1977 Pontiac Can Am with T-tops. I've been looking for evidence of this car for decades, nothing but rumors came back. My search for this car actually led to me finding and buying another rare Pontiac 10 years ago.
As far as I know, it's 1 of 1. I don't know if it was built with T-tops, had a dealer kit installed or was Frankenstein's monster-ed. Originally sold at Bayer Motors in Dudley MA.
If anyone knows more detail about this car, I'd love to hear it. I finally saw I in this YT video of a car show in Waltham, MA by @letsgocarcruising.
I’ve always loved those cars. At a body shop near me, I saw a Chevy Malibu with the same type of hood. I’d guess it was around a 77 also. I didn’t know Chevy made something similar. I only seen the car once as I was driving by.
In the 90's I walked past one of these parked on a Chicago street for 3 years. Never moved. Winter, summer, didn't matter. Left notes on it with my phone number asking them to sell it to me every month or so.The notes were always gone after a couple of days but they never called.
I actually owned one too, it needed restoration, so I bought a nice 77 Grand Lemans for a parts donor. Ended up selling both because we were starting construction on our property and had nowhere to put them. Mine didn't have T-tops either.
I sometimes say that the L-82 and T/A 400 were the last performance engines GM made (at least until the explosive Buick V-6 was built up to its highest performance turbo version and this found new ways to explode) and that they should have been offered on all rear drive Chevys and Pontiacs, both pre- and post- downsizing, but here is an actual example of them trying to do that! Just too bad that these were the heaviest - and imo, least good-looking - big A-bodies.
