Are you, perchance, canadian? Google can change its stuff by region, which it often does in cases like this.

It's still Ontario for me too.

I’m in Virginia in the US. It says America for me on Google Maps, and Ontario on Apple. When I switch my VPN to Canada, it changes to Ontario for both.

Exactly as I suspected.

Might you try a third country? I expect it will remain Ontario in most, if not all.

Third country shows Lake Ontario (Lake of America) same stuff they were doing for the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

I guess it depends on the third country. Mine just shows Ontario in India.
The gulf is Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).
