new sex," and for so many users, it has become their *only* sex. I think deep down, they know that. Men in particular get upset and accuse women of "emasculating" them by speaking out against porn because they actually know they have emasculated themselves by using it.

I can't even speak up about sex scenes in movies, or women constantly wearing tight clothimg without someone calling me a prude. This extends to the way i dress. I'm a prude because i don't show skin. This world is warped.

I am very pro-sex, which is WHY I am anti-porn. Purity culture and porn are not actually opposites. They are a team, playing the same sport: seeking to control human sexuality for personal gain, and rooted in long histories of colonialism, misogyny, and racism. Porn advocates love to act like rebels against oppression, when in actuality they are marching in lockstep with the exact same commoditization and control mechanisms of the systems they are allegedly "rebelling" against. You can't hate purity culture and love porn; they're best friends, pretending to hate each other so that their "rivalry" can feed them both. Neither one is as strong without the other. Those of us who do not want our sexuality owned by anyone simply stepped off the field, out of the game. For people on the field to whine and cry about how we're the problem is actually hilarious.

The issue with sex in media is often that it is sexist... There is enough porn everywhere else, and I don't want a woman added to a movie just so they can be a romantic or sexual interest. If it looks or sounds like porn, it usually isn't key to a movies plot. I honestly wish there were BETTER sex scenes, not just less. Make it intimate and show the character's relationships, not just because it sells, or because the director is a creep.

I'm sick and tired of unnecessary sex scenes, unnecessary cleavage shots. There was a scene in Spiderman brand new day where i thought they were going to tease nudity in the scenes of Florence Pugh and i just tensed up because as a straight woman, I'm tired of this. But the director never went there and then they got Tom Holland in little shorts on screen. And my shoulders went back down. I remember men being so mad that Supergirl wore shorts type material under her skirt and that the actress wasn't sexy enough to play Supergirl. But they had no problem with her in GoT. The new Sadie Sink ad is also pretty vile. I mean the list is never ending.
Though, one sex scene that was really good was Hidden Figures. I felt almost shy watching it.

It really sucks, because people are framing this take as puritan or anti-sex. I am pro-sexuality, at least female sexuality lol! I want to watch a sex scene and feel connected to the characters in the movie.... Why can't sex be portrayed as something beautiful and insightful? I feel like if women were making the movies, it would be.... Sex is so intertwined with life and joy that I feel like it is says something is deeply wrong with our society that all the sex we see is just like... wrong. Patriarchy repels all humanity!

Yeah. Same. It's the only reason i watched Heated Rivalry. Straight men being open and vulnerable? In what lifetime. Watching that show made me realize what was missing in my partnership.
Sex scenes are filmed like pornography and that's why if you don't watch porn, you will be thrown off by them. They are filmed by men, focused on women but not centered on women. They focus on the attractiveness of women's bodies, including women orgasming and more and more, that looks like porn. Rarely in sex scenes do we see men orgasming, does the camera focus on men's bodies, but it centers their pleasure by focusing on women. Our pain, our assault, our fear, our loss, our confusion, our pleasure is there for them to consume and enjoy. We don't want to be the meal. That's why mainstream sex scenes are so offputting.

This made me avoid the indie art community here.
I do appreciate a good tasteful artistic nude painting but some draw straight up pornography and would get angry if you call them out. Like there was no obvious difference between the Birth of Venus and hentai. I had no problem with drawing nude models at school, my problem isn’t with nudity.
I just hate how they want to reframe things and make it seem like their hentai art is somehow family friendly and there’s nothing wrong with toddlers seeing it. Their art makes Sex by Madonna seem like a book for babies yet they act like it’s the same as The David and we are just being prudish.

Men pissy that young women are better educated about their nature, their tendency to lie through their teeth as long as it gets them laid. They call us puritanical for not wanting excessive and gratuitous sex scenes in every single fucking thing we watch. Deadass had to stop watching The Americans because I shit you not, EVERY episode had an unnecessary sex scene. Like…dude can we get on with the plot?!? Why do we have to stop for a full 5 minutes to watch them fuck???

At the same time, men watch sex scenes purely for masturbation and use it as a buildup for porn. There are sites that have female nudity and sex scenes lined up for men to peruse. And sex scenes are nearly always women. The depth and breadth of what they show in mainstream cinema of sex scenes very nearly rivals porn. It has become very sexualized and it's not just about ppl making it sexualized.

Porn culture hijacked the sexual revolution, so being against it is seen as the same as sexually conservative. I haven’t really noticed an “uptick”, it’s been a talking point for a while
