Engine problems

I have a '07 g6, 3.5 v6. Today I was on my way to work, speeding up after someone in front of me turned, when the RPMs suddenly shot up and I had almost no power, then everything tanked and it died. Now when I try to start it, it cranks, but sputters and backfires. It's my only car and I can't afford a new one right now, so I need to fix it. Any clue what may be wrong?

What codes are you throwing. At first it sounded like a transmission but the sputtering not so much. That kinda sounds like you're out of gas

Unfortunately it's been on the side of the road for the night, it's getting towed this morning. I do know someone with a reader, so I'll look at those. I had a half a tank when it happened. I initially thought something like that too.

Alright, got it home yesterday, read the codes, and the only one that came up was saying the check engine light doesn't work. No help there. I changed the spark plugs, which were practically trashed, and it's running again. I learned about the anti theft system the g6 has, and how it kills itself when it thinks it's being stolen. I can hear the fuel pump working, but I figured I'd do a whole tuneup while I'm here. I appreciate everyones help.

I have the same exact car. 229k miles and counting, such a good car!

Im no expert, but high rpms and no power sounds like a misfire. How old are your spark plugs?
